6. In the commentary, Glenn comments on the amount of time without dialogue in this episode. Do you feel it enhances or detracts from the story?
It enhances.....particularly with the wonderful music choices.
7. Any thoughts of why Maddie took out her anger on her father physically? Do you feel it was true to her character?
Maddie's modus operandi is physical.......she touches, she pushes, she hugs, she hits......it is very much in her character, and although it is quite shocking, her hitting her father is true. I think it hurt her terribly to do it...but the action is certainly very Maddie.

8. In my opinion, Cybill is absolutely amazing in this episode. What's your favorite scene and why?
Although Cybill is amazing in the hotel room scene, my very favorite is the one between Maddie and David in the doorway. The way Maddie pushes David for the facts, David's sincere pain on her behalf, and the way Maddie holds it together without crumbling.....it just breaks my heart.
And the fact that it is shot so brilliantly in the shadows makes it a wow!

9. This is a question specifically for Gray, but I think we might all like to jump in on it:
Listening to Cybill on the commentary, and exploring my own feelings about this episode, leads me to believe this is more of a woman's episode. Gray, can you give us the guy's perspective on this one? And does anyone agree or disagree with my view?
I've always been partial to this episode, as well as all the other "father" episodes. I think they have become more special to me since I lost my own father, but I really do believe that the women on the writing staff had to be heavily consulted on these......because I think they hit very well on the concerns on a single career woman in the 80's and her quests to make good in the eyes of the world.......and whose eyes seemed more important than dear old Dad's??

Thanks for the missing scenes diane!!
LOVE the first one you posted! Get the feeling David knows exactly how Maddie feels about trying to impress parents and brings to mind David's anxiety in seeing his own father in "The Son Also...".

2. Why is Maddie so nervous? Does this say something about her relationship with her parents, or just generalize the relationships between parents and children?Oh, I think that most kids, especially of our generation, wanted to impress our parents. I remember hearing from both my mom and dad, time and time again, that all they wanted was for their kids to have it better than they did. I suppose that most of us with parents who lived through the depression heard that repeatedly. Maddie didn't want to disappoint. Of course they knew of her stellar modeling career, and I suppose of her financial issues that followed. I suspect she wanted to show even mom and dad that she was more than a "pretty face". One telling thing was where Mrs. Hayes mentioned that she heard alot about David, obviously from Maddie. Hmmm. I totally agree, I don't think Maddies anxiety shows a difficult relationship between her and her parents, but in general we all want our parents to be proud and not disppointed with us. And as Maddie herself doesn't quite seem to be convinced that she has NOT taken a step back, she may be a little nervous about what her parents would think about her career change. And yes, gray, I noticed that remark of Maddie's mom too and was surprised that this issue wasn't pursued further.

5. There is great chemistry in the scene when David offers to be Maddie's detective....and then he breaks it by cracking wise about the photos. Was he just being David or did he changing the mood intentionally?Deliberate act. Maddie was wound and he needed to let her uncoil a bit. Plus, he didn't want to use this particular issue as a way to score points on the Luv-O-Meter. Cybill's portrayal in this scene is one of many in this episode that are some of the most genuine in the entire series. The Luv-O-Meter??! LOL!!! Gray, couldn't have put it better!! I think too David wanted to lighten up a bit the situation, he could see - as we could - that Maddie was half in tears when he had offered his help, and he wanted to take off a bit of the weight. How very sweet of him. And I think she understood that too.

1. The bumper at the beginning of the episode is, believe it or not, in the script -- although it is billed as "Special Opening" (This is an episode for which I have a very late script.....dated 2/14 for a 2/18 airing).
Soooooo....how did you like this opening?Oh, I could watch this over and over. It's a great comedic beginning to a very intense episode. My favorite thing about it is when Maddie says, "This isn't how I've imagined it...I always thought it would be at the end of an episode", etc. I always feel like shouting, "Aha! See, Maddie? You have thought about it!" ;D And I love that they gave the viewers the answer to their "questions" in the very next episode--but in a totally unexpected way. I agree jpen, I liked it very very much!! That bit about "I know we should kiss, you know we should kiss, they know we should kiss" -- and her not disagreeing at all! ;D

A very great, very touching and very heartwarming ep. Very intense moments between D/M. I like her teary look when she thanks him for his offer to help and the way he lightens up the moment, see my earlier post. I like too how thoughtful and sensitive David is acting towards Maddie, his offer to help, his compassion when he tells Maddie what he found out, how he tries to convince her not to tell her mom - and isn't he just SO sweet after the dinner when he offers Virginia to walk her to her room to give Maddie the occasion to talk to her dad? I love also the reaction of Maddie's parents towards David - they like him both at once; maybe more clear sighted than theri girl, aren't they? And in the finale, first he gives Maddie the room and time she needs to be alone, and then he can't stand it any more and bursts in to check for sure that she's ok (BTW, I see a little parallel to "Brother..." when at the end Maddie comes to David to see if he's ok). And, after talking about all the emotions and especially tears, let's not forget it has some funny moments (and quotes) too, here are some: Agnes: "Mr. Addison, I had no idea!" D: "We've know that for a while, Miss DiPesto." Agnes: "Shall I buzz her?" D: "Anybody's gonna buzz Miss Hayes, it's gonna be me!" M: "My god!" D (taking his sunglasses off): "Look again, my dear, perhaps you are a trifle confused!" D: "Do I detect a small case of nerves here?" M: "No!" D: "How 'bout a sixpack?" M: "Can we not do this when my parents are here? This thing we do, you and I, this conversational harakiri?" M: "I've got a problem." D: "Don't look at me, I wasn't even in town that month!" D: "Follow your dad? - That's oedipal!" M: "Can't be, I'm a girl." D: "Well, then oedipi." D: "Don't worry. I'm not gonna embarass you." M: "You leaving town?" D: "I'm leaving your office." M: "That's a start." Alex: "Looks like someone didn't buy your sermon, padre!" Alex: "Do your have a liquor cabinet in your office?" D: "I don't know... do I?" Virginia: "You do, but there's only one Scotch in it." M: "...you just couldn't let it be nice, could you?" D: "What can I say?" M: "In english not much." D: "You're still welcome." M: "You're still thanked." (but he knows AND she knows how nice he's really been there!)

Not sure why but this episode came to mind today. Could partly be that it was a contender for my Tops List. What I specifically thought about was the scene between Maddie and her mom at the hotel. Eva Marie Saint WAS Virginia Hayes. She and Cybill were completely believable as mother and daughter. I love when she says to Maddie, "Something in your face just now reminded me of when you were a little girl" and launches into the monologue about things in life that are meant to be. Then she comments about how Maddie was a door slammer as a little girl, to which Maddie replies, "Still am." That is what is most endearing about her: that innocence, that vulnerability. She's very girlish in many ways and still has some growing up to do!

Soooooo....how did you like this opening? ? I really enjoyed the start to this ep, although I am surprised that it was planned. Spontaneous planning - isn't that an oxymoron? I think there's a story behind the headband 'McMahn' - I think I read it in Bruce's autobiography, something about a friend who was hanging round the set or something? He had a McMahn week - a bit like Curtis Week (obviously a Bruce thing). The fan letters was an inspired idea - I felt that it acknowledged what we were all thinking...another carrot (as next ep is Witness and they kiss). It is such a tease! 'I don't wanna be rushed!'

I) I thought David really showed Maddie the real considerate him in this one- he was really sweet, behaving himself at dinner, no lewd remarks in front of the parents, getting it just right. You just wanted to give him a big hugola!

Right with you there Diane- love that moment. It is almost painful watching him and there's even a moment when you think he's not going to tell her the truth and then he does because he cares too much for her. Love it.
