6. What in your opinion makes the scene where Maddie apologizes to David so effective?
The lighting. Maddie in and out of the shadows. Maddie somewhat reverting to a little girl by not letting David look at her during her soliloquy. Just lots of stuff jammed into that nice little scene. Even the end where she looks at all the casework on his desk...sweet.

7. There are tons of 80s references and images in this episode. Got a favorite?Toby's (and of course Maddie's) outfits...and Pet Shop boys on the juke box? West End Girls......

1. This is the next episode after "Witness". What do you think about the continuity from that episode to this? Could the argument in the office be spurred by a little residual feelings or backlash from the previous episode?
I really do think that the writers worked with continuity in mind when they wrote this episode, and definitely moved M&D two steps back...(as in one step forwards, two steps back).....as a result of them getting too close in Witness.

2. Maddie says" It did occur to me that you've never solved a case." How does that really make David feel?
I definitely agree that David felt punched in the .......gut by Maddie's statement, and justifiably so. But I also think somewhere, when the dust settled, he would also have experienced a little old fashioned guilt.....knowing that , although it seemed mean, there was a sliver of truth in Maddie's statement.
I loved that Maddie spoke her mind....but lots of times she failed dismally at Tact 101

3. Toby enters the office after Maddie has left. How would Maddie have handled the case had Toby given her the information?
I'm sure that Ms. By the Book would have had the cops there pronto. Would have loved to see a scene between Maddie and Toby.......lots of ideas there.

4. There are significant conversations where Agnes is the sounding board for both David and Maddie. Is this the episode that definitively establishes Agnes as the series confidant?
Maybe I am reading too much into this......I know it is tentative, but I kind of think she has to be shown to be a listener first.......so that we can understand her almost psychic understanding of M&D....and then she gets to be proactive as we roll farther along.

5. How is David different than the David of previous episodes? Clearly he is doing this to prove himself to Maddie. Would his reaction have been the same before this? Hmm, by this question you are putting a lot of emphasis on Witness, where I, as mentioned, don't see it as a major factor here. But then again, I am a dolt. Regardless, David has been trying to prove to Maddie that he is a true Dick...Private type, ever since they met. The anniversary scene is evidence that he thinks that he has checked that block, a belief that is shattered by the following salary dispute. Once again, Dave just doesn't understand that Maddie still looks at their (obviously complicated) relationship primarily as one of employer/employee, where Dave thinks it is more of a partnership...hopefully in more ways than one. Actually Gray, Witness was not in my mind at all when I conjured up this question. Maybe I should have said season 1 David, or an earlier model. Before he cared so much, I could see David getting pissed and walking away from Maddie's allegation. Back then, he was just fighting for survival......looking to keep the agency open...perhaps even thinking he was pulling the wool over her eyes by doing it. But by this point he has something to prove, and would be determined to do that. I kind of see this episode as an analogy -- like those on the old SAT tests....... "Sleep Talkin' Guy" is to David as "Atlas Belched" is to Maddie.....a realization of what each one of them means to the other, and a knowledge deep down, that there is no walking away from this "partnership". And let us not forget...as per my signature.......this might be the first time that we hear David vocalize his concern for Maddie's happiness...my favorite recurrent theme.

6. What in your opinion makes the scene where Maddie apologizes to David so effective?
I agree with all...amazing photography, use of light and shadows. Something that could be easily missed, however, is Bruce's acting in this scene.....he does David's discomfort perfectly.

7. There are tons of 80s references and images in this episode. Got a favorite?
I laughed out loud at a couple of them.....David being asked to look for D.B. Cooper, the Culligan Man.......Toby smoking a "Virginia Slims"
I do have to admit to being influenced in a champagne purchase by this episode......needed a special gift......purchased Champagne Perrier-Jouet in the pretty floral bottle that is shown in these scenes....for the unheard of sum of about $30 in 1986!!

87. And my usual....in another episode of favorite lines.....what is your favorite?
Maddie: I'd like some answers David: Delaware, all of the above, 90 degrees.
Maddie: Well, let me remind you, Mr. Addison, that one case does not a detective make. David: And let me remind YOU Ms. Hayes, I hate it when you talk backwards.
David: All work and no play makes a girl a lousy.........partner.
And of course..."Happy anniversary Maddie Hayes.......eat dirt and die"

3. Toby enters the office after Maddie has left. How would Maddie have handled the case had Toby given her the information? I agrees with the Bees there, but I'm unsure if Toby would have had the same forthcoming nature with Maddie. I mean, she pretty much knew it was her on the elevator, yet she didn't say anything to her, and continued to find David. That was odd to me as she was specifically looking for Maddie Hayes' agency, yet did not engage her. Hmm. This is an interesting point. It says in the script that she recognizes Maddie as she gets into the elevator..turns to speak to her, but misses the opportunity when the doors close.

Holy hell....it looks like Siberia outside again!
Excuse the weather report.......let's get to the script.
This comes after Toby tells David he is going to be the next murder.
ANOTHER ANGLE
....as David's knees give out from under him and he seats himself hard on the bed...
DAVID: Oh no.
...and Toby sits down beside him.....
TOBY: They've taken out a contract
DAVID (turning to her; damned near hysterical: On me? Why?
TOBY: Why? Your name has been all over the paper. You're the guy who's always one step ahead of them....the guy who keeps ruining their plans.
DAVID: Yeah, but it's nothing personal.
TOBY: David......
DAVID: You're sure he said Addison? DAVID Addison? Maybe you didn't hear him right. Was he speaking clearly? Was he on his back or on his stomach? I don't want to die!
TOBY: Oh, David......
FOLLOWING DAVID
....as he JUMPS up from the bed.....
DAVID: "Oh, David" is right. "Oh, David" is putting it mildly.
(and then turning to her)
DAVID: Did he say "where"? Did he say "when"?
ON TOBY
...and she shakes her head....
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as David looks at her in disbelief....
DAVID; What do you mean? ( and he shakes HIS head)...H e always tells you where and when.
TOBY: This time he didn't.
DAVID: Great.....great....inconsistency, I hate that. (suddenly getting an idea) When are you going to sleep with him again?
TOBY (nonplussed): What? Why?
DAVID: The information is probably stuck in there...just waiting to leak out.... (leaping over the bed; grabbing the phone) Give him a call. Invite him over. Tell him you're running a special.
ON TOBY
...just looking to him....the absurdity of it all written on her face.....
ON DAVID
...as it sinks in....and he puts down the phone...and sits once again on the bed.....
DAVID (to himself): Damn...
