Here is my ticket:
Maddie marches into City of Angels Investigations and she tells David he is fired. The madness of Moonlighting ensues thereafter, but just what is it exactly does David fight so hard to prove?

The madness of Moonlighting ensues thereafter, but just what is it exactly does David fight so hard to prove? Ah, David the scrapper. We don't know as of yet, but we ALL know now, that Dave's life hasn't been a bowl of grape nuts. He had a fun childhood, with lots of great friends, but one failed marriage and at least one other disastrous relationship. He doesn't have a lot to his name, and this is the only good gig he has going. David will fight tooth and nail to retain what he has...and if he has to make changes to his MO to do that...he will! Yeah, he wants to keep his job and income...but he NEEDS to keep his self worth. MY ticket: Point out one of the things that is (that are??) DIFFERENT between the pilot and the series.

Not sure I have a ticket, but I got my hand stamped when I came in the door.
My question is an icebreaker (if it doesn't qualify, I'll come up with another).
Where were you on March 3, 1985? Not only physically but what was going on in your life?
What was your reaction to the pilot......and did you ever imagine that you would still be talking about this show 25 years later?

Here's a couple more Q's: 1. How do you think David and Maddie are characterized in this episode?
2. Do you think we're supposed to identify/root for one more than the other here?
3. In what ways is Moonlighting blazing, right out of the gate, with this episode? In what ways does it have room to improve?

Here's my ticket:
In "Take My Wife" (Season 5), Maddie and David tell each other that each had the other one figured out from the get-go. Rewatching the Pilot, do think that is true? Why or why not?
Knowing what we know (the events of the next 4 years), how do you feel when you watch this very first episode?

Hi Gray! Glad you're back! And very nice avatar, btw!
What is different? The decor and layout of the office, Maddie's foyer and the fact we see her kitchen for the first and last time. They hadn't captured "the look" yet, but it soon followed.
What was I doing back in 1985? Oh the days!! I was living in San Antonio, TX.. My oldest was about 18 months old and I was teaching school part time until she got a little older. After a failed pregnancy she was my world, along with the hubby of course, and I'm thankful I was able to stay home with her most days.
I remember catching the Pilot and was definitely intrigued, but I'm one of those that didn't really get into the show until they started showing the repeats of the first 6 episodes. From then on WHAMMY!! I was hooked.
....Even started shopping for the Maddie colored jackets with shoulder pads, pumps....got my hair styled like hers...had it BAD!
I was 25 years old and didn't really look seriously at what I would be doing 25 years later! HA! Can't believe we are here....right now....still talking about the show just like I did with friends and neighbors back then.
Well.....maybe not exactly like back then....they were not "essed" friends!! ;D

Let's see, I was working for the Army at a unit in North Philadelphia, at this point a First Lieutenant. I was living in a one bedroom apartment in southern Montgomery County. My rent was $350 a month, my electric bill was $35, my car payment for my 1984 Chevrolet Celebrity was $226.40 and dig this, my CABLE bill was TEN DOLLARS a MONTH! I was young, single, stupid and scraping by, but loving every single moment of it! As for the pilot, it was NOT the first episode I saw, that was the Next Stop Murder, but once I heard the line "Yes, I AM looking up your dress"...I knew this was a show for me! Here is me, circa 1985: (ah, I'm on the LEFT..no idea how to make it bigger)

In what ways is Moonlighting blazing, right out of the gate, with this episode? In what ways does it have room to improve? I think they are developed pretty well for a pilot, much better than most. Maddie starts out as a pampered VIP, but as we see later, can handle herself in tough situations...a trait we saw again later on. Dave immediately was part joker, part wise cracker, part hero..how could you NOT like the guy. I don't think we were to choose sides in this debate, you just wanted to see them interact. While I think the romantic potential was obviously there, it had a LONG time before it would sizzle. The pilot started with a bang, great music, wonderful characters, stylish clothes and locations and a plot secondary to the relationships. It did seem rather "slow" compared to later shows...not bad, mind you, but a different tempo.

The madness of Moonlighting ensues thereafter, but just what is it exactly does David fight so hard to prove? I have the feeling that David was a bit of a drifter, trying to find himself. Then, somehow, he ended up with City of Angels. I agree with gray that this was a great gig. David could play "boss" and apparently had quite an expense account, not to mention the cars. Being a private detective was a great image booster. Maddie's actions would have taken all that away. He really needed that job, not only for the financial benefits, but also for his self-respect. In order to keep the agency as a viable business, he had to win Maddie over. This included solving a case to show Maddie that he had what it takes to be a detective and therefore, make money for her. He had to prove that it would work.

Oh, maybe they had an inking, but these initially simple folks wound up being delightfully more complex as time went on, and much more human in the process. I love the pilot, it was so new and so fresh and to me, not devalued or tainted by anything that followed. Besides...Cybill was just so damn yummy!
