While watching, I made some notes on some amazing "firsts" First underwear joke......actually there were 3...4 if you count the "looking up your dress" comment. First feet shots.....somebody in this group is a foot fetishist. First time David says....."I just want to talk to you." First celebrity guest -- Mary Hart First time Maddie says "ADDISON!" First time David and Maddie dance..... First time Maddie throws something at David... First (and I think only time) David calls Maddie "Sweetheart" These may be a little silly.......the martini is kicking in....don't drink and type! Not silly! Love all these firsts you listed! Many are first of many times said or done LOL Just great stuff!

A couple more observations.....I'm on a roll.... The scene when DiPesto says goodbye to David....isn't Bruce really wonderful? The way he holds himself in that chair with his back to the camera....the picture should be in the dictionary next to depressed. I am spacing on this.......was the word "bitch" a usual one on TV in 1985? Not sure if it caused a real stir......well, I guess it did come after "Dynasty"...... OMG...the restaurant scene...that hair, that dress, that date.....this clip should be put in an 80's time capsule! (Besides, the lobster bib was genius!). All location shooting....yummy! Very creepy villains........was Mohawk's acne real or a really good make-up artist? Am i the only one who never picked up the posted notice on Maddie's door? Guess she was getting evicted. Can't believe after 25 years, you still can see something new. Do you really think Maddie had hot dogs in her fridge? Or did the bad guys bring them along to prove their point? Was the bar scene absolutely gorgeous? The photography is excellent...and M&D look like the two most beautiful people in the world. At the eastern building, do you think Cybill's stunt person is a guy or a girl? Some cool quotes: "Poor doesn't become me" About the doctor's bikini underwear......."Tell me you're in a position to know and break my heart forever" "You need me to live, lady" "Duress" "You missed the barn." "ball of fluff/ Sissy fighter" "the plot thinnens" ...(this is my favorite, I use it often) I am glad we did this....what a swell party this is!! More great stuff said by our Diane! She really seemed to sum this episode up great great for us! SO true! Such a great start to an amazing tv show! 25 years later we are still so passionate about it and i think as i've gotten older i even became more passionate about this show! I'm so glad for this website and for all you wonderful ML friends i've made here! CHEERS to you all and ML forever!

Some things I noticed: 1. The office looked rather "busy" and well staffed didn't it? 2. NO BIMMER! (boo!) 3. Check out the date on the calendar Maddie almost throws at David in his office. Obviously a stock prop. Yup, Wednesday, July 21st...1982!!!

Another first and I think there is only one other time this happens in the whole series: David uses a computer to figure out what the numbers in the watch means.

The poster on Maddie's door - I didn't catch that at all. Looks like I'll have to rewatch again - is that redundant??
Moonlighting sountrack - count me among the owners...great having Bruce's and Cybill's musical performances captured along with Al Jarreau.

Somehow I seem to remember Glenn commenting on Cybill's stunt double for this scene. Was she a circus performer?

Here's my ticket: In "Take My Wife" (Season 5), Maddie and David tell each other that each had the other one figured out from the get-go. Rewatching the Pilot, do think that is true? Why or why not? I think there is some truth to it, but only some. Because that would leave out the pleasant surprises, each one being caught off guard by the other time and time again. Maddie and David were multi-layered characters; almost every time a layer was peeled off and exposed a bit too much, they would grab it quickly and smooth it back on. Knowing what we know (the events of the next 4 years), how do you feel when you watch this very first episode? I just feel so much warmth, remembering and marveling at how I could love something like a television show this much. I still can watch the same scenes repeatedly and get warm fuzzies all over!

Let's Party like its 1985! LOL Ok here's my ticket question: What is your fave scene of the whole Pilot episode? HMMMMM Will we all pick the same one or different scenes? Well, I think we can all agree on the bar dance, but I'll go out on a limb and choose one that addresses the issue of Maddie not having faith in David. It's a (the?) drive-and-talk scene, which actually starts out as a drive-and-not-talk. Once Dave gets her to open up, she lays into him and basically calls him stupid. He makes her aware that indeed he has a plan, and Maddie looks as though she has tears in her eyes when she apologizes, takes his hand, and says, "Keep grasping." I suppose we can add to diane's "Firsts" list: First drive-and-talk First Maddie apology

My question is an icebreaker (if it doesn't qualify, I'll come up with another). Where were you on March 3, 1985? Not only physically but what was going on in your life?
What was your reaction to the pilot......and did you ever imagine that you would still be talking about this show 25 years later?
I was 11 years old, still in 5th grade. I actually missed the pilot on Mar. 3...don't ask me why; I don't know. Speaking of which, does anyone know what was the re-air date in the summer? That was the night I was first captivated. I believe it was after the bar scene that they went to commercial, and not before or since have I prayed for anything the way I prayed for the show's return from commercial. Mom was sitting at the kitchen table behind me, paying bills or whatever. I kept laughing and saying, "Mom, you gotta watch this!" I remember her response as, "Humph" or "I'm busy." Of course, she caught on later. It was the first time I had ever watched this kind of "grown-up" show. As S2 was under way, I started 6th grade and had a male teacher who was also a huge fan. We would trade the more appropriate lines from the previous night's episode every Wednesday morning. In my 6th grade yearbook, which I still have believe it or not, Mr. Hauser wrote: "Always remember Dave and Mattie [sic]..." How prophetic.

I guess I slid in the back door didn't I?
Judging from this forum, the consensus is that David fell hook, line, and sinker for Ms. Madelyn Hayes from their first meeting (correct me if I'm wrong; that will make this a two-parter!). What about Ms. Madelyn Hayes? What, if any, is the defining moment of her falling for Dave?

I am not sure I agree that it was love at first sight for David, although he sure knew something was up. I think David falls hook, line and sinker during "The Last Murder You Hear", when he figures out that he can't stand to think of Maddie in love with someone else.
I think Maddie falls in love with David during "Atlas Belched". I'm not sure that she knows it at that point, but in my eyes, that is the time when she starts to know that she can't live without him in her life, and would risk all that she has to make that happen.
One more thing....I know it's kinda picky, and I apologize, but Maddie's proper name is a pet peeve of mine. It is Madolyn.......spelled that way in all the scripts. You can also see it spelled that way on an envelope in one of the episodes...totally slips my mind which one....maybe somebody can help there? It is an odd way to spell it, and not in my opinion, the prettiest spelling, but gotta go with the authenticity.

I think David is intrigued and challenged by Maddie here, but not yet willing to put her needs first in the way he does later on (and the bar scene in "Next Murder" is definitely a seminal moment...so is "Brother Can You Spare a Blonde," when he swallows his pride and asks Richie for $35,000). As for Maddie, in the series of episodes from "Atlas" to "Witness," I think she is realizing just how much David cares about her (as a friend and partner, at the very least). He has somehow become the central person in her life, and she's going to do what she's got to do to keep him around (including putting heartgrabbing ads in the classifieds . Thanks for the heads up on the name, BTW. I have been (mis)spelling it "Madelyn" too (none of my scripts have her full name)...I shoulda checked davidandmaddie.com! ;D I'm off to do some editing...

I don't think it was love at first sight either, but I think he had the hots for her when they were dancing in the bar and I think Maddie was very attracted to him....but scared of him, too! Love came later. As far as Madolyn....I think I have spelled it both ways, second guessing everytime! I think I've seen Mattie....Maddey....Madoline....Madeline.... ;D Thanks for setting it straight Diane!

It's funny you mention this, diane, because I remember seeing that envelope...in Tracks of My Tears, btw. But then, in "The Moonlighting Phenomenon" when Cybill is interviewed, the caption reads, "Madelyn Hayes." I guess that's one of many benefits of owning scripts. I think "Madeline" is the most lovely.
