Am i the only one who never picked up the posted notice on Maddie's door? Guess she was getting evicted. Can't believe after 25 years, you still can see something new. I have wondered what that notice was since I first saw the pilot 10 years ago, I never thought of an eviction notice

I'm thinking of starting a slow re-watch again (always busy but think it's time I rekindled the flame with my two favourite people). If anyone's interested let me know: it's always fun with more than one!

Brilliant Diane - it's been too long I could probably fit a pilot re-watch in tomorrow (Saturday) during the day, especially as it's raining here in little old England. Let me know if you can too. Ps I love your Maddie quote on your avatar!

So we discussed doing an entire rewatch of the show. I might as well kick it off, as I've recently watched the pilot.
First of all; this might be the only episode with a thrilling, actual detective plot line that makes sense. Hahaha! Let's be fair now, we weren't in this for the cases, now were we? I remember being on the edge of my seat, especially when Maddie was hanging from that ladder. The chemistry and playful banter between David and Maddie was there from the get go and the words 'sissy fighter' have always stuck with me somehow. I thought it was hilarious! What did you all think of the case in this one?
I also remember beginning to teach myself English with this very episode. Sure, we're being taught English in school here in our small country called Holland, but I wanted to be better at it than your average Dutch person. Therefore, I wrote down English words that I didn't know yet and looked up their translation. I was 12 when I came across Moonlighting, so by the time I was 18, I managed to graduate English class with an A. Thank you very much, Glenn, Bruce and Cybill! Hahaha!
Anyway, I think everyone here knows by now that I developed a little crush on David Addison back in my teens, though I'm not really sure when and where it began. I can tell you, though, that the scene with him dancing with Maddie and dipping her still gives me butterflies to this very day. I know it's not supposed to be a romantic moment, as David is totally robbing Maddie while sweet talking her, but I just can't help myself. Which raises the question for me; we know he's doing it to retain his job, but is he already somewhat interested in her at this point? Or is that still a long way away?
As for Maddie; why do you think she kept the agency open at the end of this episode? We know that neither she or David is a very good detective. What motivates her?
May I also just say that I'm totally in love with the Eastern Columbia Building (the one where Maddie is hanging from the clock)? I love older buildings like that. I wrote it down somewhere on this board already, but I was at that building 12 years ago and it's exquisite!
All right, your turn. Discuss this episode with me.

I've not rewatched the pilot yet (hey, it's feature-length), but I've read this thread to prepare, which gave me two shocks. For starters, the pilot being set in early 80s US, I kind of always assumed Mohawk was meant to have Kaposi's sarcoma, not acne. It made sense to me, it's not like some dialogue and plot points in the show aren't dated. Wow, just wow. Also, Madolyn Hayes?! I had to find the envelope shot in ToMT. It's quite prominent there, I must have just thought it was an oversight by the prop department, those things happen a lot. But Madolyn?! What's next, maybe I've been spelling Sybil Shepard's name wrong the entire time?
And if I wanted to build an indefensible conjecture for fun, I'd say that Madolyn was a play on Cybill, spelling-wise, and on madeleines, in the Proustian sense, of intangibility and [you could really go on and on here], as well as their colour being like Maddie's hair.
As for the episode (and I'll get back to it when I rewatch it properly), I remember being underwhelmed by the villain. 'Duress.' It's like if I played him--I'm, uh, not a great actor. In general, it shows Caron didn't want to write a detective show. The mystery is okay, but the motions of figuring it out are quite thin, like all the decades of detective fiction growing in sophistication, complexity, and soundness hadn't happened. But then I'm probably biased, I didn't get to S1 until I'd seen 20 or 25 episodes of S2 and S3. Even with that, the relationship between Maddie and David moves so much faster than in S2. It shows that Caron didn't know how much time he had left to get the two somewhere.
Does anyone know when the pilot was filmed and how much time passed before it and the filming of the rest of S1? And when S2 was ordered?
Witness made an interesting point (page 7, 6 March 2010, 9:10 AM GMT): by the end of the bar scene, Maddie is looking for an excuse to spend more time with David. He sure is an effective sweet talker (and not much else; 22 episodes later, Maddie claims he's never solved a case. Is she right?). But is he doing only that? It's important to him to prove himself to Maddie. But is it already about proving himself to Maddie in particular, and how just about saving his way of life? Does the point of transition happen in this episode, or is it still in the future?

It's funny, I actually just now watched the Pilot with my 12-year-old daughter. Back when Moonlighting first aired in the mid-80's, I was around that age and I absolutely loved it. I wanted to see if she'd love it, too. I'd say it definitely held her interest, but I'll have to see if she wants to see more episodes another night. At one point early on she asked me if David likes Maddie, and I was like, "YES, she gets it!" So, I'd say it's pretty obvious that he was falling for her right from the start.
A couple of things that have always stood out to me. 1) The word "duress". I've always remembered the meaning of that word because of this episode. 2) I love the song Maddie and David dance to in the bar, "Since I Fell For You". Can't think of anyone but Maddie and David whenever I hear that song. 3) Maddie's housekeeper mentions that Maddie had just gotten back from her cruise. I wonder, did Maddie cruise alone? Who was she with? Was it a singles cruise?
When Maddie says she's surprised that David didn't try to take her back to his place, and he says, "Would you have gone for it?", she looks like she's thinking about it. Do you think, had he asked her, that she would've taken him up on it? Maybe Maddie was a little looser back then, had more of a social life. I mean, she did just come back from a cruise. And, she had that date already planned with the plastic surgeon.

1. Cultural references
Thanks Sandra & Satirise, these references are exactly what I had in mind. I like your speculation concerning Maddie’s name and misspellings. It does not hurt that she can be called Mad-die either.
I always thought that Mohawk is the reference to Travis Bickle. What do you think?
2. DVD commentary
As I explained somewhere else I do not own an ML DVD set and I have been watching it on UTube. Until few days ago I did not realise that GGC participated in commenting on the episodes. So far, I found out that GGC, BW, CS and Jay Daniels commented on AS (1), JD did BMOMS on his own (2), CCG and Mark Harmon did SAD (3)and GGC and BW commented on ATTTM (4).
How many episodes GGC comments on in total? Is every episode commented on by somebody?

Just to clarify, I want thinking along the lines of intravenous drug use on Mohawk's part. He seemed heavily stereotyped as such, with his hairstyle, clothes, and behaviour. But I was probably barking up the wrong tree: I stereotyped the 80s as stereotyping people.

How awesome that she was interested! I mean, a 12-year-old looking at an eighties show is bound to catch up on the differences between then and now. No cell phones, the computers looked clunky and the styling.... Don't let me get started on what was fashionable back then. I look at Maddie's shoulder pads and think to myself: "Lord, did that actually happen at one point in fashion history?!" Hahaha! I feel like everything is so much faster these days, even the speed of tv shows and movies. Too fast, sometimes. That being said, however, I do feel like Moonlighting could hold its' own against the present day. The dialogue is fast, the relationship between Maddie and David is interesting and overall, it's enjoyable television. So if your daughter doesn't mind the set back in technology, I'd say; bring on the next episode! And you're all right: Maddie and David did like each other from the start. I don't think she in particular would have owned up to it yet, though. She still has some considering and contemplating to do

This is an interesting issue, isn’t it, ‘would she go for it’?
My reading of the scene is: Maddie is really a bit surprised that the common, in her experience, situation did not eventuate – he did not try to take her to his place. She says that to test his reaction. She would not say it to a man she were not interested in as it would be an unfair tease.
This man, however, has been so charming, so at ease, he is almost irresistible. As we have seen in BCYSAB, she is not averse to try a nice man. So the answer is yes she would, if not that they already have an employer - employee relationship. There may be tinge of regret… or am I seeing things I wish for?
I have a theory about Maddie social life, which I described in Ramblings in an answer to Sandra’s concern about Maddie 'not knowing love'. Perhaps you would like to have a look there?
