The other night, I was doing my umpteenth watching of "Chances Are".
I'm sure all Cybill fans have seen this, and if not, it's a sweet little film you should seek out.
I'm never quite sure whether I am watching it to see the gloriously beautiful Cybill.....or the gloriously beautiful Robert Downey Jr.
One thing that really struck me....(outside of the fact that there are amazing similarities to the fight scene in "Brother").....is that it is truly a joy watching Cybill being able to play scenes in which her character is truly HAPPY. It is very enjoyable watching her let go. Don't get me wrong.....I love our angsty Maddie....but watching Cybill in a different role is fun.
To lead to my discussion topic.......and channeling David just a tad.....do you think Maddie is ever truly happy? And do you think there are situations where she might have been, and for a variety of reasons, wasn't?

Oh, thank you very much for this topic! Many times I asked myself exactly the same question: is Maddie ever trully happy? Of course, she is! Sometimes at least... I'd like to mention the episode "It’s a Wonderful Job", at the very end, when Maddie comes to the office and meets David, Agnes and Magillicuddy there, she starts crying and then when David takes her in his arms...- she IS happy to have him again. And one more moment from "A Womb With a View", during the party Maddie looks very, very, very happy dancing with David! Of course, there are more such moments, that just slipped from my mind) Promise to post some more) By the way, "Chances are" is a marvelous movie! One of those that makes you feel warm and happy... It is mostly because of Cybill's charming smile

Maddie's happiness.....sigh!
This topic makes me sad, mad, frustrated, confused, sympathetic....
There are times she looks for happiness and comes close but stops herself short for what ever reasons....fear mostly.
I agree the happiest I think she ever seems is in "Womb..." while she dances with David. Unfortunately, this is the saddest ep of the whole series besides "Between a Yuk...", in my opinion.
See why I am sad, frustrated, confused and abused?!
And they wrote the perfect line for David when he was fighting for their relationship in "To Heiress..." ( I think or "A Trip..."?) where Maddie is telling him the one thing he absolutely does not want to hear: She's not happy.
David replies: "You won't let yourself be happy."
And he's right....
I just wished they had done things a little differently so that we could see Maddie be happy. You're right Diane, Cybill does play a truly happy character so beautifully. She is just so beautiful in "Chances Are" and not just outwardly. She plays Corinne(?) with so much heart it's warming to watch.

I'd like to think Maddie was really truly happy at the end of I Am Curious...... Maddie. The end shots of her smiling just looks like she is totally happy to me, but that somehow changes the next morning. Like David says You wont let yourself be happy, it's like she starts to let go and be happy and something pulls her back. I also believe in the first half with David on the couch and the dancing scene at the shower in A Womb With a View she looks her happiest too but that changes not due to her but other curcumstances. We should have got to see Maddie more happy, cause as season 5 goes on we never really see that sparkle of happiness in either of them again.
I do agree Chances Are is an adorable movie and Cybill is a doll in it !

I'm never quite sure whether I am watching it to see the gloriously beautiful Cybill.....or the gloriously beautiful Robert Downey Jr. Tough call, diane, particularly since Robert Downey Jr. is on my Top 3 list and I find him adorable. To lead to my discussion topic.......and channeling David just a tad.....do you think Maddie is ever truly happy? And do you think there are situations where she might have been, and for a variety of reasons, wasn't? While I agree with the situations mentioned previously, for me, the shining moments of happiness are sprinkled all through Season 2. Dancing with Richie/Talking on the phone with a secret someone/getting the money from "David"; having a nice dinner and a moonlight walk with David; gambling with David in Buenos Aires...I'm sensing a pattern here, and I'm only on episode 3! Maddie's happiness seems to arise out of feeling successful--no surprise there--and from feeling that she can rely on someone. However, a client's lunacy and/or David's resorting to irksome behavior tarnish those moments for her. I think she would have been happy in the relationship with David if a)she knew how to be in one to begin with (obviously lacked experience in this area); b)she was able to let go of her antiquated notions and image of "Mr. Perfect." Maddie would not let herself fall too deeply in love with him for fear he would disappoint her, like he had so many times. This fear clouded her memory of all the times he supported her and put her happiness ahead of his own. Oh, David...

I loved how happy she was in The Son Also Rises as she was getting back to work and seeing David. She was giddy like a young girl. She was also super excited to be going on a date with him in Symphony. She was just radiant when they allowed her character to be that way.

I see many flashes of happiness during season 3 when she is with David...looking at him..fighting with him...being with him..that is why it is such a disappointment to me when she seems disgusted with David after they made love...And I adored Chances Are....

I too am a huge fan of Chances Are.
When was Maddie happy though? I agree with the very end of I am Curious and the start of A Womb. I need to rewatch to pick out more bits though.
Unfortunately I can think of so many more times when Maddie was sad or mad

I can't believe I never commented on this!!! Howevee, I totally agree with Bees (and David): And they wrote the perfect line for David when he was fighting for their relationship in "To Heiress..." ( I think or "A Trip..."?) where Maddie is telling him the one thing he absolutely does not want to hear: She's not happy. David replies: "You won't let yourself be happy." And he's right.... Whatever the reason for Maddie's tendency to not allow herself happiness, we never really find out... saddening & very confusing, I agree again with you, Bees. And I think, along with the most of you, that Maddie's happiest moments were the very ending of "I am curious... Maddie" and the dancing scene in "Womb". Far, far too little -- there were many more occasions... sad.

I like to believe there lots of offscreen happy moments.
Of course now I am away in fairyland where I believe that David and Maddie are real, alive people. Ah if only

We get glimpses of her happiness..few and far between though. She seems really happy when they get their first client..and when David comes back in Witness and when she sees him after their vacations in Son Also Rises.. I probably can think of more...I'll come back lol

That's true, Sue, there are moments. I can think of the Symphony episode when David comes to her looking all hot with a red rose - she is so happy! And in MTTC she seems to enjoy the whole chasing scene! And there's also TMWF when David gives her a lovely gift - she is shining!

Oh I think another moment is when she sees David has come back from "underground" in "Witness", after she had solved the case and cleared his name. Also, when he made the sacrifice of closing his own business so she could get hers back from Lou LaSalle in "Atlas". And I think at the end of "Flesh", when she kissed David on the bridge and they had decided to forget the past and make a new start, she was happy too. This was such a promising scene...
