Back to your question: --do you think we are still supposed to cherish any hope that David and Maddie will eventually be together?
I never gave up this hope and I never will! For me they stayed together. I never thought about them any other way. Such love can't go away. Maybe they never got married, but they stayed together. I think) Good point Goldilocks. I suppose I agree with you.

Sorry I didn't make it on Tuesday folks, but I wuz, er busy. Before I get to the questions, I'd like to parrot something I put down on the original rate this episode thread in that, in this episode, I felt uncomfortable with all of the major players. I was ticked that David was still playing house with is partners MARRIED cousin. I was dismayed how Maddie out and out LIED to keep the charade a secret from Annie's husband. I was sickened by Annie's inability to REALLY see the hurt she was doing to Maddie by inserting herself between her and David. Man, in this episode I really didn't care for ANY of them. For a show that was based on the viewer's liking the characters, it was a death knell. This episode so perplexed me I didn't have the energy to make an avatar. One of the reasons I can't watch these final episodes is that I get so angry with David. The whole thing with Annie is just unconscionable, IMO. He is really thrown under the bus in these last shows, and when he's not pissing me off, he's bringing me down. The end of this episode is just so freaking sad. Totally leaves me heartbroken for Maddie.

Funny Gray. This episode wasn't worthy of an avatar - so true. Here's a question I would love to know everyone's feelings on. In the last scene there was a lot of emoting. What do you think both were feeling/thinking? I think David's look said 'well, this is the way you wanted it. I hope you are happy because I am sure not". I think Maddie's look said 'how did this happen to us after all we have been through?'. We saw similar emoting in the Sam arc but they were actually given an ending with that story.

..do you think we are still supposed to cherish any hope that David and Maddie will eventually be together? Well, I may be in the minority, but I'm going to offer my opinion. My answer is yes. Despite the fact that most of us hate the way David is behaving, we all know he still loves Maddie. He wouldn't have come to her rescue, interfered with Maddie's lunch with Annie, come to her house under the premise of files on the Anselmo case, OR sized Donegan up when he showed up at Blue Moon. I guess what I'm saying is the writers of the 5th season may not have given us what we wanted, but Moonlighting was always written around David and Maddie's attraction to and eventual love for each other. There were some good moments in the last season with some very good ideas for those two to heal all wounds and warts. The elevator scene in "Between A Yuk...", the ending of "Perfetc", the emoting at the end of "Eine Kleine...", to name a few. And I'll even throw in the last of " Lunar Eclipse". ( I know, now you hate me...) Some of those moments could have been fleshed out a little more to make more sense of WHERE their relationship was going. I want to believe they ran out of time in the end and the relationship was left up to us to figure out.....but we can save that topic for the next time. They certainly had no idea we would still be discussing their relationship like the show ended yesterday....this makes me laugh! ;D

I agree Bees. I never thought the end intimated that they were intended to part and go separate ways. Reading through comments on YouTube some people assume they didn't end up together. If anything I think the end made it look like they were given another chance without us, the viewers to see. I don't so much hate the end of the last 2 episodes as much as I hate all the stupid wasted time (and uncomfortable over-acting and bad dialogue in LE). So much time could have been given to resolving things.

2. In light of the small recurring theme of desperation, how do you see Maddie? What about David? I do not see Maddie as desperate at this point. She seems to have accepted David and Annie's relationship and seems genuinely concerned that Annie is going to get hurt. David, on the other hand, seems to be the desperate one. Maddie has backed off, apologized, and is spending a lot of time with the detective. She appears to no longer care what David does. I think her indifference is making him a little crazy. I think her indifference makes me crazy. Very well put, lin212. Forget the season 5 writers and the various reasons they had for some choices they made. The way they treat each other in this particular Annie ep just twists me up. I really can barely stomach it...so I throw things.... And the irony of it all is it's Annie pointing out to David that something is still amiss between them, that he needs to apologize to Maddie, that she doesn't like being in the middle of whatever it is they have between them. And David knows she's right. But, when David goes to Maddie under the premise of the Anselmo case, Maddie doesn't even let him in her house. Ouch! And then she calls him desperate.....ouchie! I agree with you guys. Maddie is so not the desperate one here, she states she isn't happy with D/A together because she feels David is only using her cousin & feels it will hurt her cousin in the end.David on the other hand keeps throwing it in Maddie's face every chance he can to try to show Maddie he has moved on & is happy with An**e but he is going way over board trying to convince her i think so it sure looks deseprate to me, since he is showing up at thier lunch or her home and can i say i hate hate the scene at her home when he comes about the file for the Anselmo case & she won't even let her partner in her own home. It kills me to see what has become of these 2 people You are right also that Annie can tell that M/D arent' really over so she tries to get David to see that they have unresolved issues but David is so not listening reallyto her and well Annie doenst back off so she really didn't care too much that maybe she was coming in between them or she would have backed off . UGH i hate all this stuff!!!!!!!!!

I've been whirling this around....
The episode ends with Maddie checking into a hotel by herself. Are we to believe that she is lonely, avoiding Donegan and his date offer or standing her ground with David and his antics with Annie?
I may not be asking this the right way....but what's going on with Maddie?

bees, in the last scene I got the feeling that Maddie really just wanted to be alone after all the drama of the evening. She didn't feel like company, didn't want conversation, etc. When the guy checking her in at the hotel asks how many, she unhesitatingly says "one". It's only after the word is out of her mouth that she hears that "one". Her face says it all.

I may not be asking this the right way....but what's going on with Maddie? Well we know she had to checking into a hotel because of her house being destroyed, but with everything that happened and i think David came to her rescue and she remembers this. She doesnt want to have any romance with Donegan, i think she liked him and liked his compliments and company but we know she only could be with one man! She went to be alone yes but also she probably was wishing she didnt have to check into a hotel alone and maybe if things were differant she could have gone to David s Place SIGH! LOL Ok did i make sense in answering this question? LOL

We all believe or want to beleive that M/D had a happy ending ,even if we didnt get it on screen we all still want that for them !

OK, I'll take a stab at the bonus question first...this might be a stretch, but here goes: The title of Steven Sondheim's play "A Little Night Music" is a literal translation of Mozart's sonata title. "Night Music" tells the story of Fredrik and Desiree, former lovers who are now less-than-satisfied with their current partners. Fredrik has married a much younger trophy wife (child bride, really), and Desiree is having an affair with a married Count. Desiree sings "Send in the Clowns," a song redolent of loss, regret, and missed opportunities--pretty appropriate for this episode: I think you nailed it Jpen (If the writers were clever enough to have come up with that comparison in season 5!!) Here is my take on this episode which I watched again last night following all of your brilliant comments and questions on it. First of all - what is Maddie doing at such a patronizing cookery school? She is acting more like 'Cybill' than Maddie (nothing wrong with that as 'Cybill' was an amusing show but it is just not Maddie (sigh!)) And what is the point in getting Maddie stuck in an elevator if David doesn't rescue her with a hug. Instead she gets lumbered with a boring detective. She just seems tired. "David and I are nothing but business partners" Hah! Crap! That's really what we need to hear. He then tries to send her to Chicago?? What?? He has just spend a whole series willing her to come back from Chicago. "If you need to guard a body she's got a pretty good one" "You'll learn to ignore him" Mild laugh or small smile. (one of the only ones in this ep) Cut to the scene where David buys A**** a couch - let me get my throw-up bucket!. i have two questions. 1.WHERE IS MADDIE? and 2. WHY IS SHE NOT STAYING WITH HIM? Perfect set up for him to 'woo' her again.- Oh that's right - she's busy having a boring dinner with the boring detective. Then the overlapping dialogue scene with Burt and Dave. Again where is Maddie? The lunch scene with A**** and Maddie officially goes down as one of my worst Moonlighting scenes ever (and I never thought I would say that about my fav show) The pretense, animosity, bad script and dare I say acting. "I guess it's easier to get your digs in behind my back" - horrible. "He was a bad habit" WHAT? (again) Please come back Maddie and David. My heart is breaking and I can hardly make it to the end of the episode. Finally David pulls up outside her house. SURELY we are now in for some good fast-talking dialogue and they are going to make up - errr nope. "Desperate women do desperate things". I am not sure what this means - does this mean she regrets David and wants him back? I'm confused at this point as Dave drives away. David rings Burt "yeah Burt it's Dave" ...... "ADDISON" (second mild smile of the episode) The reveal scene is really not worthy of any comment. Maddie looks pale, tired, worn out, sad. Where are the soft filters? The blue or red lighting? Where is the dialogue and the surprise? The final scene between them...that kiss on the cheek...that long look. If only....... I would end with saying bring back GGC but then I remember Walter. Sorry if I have depressed you - I have certainly depressed myself. Back to good ole season 2 tonight. x snap

As soon as A**** gets into town, I really have a hard time watching season 5. So, after Perfetc, it's kind of ruined for me...except for some stray D&M scenes here and there. I wish they had also been closer like in Yuk, but they seemed to change all that with "pals". Oh well.
