As I mentioned in another post, it feels like the combination of a rude David in the otherwise emotionally stunning "Next Murder You Hear" and a reasonably cold Maddie in its follow-up, "Next Stop Murder", formed the solid cementing of the characters they would be throughout season 2. In fact, Maddie rubbing her "plans" in David's face in "Next Stop" leads naturally into her asking him how he feels about her spending time with his brother in season 2's opener.
As a result, "The Murder's in the Mail" feels like it belongs after "Read the Mind..." and before "The Next Murder You Hear" in the order of character development. This is a wonderful case-centered episode with Maddie still letting David take the reins in terms of investigation (as she had up through "Read the Mind..."), though it seems by now that this is more for her own wonderful-to-see amusement than it is to actually learn anything. There is a warmth between these two as they continue to figure out how to relate to each other, with less of her looking down upon aspects of him than we would see from "Next Stop" on.
I don't know. Maybe I'm over-thinking it, looking for a straight path in a narrative that was all about zigzagging, taking a "Maddie" approach to a "David" relationship.
Speaking of twists and turns, I love the plot and mystery of this episode, not to mention the beloved asking of the question yet again, "Who's the client?". I love season 1. In some ways, season 1 is its own animal, wherein it felt like David and Maddie were on the fast track to becoming a couple much more quickly, softly, and warmly than they would following the curve ball thrown by "The Next Murder You Hear" and "Next Stop Murder".
But the curves balls were only just beginning, weren't they? If all goes to plan, I'll begin revisiting the wonderful season 2 late next Friday night, and we'll see how off I am in feeling the way I currently do about season 1.
