Bert answering the Blue Moon phone in Agnes' absence (The Color Of Maddie, I think): "Hello?" All the staff look at Bert, then...
"Blue Moon Agency of private detection, We yearn to guide you in a virtuous direction, From the dawn of fair youth til hoary convalescence, To fight the good fight is our goal and our essence"
And his triumphant look at the end of it is typical Bert - trying so hard but not quite getting it right!

That's a really good one! Is that the same one where Agnes has gone to the bathroom and comes back and gives him a row for answering the phone?
It's not really a Bert-ism, but a scene I really like is in Blonde on Blonde when David and Bert follow Maddie to that club and Bert's droning on about the people who come here looking for a meaningless one night stand, then the waitress comes over and asks if he wants his usual. hahaha

Not just a quote but one of my favorite episodes overall, is the one where Bert's family shows up and drives the lad absolutely to distraction. (Being part Italian myself, I get the jokes .) Even with all that happens to him, you can tell he still won't give up on them, and he's a basically decent guy. I know a lot of people don't like things from the last year or two, and with some justification, but there are some exceptions and that one still brings a smile to my face.

Yes, you're right. I was thinking that it was one of those Agnes and Burt episodes where David and Maddie aren't in it at all, which is why I didn't think it was that one. I forgot about the jury story. That whole David-Maddie-Burt triangle thing was just too weird!
Thanks Kara.

Obviously not as great as the M&D bicker and banter, but the arguments between Bert and MacGilicuddy are often amusing: B: "Looking a little green around the irises aren't we MacGilicuddy?" MacG: "You'd have to get a stepladder to see my irises!" .... Agnes: ..."What is it with you two? I can't even remember what it is why you hate each other!" B: "Oh it's very simple" MacG: "Yeah" B: "We just do!" MacG: "Yeah!" B: "Right?" MacG: "Blind hatred!" Agnes: "See? You agree on something!" B: "Agree? NEVER! I Love this man!" MacG: "Me neither!" Which makes me ask, why DID they hate each other? Fighting for Agnes' affections? I don't know when MacGilicuddy even came into it.

Wow Babyhayes, you've been busy! Might go and watch a few episodes myself and get a few more quotes down.
You're right; MacGilicudy and Bert do have some great banter lines. I'm not sure why they hate each other so much - anyone remember when that started? Bert got quite jealous with him and Agnes sometimes, but I'm not sure if that was the cause. I'm not really sure there was a cause. What was the first episode where we see MacGilicudy? The first time I remember him with any lines is in It's a Wonderful Job. Can anyone shed any light here?

I watched Between Yuk and a Hard Place again - I had forgotten about that really funny scene between Burt and Maddie in her office:
'You are much more than the pleasing facade I mistook you for in the beginning....what I wouldn't give to be the man who sired you'
And then he falls on the floor at her feet. The idea of Bert flirting bith Maddie is so ridiculous it's just side splitting. And then later in the outer office he's talking to Agnes and calling Maddie 'Madolyn'. Here's another good one from that scene:
Agnes: 'While you were in there getting pumped over her pumps, Mr Addison's getting ready to fly to Virginia'
Bert: 'I know that - he promised to send me a ham'

"Agnes is the kind of girl you take home to meet your mother..."
I seem to remember Bert says words to this effect during that scene in "Blonde on Blonde" where they're looking around trying to catch up with Maddie. Bert starts to talk about the difference between somebody you'd want to be more meaningful, and just another conquest.
It's a strange conversation, but once again uses the sidekick character as someone who vicariously talks about or 'lives through' everything that's really going on with the main characters.

Love Gem The first episode in which MacGillicudy appears is "The Man Who Cried Wife," ep. 2 of year 3. As I don't have a tape handy, I can't tell you what his first speech is or why exactly he and Bert start to hate each other, but that's the first one where he shows up. ;D

I'm sure that's the first episode MacGillicuddy gets any lines too Queensgirl. Isn't it related to him having been so 'spontaneous' as to have gotten married on the weekend to some girl he only met the day before? Maddie proposes giving him the number of a good lawyer for a wedding present. I think when his marriage (almost inevitably) falls apart he seeks support and comfort from his work colleagues - namely Agnes and that might be where the whole jealousy thing between him and Bert comes from. One question - do we ever learn MacGillicuddy's first name?
Oh, and a favourite quote of Bert's is when he comes into David's office in (I think) Take a Left at the Altar and says, "Mr Addison, I've got beepers." David is really down at this point and he looks up and says "The circus clown?" I suppose it's the delivery but it always makes me laugh

From 'Yours Very Deadly', as Ms. Hayes catches him at her office desk, seeking shelter from Agnes:
Maddie: "What were you doing under there?"
Bert: "Fiscal '85."

In Eek a spouse. Bert is trying to cheer up David..
Why did she marry him? He´s not you!... I don't know, it's like saying (something I can't remember) or that we don't really exist.. Do we really exist?
