I don’t know if the older posters still skulk around the site, but some of them seemed to have some inside info on the show and access to people who worked on it. Maybe they can help answer this: how did ML get clearance so quickly for some songs? I’m thinking in particular about the opening sequence for Blonde on Blonde, which uses Janet Jackson’s “Nasty” as the hook.
If you don’t remember (dear God, I do!): the song starts as we see contrasting shots of Maddie, wide awake and alone in bed, with that smoldering look that separates her from almost all others in her species, while another blonde, Donna Dixon, is decidedly NOT alone in bed as she carries on with her lover. We see Maddie contemplating quite a while before getting up, showering, getting dressed, then ditching her work clothes for a black strapless dress, and dancing in the mirror. Wow.
Sorry; I’m back on track now.
“Nasty” was a huge hit for Janet Jackson. It was released in April of 1986. According to Wikipedia-which is never wrong ;-) - “Blonde on Blonde” premiered on Feb. 3, 1987, just 10 months later. I know ML was a big hit at the time, but doesn’t it cost a metric ton to get a hit song cleared to be used elsewhere? Given how much ML spent per episode, I can’t believe GGC could have just strode into the VP of Production (or whoever) at ABC and asked for several hundred thousand more to be able to use the song. Just curious if anyone knows.
Off to watch Maddie/Cybill dance again. Jeebus.
