I can't believe I never commented on this one. I can't remember what I rated this episode before but it's 7-8 for me. The scene at Maddie's house when she asks David to hire her is so great. I love the scenes where we get to see the sweeter side of Maddie.

I agree, ryangie. We don't see enough of Maddie's soft side. Love the scene on the stairs, too - "Meet you by that couch first thing in the morning." "First thing?" Hmmmmmmm...

"But why? Why would you want to do that?" "Because I see what you DON'T...I see what you CAN'T...you've just begun to hit your stride...the best is yet to come...." I love that exchange, because it shows that David's words DO resonate with Maddie. I find it interesting that she realizes after ONE DAY that she made a mistake. Well, I suppose the writers didn't want to keep D/M apart much longer than that. Thank goodness! I posted on another thread about David's tendency to head over to Maddie's place (often breaking in )whenever he's got news to share or needs someone to talk to. He made fun of her in The Next Murder You Hear about being the only person in her life. It's the same for him. David relies on Maddie (and her house ;D). The 1st time he shows up there in this ep, he is full of enthusiasm, thinking that his news will prevent the sale of Blue Moon. Dear Dave is too late. But he still asks her if she's happy, even though he is devastated. So, this visit does not end up well, but the 2nd time is one of my favorite scenes of the entire series. I love when Maddie lets that wall down, acknowledges her mistake and lets David know that she has faith in him and his abilities by asking him to hire her. Even though they were on the stairs, it was almost like they were a married couple (oh what could have been ) each discussing their crappy days. I give it a 9.

I love that Maddie turns down LaSalle's offer, despite wanting the agency back so badly. Despite (and because of) everything, David is more important to her than Blue Moon. That is just huge, and David must know this (Do you think David knows this?). I wonder why he wants Blue Moon back so badly, though. He's got Maddie... he could get DiPesto et al. once the clients start rolling in... Is it the responsibility of being the boss? Is it the relationship dynamic? Is it nostalgia? Is it fear of a bad outcome with Wellman? It's interesting. On another note altogether, I loved the little start she gave when he stepped toward her saying "I'm the boss." I may be reaching, but there was a certain charge to that too if you know what I mean.

David wants it so badly because--despite her bravado with LaSalle-- he knows it's what Maddie truly wants and what will make her happy. And at this point, we know without a doubt that for our guy, her happiness is priority #1. He also wants Blue Moon because it was something they were building together, along with the growing friendship and a deeper love than either had ever experienced.
Oh, I love discussing this show and this episode in particular. Warm fuzzies abound!

Nice words witness! I always thought of the the agency the same way, I mean like of something that is created by both of them, something that is between them and what connects them

Yes, and I think this is why they have LaSalle reiterate that she's been moping around without her agency if front of David. He already knows she wants it back, but the fact that she couldn't even put on a brave face for LaSalle makes it all the more clear that her happiness is at stake. He realizes that despite (and because of) everything, she loves BMI, and he wants to give it back to her. Would she really have been okay working for David's agency? Part of me thinks yes, part no. It would have flipped the script in terms of their work dynamic. Or would it have?
How about that look back she does at the end (at Wellman's)? I guess one could take it as "Did I do the right thing?" but I tend to see it as her thinking "Wow, what just happened there, and what does it all mean?" I mean these two both made huge sacrifices for each other, and yet they can't discuss the why of it all. So complicated.

I sort of want to say that David still would have deferred to Maddie, because, as we know, her happiness was SO important to him. I can't really see the dynamic being flipped.

I never paid attention to this look back at the end of the episode. I think this look said: " O.k. now you go this way and I'll go that way, because it is the only right way for me to go:)) I don't know, but she seems so relieved at the end

I love love love reading everyones different interpretations of looks, dialogue, etc. Not that anyone is right or wrong but it's so great considering other's perspectives.
My take on her look back here is that David finding the Rolodex (and Phil) could have been so huge for his new business and he gave that up for her - and she was sad that LaSalle was going to get all the credit that David deserved.
She heard Lou take credit for the find but was powerless and helpless to 'right the wrong' because David had made his decision - for her.

Well, there is one more idea about this mysterious look back: maybe she just wanted to check whether Lou kept his promises, may be she turned back not to look, but to hear what Lou would say to Wellman? What do you think?

Thanks Hazel, I never considered the look back as having any real significance; then I remember, almost every seemingly minute detail has a purpose. Maddie stops, looks ahead at David, then turns around for one final look at what just transpired, essentially putting the past--another man having preyed on her vulnerability, a la Sawyer--behind her, in favor of what's been right in front of her all along: growing an already viable business with the guy who made this great sacrifice to win it back for her. I always end up gushing about this episode because nearly everything about it is perfection. The chemistry, the natural flow, the complicated emotional nuances. Cybill portrays Maddie's innocence and vulnerability so beautifully, and as usual Bruce effortlessly captures the romantic hero and protector in David.

I hadn't seen this one for a while but I have started the series again from beginning to end and today it was Atlas Belched turn.
Great chemistry from David and Maddie, and I agree with the post which says that David's comments about "the last ten months" means more than the job, but their whole relationship.
That stair scene was really great and as soon as I saw it I had to rewind it and watch it again.
5 mins of great Moonlighting is worth more than a whole show of any other series, it's so concentrated and so good. Like the Sicilian espresso coffee down here - there's only a few sips of it but you can taste it for hours afterwards. English coffee takes half an hour to drink but 5 minitues later you can't taste it....

One of the scenes that I love is when David starts clearing his desk with all the crazy things in there. It says so much about him and his philosophy and it always cracks me up and endears him to us.

Don't let life de-Dave you...! Then the tag scene when he returns everything to its proper place: "Back in the cave, Fly Man!" The rest of the scene is very sexy, with them calling each other "boss" and Maddie saying in her trademark husky-flirty voice: "Friendly takeover?" and that terrific last line, "Lady gets in trouble, it's nice to know she has somebody to call." They are so comfortable with each other, so natural throughout this entire episode. Ah! Just love it so. Now I must go watch the scene again.
