I've thought about it and can't figure out how the word "Moonlighting" refers to the series at all. According to the dictionary, "moonlighting" means:
Main Entry: moonlight Function: intransitive verb Inflected Form(s): moon·light·ed; moon·light·ing Etymology: back-formation from moonlighter : to hold a second job in addition to a regular one - moon·light·er noun
What's the second job? Fighting with each other? Secretly loving each other?

I think it's Maddie's second job (the first being a rich model who doesn't model anymore). But when you think of it, it's just a cool-sounding name. Also, she was the "Blue Moon" girl. Gotta have "moon" in there somewhere.

Maybe it's called Moonlighting because Maddie always kept the thought of closing the agency down? I'm just guessing here

I agree with Elvira. I think it's just because it was like Maddie's job on the side, not really her profession. I don't think she expected to stick at it for too long when she started out.

Hello cats and kittens, I was just having this very conversation with my two brothers and one of their friends. My brothers, of course, love the show, but being that I'm their older sister I probably brainwashed them somehow. Anyway, I digress...My brother's friend loved the show (I made them watch Dream Sequence and Bride of Tupperman). He totally gets the M & D dynamic by the way. I was so proud Anyway, after we watched the two episodes he told me it's a great show, but they could have come up with a better name for it! I was like, what? It's great, blah, blah, blah. So, it got me thinking...what does it mean? Okay, here's what I think...it's a romantic comedy, agreed? Agreed. I think the opening credits and the title help that theme. But what does moonlighting actually mean here? I think it could mean many things. Like maddie is moonlighting as a dtective. But it could mean more. Let's try to think of the themes lyrics..."Moonlighting strangers who just met on the way" So, both M and D are Moonlighting? What's david Moonlighting as? He is a detective? Or is there something deeper here? Maybe they're lovers (scratch that...would-be lovers) Moonlighting as detectives? Sorry if I'm rambling on, but I am a hopeless romantic Oh, from above (genmaximus)...secretly loving each other. I like that!

Moonlighting is a slang term for a second job that you have, often kept secret from the first boss. It may be something to make ends meet or it may be something you enjoy more than your day job. Such as, "I'm a cop but I moonlight as a cab driver." Or, "I'm a teacher but you'd never guess, I sing in clubs."
I think the name referred to the fact that Maddie was a model and had to take this other job as a detective after she was swindled and had nothing else left. In the beginning she thought the agency should be shut down, she hadn't wanted to leave her former calling, and being part of the agency was her job of last resort.

I've been trying to figure this out. Well you've heard "don't quit your day job" right? Well maybe it's referring to the fact that they are not really all that good at being detectives, at least in the beginning. They're just moonlighting as detectives. I don't know. You guys have all had some great ideas. I keep thinking I remember Glen Caron saying something in on of the commentaries about just coming up with the name off the top of his head and he didn't know why he named it that. Does anyone else remember this and remember what is was from??
