Ok peeps....here 'tis. I will admit, in the spirit of the 'greatness' that is this episode....I have decided to quote it exactly. So I cheated and watched the ep. So sue me. It's been 20 yrs. ;D I got most of it right in my head, though - as I was typing. I only put in minor direction points....but other than that, it's all dialogue. I decided to forgo the opening re-cap. "Oh hell! You can read the card!".... Have fun, kiddies!!!
“I’m Curious….Maddie”
Maddie sneaks back in the house to the tune of ‘When a Man Loves a Woman….’
Sam: “Welcome Home.”
Maddie: “You scared me.”
Sam: “Didn’t mean to.”
Maddie: (sighs) “Morning”
Sam: “Yeah. Sure is.”
Maddie: “You’re probably wondering.”
Sam: “Probably right”
Maddie: “I was on a case.”
Sam: “Case?”
Maddie: “The Johnson case. There was a new development. The phone rang in the middle of the night. You were asleep. It was just this case. I had to go.”
Sam: “Did you go on this case by yourself?”
Maddie: “By myself? No. I wouldn’t go out in the middle of the night by myself. No. There was someone else - other than me.”
Sam: “Ok…Hey, uh, would you like some breakfast?”
Maddie: “Breakfast? You made breakfast?”
Sam: “Yeah, I was just showing off. I just wanted to show you I make a mean bowl of Cornflakes. I would’ve waited, but I didn’t know when you were coming back. So - hungry?”
Maddie: “Hungry? You did this?”
Sam: “I did this.”
(Maddie sighs)
Sam: “Come on.”
Maddie: “Where?”
Sam: “To bed.”
Maddie: “Sam I don’t think….”
Sam: “No, not us. You. You need to sleep.”
Maddie: “I don’t need any sleep. We have a lot to talk about.”
Sam: "Talk later. C'mon."
~~~~~~~
(Maddies’ bedroom. phone rings)
Maddie: “Hello? -Sam wait.- Hi mom. No. No, I wasn’t actually doing anything. I worked all night, and I was about to get some sleep. No. There’s nothing to report. Nothing special going on. Just the usual routine. Uh huh. No, I’ll call you later. I love youtoo, mom. Bye. - Sam I don’t want you to think that I haven’t thought about it . About what you said last night. I don’t want you to think I took it – casually.”
Sam: “Get some sleep. We’ll talk about it when you wake up.”
~~~~~~~~
(David wakes up suddenly to see Sam standing over him)
Sam: “Getting to be a familiar sight - you flat on your back. Guess you didn’t hear me knock, huh? Your keys from the other night. I think it’s time you and me talked. The way I see it - the situation is. We have something in common - some ‘one’ in common. You following me so far? Kind of a shame it had to come down to this. You see - I like you David. And you’re hard not to like. But the fact remains, we got a problem. See -she’s real confused. Which is kinda funny cuz uh, I don’t think there’s anything to be confused about. I mean look at you. You’re a mess. Look at the way you live. Look at this place. Hey, don’t get me wrong. I mean - it’s kinda endearing. And I know that you like it. But, I happen to think that Maddie deserves better.”
David: “You do, huh?”
Sam: “Yup. Yeah, I sure do. See - I’ve known her for a long time. I know what she needs. I know what she wants. You're not even close. It’s like I said. She’s real confused. Kind of unfortunate. Last night I made her a proposition - a real serious proposition. One that I think under any other circumstances, she would have jumped at. See - what I’m trying to say - is that if you don’t really care about her - you should tell her. And if you do care about her....well, she should know that too. Its just that it’s real obvious who and what’s best for her. It’s real simple David. Why don’t you do everybody a favor and just back off.”
~~~~~~~~
(elevator doors open. Maddie walks slowly to the office)
Maddie: “Morning Ms. Dipesto.”
Agnes: “Good morning, Ms. Hayes”
(enters office - Maddie is surprised to see David sitting in her chair.)
David: “Why didn’t you tell me? (she runs out of the office and down the hall.) Maddie! Hey! Come here! He asked you, didn’t he!”
Maddie: “I don’t want to talk about it!”
David: “He did it, didn’t he!”
Maddie: “I don’t want to talk about!”
David: “You see I find this really interesting, that’s all. According to him, he asked you last night – noche - last night. Before you came to my place. Before we ran all over town. Hither and yon - yon and hither. Well, I don’t recall you mentioning it.”
Maddie: “You’re right I didn’t mention it. And you want to know why I didn’t mention it. I didn’t mention it because it’s none of your damn business!”
David: “None of my damn business! None of my damn business?!”
Maddie: “None of your damn business!!”
David: “Well – alright - maybe it is none of my damn business. But I got a right to know.”
Maddie: “Right to know. What right to know! You don’t have any right to know!”
David: “Oh no!”
Maddie: “No!!”
(elevator doors open – M&D walk in and out)
David: “He asked you didn’t he! He said it, right?!”
Maddie: “Stop it!”
David: “No! Look! He said it. Didn’t he?!”
Maddie: “Get out of here!!”
(elevator door close – Maddie is audibly frustrated. They head back to the office.)
Maddie: “I want to be alone!”
David: “So what did you say?”
Maddie: “I want to be alone.”
David: “You said that?”
Maddie: “I’m saying that!!”
David: “Are you saying you said that, or that you’re saying that?”
Maddie: “I wanna die.”
David: Whoa, whoa, whoa! Who’d you say that to?”
(Re-enters office)
Agnes: “You’re back!”
David: “You’re right.”
Maddie: You’re scum!"
(in office)
David: “I just want to talk to you about this.”
Maddie: “Why?”
David: “Why? Why, Maddie….”
Maddie: “David I asked you a question. Why should I talk to you about this. What difference will it make?”
David: “It’ll make a lot of difference.”
Maddie: “It won’t make any difference.”
David: “I don’t believe you’re saying this.”
Maddie: “The two of you act like you’re competing for me. Ms. Dipesto comes in here and makes speeches about how you’re falling apart. You walk around here like the jilted lover, like the world is coming to an end. Well, you’re not the jilted anything, David. You won’t even put yourself in the game. It’s not fair. You want me to tell you everything. But you tell me nothing. I don’t know how you feel. Am I supposed to think that because you chased me down the hall, that you care about me that you don’t want me to marry Sam?.... How about we do it all again. Only this time, I’ll chase you. How do you feel about me, David?! How do you feel about all this, David?! I have a right to know, don’t I? Don’t I!....Yes. He asked me to marry him. No. I haven’t said yes, yet. But yes, I’m thinking about it. He’s willing to make a commitment to me. How about you? If you want to say something, now’s the time to say it. If you want to talk, talk. C’mon David….speak now or forever hold your peace…Right....Are we through?”
David: “Sure sounds like it.”
Maddie: “Sure does.”
(fade out)
