Ok Kiddies...."take the kids, the dog, and grandma - and lock them in the closet...."
Act 4 -
The Big Bang is here.
Woohoo! In the interest of making this as visual as possible for those who haven’t seen this episode in a while, or who’ve never seen it….(BabyHayes.) I will add more direction in the dialogue – to better
visualize by.
(Fade in)(Maddie pulls up to her house, and sits in the car a few moments – struggling with what she’s going to do. She sighs. Then she enters her house. It’s dark. She looks in the living room, and then upstairs, then slowly accends the stairs to her fate. She opens the door – staring at Sam in bed. He stirs.)Maddie: “Sam. Don’t. Don’t move, don’t speak, don’t even look at me. This is so hard. You’re so wonderful. I don’t want you to think for a minute that I didn’t take your proposal seriously….It’s the most wonderful - the most important thing anyone’s every asked me….The thought of marrying you….having a family with you….
(sighs) I may hate myself for the rest of my life, but the cruel trick in all this is that if you’d asked me 5 or 10 years ago, the answer would have been different….But right now….I’m sorry. I know you think you know why, but you’re wrong….I care about you so much. I spend every waking minute trying to figure out how we can make it work. But I don’t see how we can. Not right now…not with….Sam, you deserve someone who loves you. Only you. And I do love you, but not only you….I know how difficult this is for you to hear. You can’t image how difficult it is for me to say
….( she moves towards the bed now.) I love you, Sam. You have to know that. But….I love him too. And I know that’s good enough for you. I know it means you’ll wanna leave, and maybe never see me again.
(she begins to take her clothes off) But do me a favor…(
sigh) Don’t. At least, not right now. Give me tonight. Give us tonight. We’ll hold each other. We’ll make love. We’ll sleep. And if I wake up and you’re not here, I’ll understand.
(gets under the covers and moves close to Sam) Just hold me, please. Oh Sam.”
David: “Oh, Maddie. Ooo, I like that.”
(Maddie shrieks – jumping out of the bed wrapping herself in the sheet. David sits up on the bed.)Maddie: “What are you doing here?!”
David: “I was gettin’ lucky.”
Maddie: “You are the most loathsome, the most disgusting, the most vile…”
David: “C’mon…how ya gonna know ‘til ya try.”
Maddie: “Where’s Sam?”
David: “Where’s Sam.”
Maddie: “Where’s Sam?”
David: “This line of questioning’s definitely gonna kill the mood.”
Maddie: “Where?”
David: “Sam’s gone.”
Maddie: “What do you mean gone!”
David: “Gone. As in going, going….”
Maddie: “I know what the word means, David. Where did he go? When will he…?”
David: “When I got here, his bags were packed.”
Maddie:
(sighs) “That’s it? No explanation, no goodbyes, no anything?”
(David reaches behind to grab a note left on the headboard tossing it to her on the bed. She picks it up, and begins reading it.)David: “Yeah. I was kinda surprised, too. I guess spelling doesn’t count for much in outer space.
(she gives him a dirty look) Breeze came up – blew it into my lap….Look. I came over here because I wanted to talk. I figured I owed him an apology. And I owed you an apology. And when I got here, he was on his way out the door. Said he didn’t see how you and him could make it work. That he thought you had some other things that you needed to take care of. I figured I’d stick around. I’ve been taking these pain pills.
(pushes on his shoulder) Your boy, Sammy, gave me a pretty good shot in the wing here. So I came up here and laid down, and the rest as they say, is “Kismet”.
(he smiles)Maddie: “Go home David.”
David: “Huh. You sure you really want me to do that?”
Maddie: “What?”
David: “Maddie, Sam’s gone…And we’re here.”
Maddie: “So?”
David: “So.”
Maddie: “So what, David. What are you saying?”
David: “What I’m saying is - we
(moves pillow on the bed) are here. The two of us. Together. Isn’t that what this is all about.”
Maddie: “No. That’s not what this is all about. This is about me. This is supposed to be about what I want. I was the one proposed to. I was the one who had a choice to make. Not a choice between two men, but a choice for my future. My life. But I’m not going to get a chance to make that choice. Because at least two people, and who knows how many others have been conspiring to make it for me.”
David: “That’s not true.”
Maddie: “You interrupt our dinner! He goes to your apartment to discuss the proposal. The two of you play Popeye and Bluto in the garage. Then he leaves, and you’re here. I don’t know why I bother showing up. Everything seems to get done perfectly well without me. The two of you did just fine by yourselves!”
David: “But what about just now?”
Maddie: “What about just now? I thought that was him, I didn’t know it was you.”
David: “Maddie, you said some things that I …”
Maddie: “And you didn’t. Nothing. Not during the whole thing, David. You haven’t said a word.”
David: “I don’t have to say anything.”
Maddie: “What do you mean you don’t have to say anything?”
(He smirks.)Maddie: “Stop smiling. Why are you smiling? How can you be so smug.”
David: “I’m not being smug. (gets out of bed) I’m being honest. I don’t have to say anything.
(Starts moving around the bed towards her.) You know it, and I know it. You feel it, and I feel it.”
Maddie: “Stay away from me.”
David: “Here I come.”
Maddie: “But I don’t want you. I never wanted
you.”
David: “Yeah, right. I heard the speech about the goodbye grope.”
Maddie: “But that was for him. Not for you. Wake up. I’m not leaving him for you. I’m leaving him for me. Me. me, me, me, me, me! Is that clear?!”
David: “Why don’t ya try it in C flat.”
Maddie:
(backed up against the side table – she grabs a vase – holding it as if to hit him.) “Get back!”
David: “Put that down, Maddie.”
Maddie: “No.”
David: “Put it down.”
Maddie: “No.”
David: “I’m not gonna force myself on you. I don’t wanna force myself on you. Tell you the truth, you’re not worth it.”
Maddie: “What?”
David: “You heard me.”
Maddie: “What do you mean, not worth it?”
David:
(He grabs his clothes.) “Not worth it. Not worth it. No woman is worth this, alright. Look. Never mind. I’ll just forget about it. This was never meant to be.”
(He heads downstairs to the living room. She follows – yelling at him from the landing.)Maddie: “I’m not worth it! I’m not worth it! Look who’s talking about worth – Mr. Bargain Basement! If there was a close-out sale on human beings, you’d be the last one to sell!”
David: “Yeah, you oughta know, honey!”
Maddie: “What does that mean?!”
David: “I’ll tell you what it means. It means that you’re the kind of person who goes through life looking at the price tag instead of the merchandise. You want some guy, went to a great school, great mug, nice manners. Well, that’s fine. Just fine. Makes sense. Look at you. You’re not a person. You’re a poster. Well, you deserve another poster.”
Maddie: “You’re going over the line, David.”
(She follows him downstairs, and into the livingroom.)David: “You spend more time dressing then you do smiling! You spend more time with business, then you do with pleasure!”
Maddie: “And you way’s better?! More time singing then working. More time screwing up then moving up!”
David: “Moving up! Is that what you believe in! Spare me.”
Maddie: “Is that what you believe in, huh?! What do you believe in – a good party!”
David:
(puts his pants on) “I’ll tell you what I believe in! I don’t believe in wasting anymore time! I’m sick of this! Two years of is-you-is-or-is-you-ain’t! Two years…”
Maddie: “Two years of bees-being and ducks-ducking in a man who thinks that culture is dark beer! I’m…This is ridiculous! I’m miserable!”
David: “So am I!”
Maddie: “Yeah, well. I may have just let the best thing that ever happened to me get away, and look at me! Here I am, spending the evening having another pointless conversation with you!!”
David: “Fine.”
Maddie: “Fine.”
David: “Good .”
Maddie: “Good.”
David: “Bitch.”
Maddie: “Bastard!”….(
slap!) ”Get out
!”....(slap!)….”Get out!!”
(Maddie goes to slap him again. He grabs her arm. Passion is unleashed. He pulls her in for a kiss. The fall to the floor – rolling around knocking over furniture. Cut to-close up of her bed. They slide over into frame – kissing. They look at each and smile – and move in to kiss again and FREEZE FRAME!)Hmmm….that season 3 ended with a BANG didn’t it… ;D
