Kara just helped me with the reference in Brother can you spare me a blonde when Dave and Rich call each other "Wally" and "Beave" (from Leave it to Beaver). It made me think that there are several references in Moonlighting that are very specific that some of us who aren't American or of a certain age might have missed or not understand.
I'll start off with a question I hope someone can answer - who is Jan Murray (as in "a regular Jan Murray")

I was wondering who that was too. Was that from My Fair David? From the biograhy you posted, it sounds like he was some sort of quiz show host for a time. I guess that's probably him. I can't remember exactly what context it was used in now. Wasn't Maddie saying how she had made an effort to loosen up and David replied 'yeah, you're a regular Jan Murray'?

I think I started a thread about something similar a while ago as well. Those of us from the States (and who were old enough to remember the '80s) sometimes forget that not everyone is going to recognize some of these references!

ok, I have one. In the beginning of Every Daughters Father when they are reading out the letters, David is wearing what looks like a white bandage which says something like McMahoan. I know I've spelt that wrong. Does anyone know what that means?

Ed McMahon was with publishers sweepstakes(enter to win a million dollars or ten million, something like that). It was very big in the 80's. I think I heard or read somewhere that Ed had been on the set that day giving out those headbands and Bruce left his on for that scene. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

Actually, it's a reference to then-quarterback of the Chicago Bears, Jim McMahon. Here are a couple of links to articles about him: The Wikipedia entry, and one from ESPN. He was known as someone you either loved or hated, a renegade to some and a pain to others, always getting into trouble (and he was known for his trademark headbands)...remind you of anybody at the agency? Hope that helps.

Hi Payger, Welcome to the boards Thanks for the Hollywood Squares info. I wonder which square he was...probably not center. I guess center would have been Paul Lynde at the time, just like Whoopie always was in the 80's? Anyway, I'm babbling. Again, welcome. Kara

Hey everyone, Just a couple more references here that I am not sure of and wondered if you guys can shed any light? In The Next Murder You Hear, during the early-bird stuff at the end, David says to Sonny "All right! Is the kid a natural-born salesman or what?" and Maddie says "Relax, Willy Loman!" Who he?!
And in The Murder's In The Mail, Maddie looks around the ransacked apartment and asks "Who would have done such a thing?" and David replies "The 7 Santini brothers" - Who they?!
And finally for now, in I See England, Maddie notes that Harry Soffer is likely to drive the car with the registration plate "H Soffer" and David says "You know you could turn out to be the next Honey West" So, who she?
