This was recently put on YouTube. It's a nice little snippet of some 1986 Moonlighting praise. Nothing we all didn't know but I love the way the writer talks about this new gem of a show: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS7TFZVRM1A

Stop it! stop it! stop it! But he won't stop it! ;D ;D Just amazing! So love old Moonlighting videos! It's such a pleasure to watch how people admired a moonlighting phenomenon back there! Thanks for sharing, Wim!

Nothing we all didn't know but I love the way the writer talks about this new gem of a show: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS7TFZVRM1AThe concept of City of Angels having been kept as a tax shelter, David having been "trained to run it--at a loss" has always eluded me, and because of this, I have chosen to ignore it. When David says in the pilot, "That's because we were supposed to lose money . . . it was our job to lose money" I thought it was just his smarminess. So can someone please explain this to me, once and for all?

Explain what, witness? Do you mean why CoA was supposed to lose money? I think losing this money Maddie's income was decreased and thus the income tax she had to pay. Or did I get your question wrong?

Or did I get your question wrong? Yes, I understood it that way, but there is this idea that they were failing on purpose, and the man in the video goes so far as to say David was " trained to run it--at a loss." Did someone come by with a booklet entitled "How to Successfully Run Your Business into the Ground"? Was this a trend in 1980s corporate America? I always thought that no one shut these (not on purpose) failing businesses down because the owner could claim the losses on his/her tax returns; not that they were failing intentionally.

Hmm, I think that there have always been and will always be these attempts to even open a business and to run it just as a black hole for you money to create tax-friendly losses. Not only in America, but everywhere. I think.

There are probably a few ways to look at this.....and until seeing that interview, I never ever thought of David being an active conspirator in making the business fail. That hurts my heart.
I know David tells Maddie they were supposed to lose money. I know that Ron Sawyer was a snake who was probably capable of anything nasty and illegal. But I just can't believe that David would have been involved in a swindle.
There are lots of ways that a failing business can gain tax breaks...including being insured for their losses, as well as some of the scenarios that Sandra has described.
Damn...I wish I hadn't watched that clip. Somebody help me feel better!

OK, so I have to share this because I got so excited when I checked my mail today! I wrote Cybill a letter a couple of months ago and today, TODAY I received an autographed photograph! I asked if she could send me one in my letter. OK, so it is from Studio Fan Mail - I guess they take care of these kinds of requests...but the first thought that came into my mind was "OMG!!! Cybill read MY letter and autographed this picture for ME!" It's still an autographed picture so... Bonnie is a happy girl tonight. Think I'll write to Bruce now. ;D

I always thought of it the way I described, the way her attorney described--that the businesses were maintained as write-offs, i.e., kept open despite being unlikely to turn a profit. And like I said about David's comment, I always heard it as his arrogance--"hey, I'm great at losing money, I can be great at making it too." I think somehow he was put in this position to just be a fun boss. And he made a fun boss great. Chin up, diane!

The disgust he has for Sawyer is palpable; there's no way he's ever collaborated with the guy. But he does know that he had won the lottery of jobs - to spend money to be a money-losing business. He just doesn't want the party to end!
