Not sure if this is something anyone else has noticed or even cares less about - but one thing that strikes me when I watch ML (or any other 80's show for that matter) is how quickly technology has changed. There are few references to computers in the show - except in the pilot - and of course today people use the internet for so much. The other thing that strikes me is the absence of cell phones - there are a number of scenes where M & D have to stop and use a pay phone -My Fair David, Symphony are 2 that spring to mind. My question is - How would modern technology e.g. the internet, cell phones etc impact (if at all) on our favourite show?

From memory i remember one epiosde where they used cellphones.Maddie actually is talking about the new cellphone David is making Maddie learn to use to Agnes about her frustration on this. It is a season 5 episode but don't remember off hand what episode. Can anyone tell us which episode? Also in season 4 beepers are introduced while Maddie is away in Chicago Bert gets them for David so Agnes can page him when /if Maddie calls. Can't remember that episode name off hand either. Any help with this episode name too?

The episode with the beepers is "Take a Left at the Altar".
I am absolutely no expert at season 5......I remember Maddie and Agnes discussing the cell phone......if I were going to make a guess, I would probably say "Perfetc", but with very little conviction.
And speaking of the technology, take a gander at the computers they had in the office -- absolutely huge! I know Cindy can give us chapter and verse on which computers they actually are.......maybe she'll drop in and give us the skinny.

The one where they discuss the complexities of the cell phone - isn't that the one where Agnes has "Bert beard burn" and wants to chat to Maddie about it? I don't know I could be totally wrong....

For some reason Channel 9 (who had the broadcast rights originally in Oz) didn't show Series 5 or at least not at prime time so I have never seen these much discussed in different posts episodes. I had not realised that they started using cell phones near the end. This Annie sounds like a real piece of work!

The cell phones are in Plastic Fantastic Lovers. But I don´t recall anyone actually using them.. Probably never figured out how to. While we´re on the subject of technology.. In Shirts and Skins, Bert hacks into a computer to find personal information about "the nut case on a shooting spree" (can´t remember her name).

Glad you found that out Rose, that was bugging me! I do always look at their computers and Agnes' phone in the office and marvel at their size compared with the compact slimline designs of today. No idea what type of machines they got there though, I don't know these things but it is fun to compare these differences. ;D

Imagine all the ringing around that David and Maddie have to do as well as all the leg work because of no internet. I'm thinking of To Heiress Human....where does Maddie get all the info on Robert Murphy? She certainly seems to have a comprehensive guide to his past. What about in Bride of Tupperman. David could have looked on-line to find a mate for Alan. Of course, it might not have been so humorous! Lastly, what about Blonde on Blonde - Sam could have left a message on Maddie's voicemail - no need for to go home to find out he was in town. Hmmmm. Would that have made a difference? Just speculating!

ooh, very interesting, funkycat. I'm thinking it worked better the way we know it. Sometimes, in shows today, the technology is overkill. I find it distracting. ML had such good story/character development.

I always get a kick out of seeing the old-school technology in the show. We thought that stuff was top of the line back then! ;D I can remember learning actual programming on the Apple IIE in junior high. Every time I see some kind of tape machine or transcriber thingy on ML, or get a look at the old green-on-black computer screens, it makes me smile.

Oh yeah! I remember actually making the LA skyline with "X's" and "O's" with "Moonlighting" written across the top (like on the show open) on one of those old TRS-80s. God, I'm old!

Just watched A Womb With A View and noticed the big chunky mobile phone Jerome uses - can't think if we see a mobile phone before this episode or not. But then again he had a direct line to The Creator, so maybe that was a perk of the job ;D
