On a scale from 1-10, what do you give "Big Man on Mulberry Street"?

Hi, this episode is by far my favourite because it's a turning point in the story since we learn more about Dave's private life. His sensitive side is revealed here and I think that for the first time Maddie realizes how much she cares for him!!! The dancing scene is so brilliant that the first time I saw it , I kept watching it over and over again ... ;D Maddie's attraction for Dave is clearly exposed in this dream sequence !! Thats why I gave it a 10!! Anne

I gave this episode a 10 as well. Maybe for the first time M&D realize and also show the other one a bit of their feelings for eachother. Maybe they don`t say it but just the way they act. Maddie flying to NYC in the middle of the night, waiting in the hotel room the whole time. David calling her from the pub where he and his buddies are drinking beer just to let her know that he arrived safely. And the concern when he asks her on the answering machine what she is doing out at this time of night. And the scene on the plane when she asks to borrow half a shoulder and he says "for the next 20 or 30 years then I´m gonna need it back". Its hilarious. Okay, I´ll stop now and watch the episode again...

A 10 on this one, also I have it. The dream sequence is very well made. I simply love it. And I also I love when Maddie is in the hotel, and David opens the door, and she was there Makes me cry watching this part. And the last sence, when they go home, and she lays her head on his shoulder,so romantic.

I didn't like this episode. I prefer episodes where they at least make some pretext of working on a case. It was supposed to be a detective show after all.
I did think the argument in the hotel room between David and Maddie about her attending the funeral was hilarious, but the rest of the show didn't do much for me. Sorry.

Well, it wasn't so great episode. According to my feelings. We learn a lot about David's past and their feelings, but it wasn't fantastic episode. I liked moment when lust Maddie kissed David in hr dream. That was funny And the end, when they share blanket and shoulder. But, I don't understand her. Thats ok if you think you could help, but you can't act like a little child whom is not allowed to do something. And when he didn't want to take her to funeral. I understand she was jealous, but to go to Madisons house (I didn't spel regural).. that was quite.. I don't know how to explain. Silly. Jealousy.

Although Bruce is rather self-deprecating about his performance in the dance number (see Season 3 DVD special features), I've always been impressed with his ability to keep up with such amazing professional dancers. It is a great number and, IMO, he did a fabulous job.
After seeing this episode a few times, it slowly dawned on me that the timing of something didn't seem quite logical:
Agnes comes into Maddie's office and tells her it is 6:03 p.m. and that everyone has gone home. They talk, then rifle through David's desk looking for pictures, before each going home, where Maddie takes a leisurely bath and does whatever else before getting into bed. She dreams of David, wakes up with a start and calls the airline for the next available flight. She gets dressed, packs, gets to the airport and flies from Los Angeles to New York City, where she catches a cab to the hotel. She then has a conversation with the hotel manager about getting a room next door to David's, and when management won't allow it, she somehow breaks into David's room (because if they're not going to give her the room next door, they're certainly not going to give her the key to his room, which means that she probably brought Mr. Stickpin along. *G* ) Now, David comes back to his hotel room (still dark outside) to find Maddie, who , feeling embarrassed about what she has done (and has had time to check on times for the next return flight as well), is sitting demurely on his bed as though she has been patiently waiting there for some time.
When you factor in the three hour time difference between LA and NYC, how can this possibly be? *L* I know, I know. I'm not really taking it seriously, just wondering about the possibilities. If she took a Concorde...
Anyway, with the point I took off for the reality factor and the extra point I added on for the incredible dance number, I still give this one a 10.

You do have a point, but maybe it is supposed to be the next day/night. If Maddie got an AM flight out of LA, then she would have arrived in NY the next evening. Possible?

Yes, certainly possible. I think it's the sequence of the scenes that confuses me.
At the point we see Maddie calling the airline, the next scene shows David having a wake with his friends at a bar. He calls Maddie from the bar, leaves her a message that he arrived okay and what she is doing out so late. Then, immediately thereafter, he's walking down the hall to his hotel room where he finds Maddie waiting. It just feels very immediate.
Now I'll have to watch it again and look for time clues. *G*

An Excellent episode! It has it all: - Screwball comedy: the scene with Maddie and David at the start and his explanation ("There was a big accident" - "What? A gin truck overturned") and the banter ;D The right stuff to spice things up for the rest - Drama: David finds out about his brother-in-law death and Maddie about David's marriage. - Emotional Burst: Maddie freaks out about David's ex-wife - in an awesome dream sequence - and rushes to New York in order to stay close to him - Revelations: David opens his heart to Maddie regarding his ex-wife and marriage, Maddie discovers that David is not chauvinistic at all but hurt from women (especially the fact that his ex-wife left him for another woman). She is shocked by the news - about his lesbian ex-wife - and feels for David. - Romance: The dialogue between Maddie and David at the airplane. 10+

This is one of my favorite episodes because for one it's the first times Maddie shows another side of her when it comes to David and David once again shows his vulnerablilty. I give it a 10 most definitely!

I’m trying to think of any episode of ML that I’ve enjoyed more and…I simply can not! On a scale of 1 to 10 if I could give this a 20 I would, but 10 it is! BMOMS was so very good – ML at one of its ultimate heights. And not only because of the phenomenal dream dance sequence but for all the reasons that Frontier listed. Billy Joel’s song was David to a tee by the way. It was perfect.
I thought Maddie’s awkward explanation about why she followed David to New York was one of Cybill’s best scenes ever on the show. She was great. I loved the look on David’s face when she started to leave but he said he wanted her to stay. (He did say that, right? That he wanted her to stay – or that she could stay?)
We really get to see in this ep that David’s personal feelings run very deep. After all these years he is still terribly hurt that his wife cheated on him in addition to “dissing” his manhood by choosing a woman over him. That’s a big ‘ouch!’
During the Big Bang arc, there was some thread discussion about what David’s silence and stillness meant. For a guy with the gift of gab - when David’s feelings are intense and at the surface he is completely silent. It’s interesting. What does this say about him?
I liked the short breakfast intro at the beginning. It was just so perky and made me hungry. Also Maddie and Agnes rummaging through David’s office for an ex-wife picture and finding quirky David-items was funny.
I’ve mostly commented on season 4 and 5 episodes and particularly in S4 I had expressed some negative views of Maddie. But I must say I sided with her wholeheartedly in the beginning concerning David’s irresponsible behavior. Yes, I still thought he was inexplicably attractive and adorable as a hung-over mess but Maddie was so right about what she said to him and he was completely unapologetic. I love David to distraction, I really do, but this was one of the few times I found myself gritting my teeth over his behavior. There’s no way I could work with someone who acted like that on a regular basis. Personally I think Maddie let him off easy in this episode because he was absolutely ridiculous. But it was all worth it for the great banter!

Umm Actually it's one of my least favourite of season 3 .. I loved it too of course, season 3 was amazing, but I dunno, it wasn't funny, & it was too dark for me & I didn't like the dance either, Maddie was there for 2 seconds ..
