OK, I know I'm late to the party here, but I just rewatched this episode and wondered if I could add a few observations to the excellent essing that's been going on... Maddie on the bed: IMO, She looks SAD--her shoulders slump, and she's staring at the bedside table as though hoping it will give her some answers. She also looks sad outside the restaurant...and regretful. I think David's behavior at dinner has pained her--not just embarrassed her. She can see that he wants to take the upper hand with Sam, and it was painful to watch this man that she cares very much about make such an idiot of himself. I think that, at dinner, she hasn't made up her mind which way she wants things to go with Sam (in fact, there's a moment where both men are standing by the table, and she looks from one of them to the other, symbolic of needing to choose between them). She seems ready to listen to David's "decision," too. (BTW, does anyone think Sam hid around the corner of the booth and purposely broke in just at the most inopportune time??? Heh heh heh...twirls his mustache... ;D) Then poor David falls flat on his face in the "Impress Maddie" Sweepstakes, and I think Maddie just feels so...deflated. Here's Captain America, handsome, educated, all aw-shucks about his incredible accomplishments...and here's a guy in a borrowed (ripped) jacket, slurring his words, whose credit card gets declined. As has been said many times, Sam represents the kind of life she thought she should have: success and stability. David is a wild card--she doesn't know if she can count on him, or even if he WANTS to be counted on. Nonetheless, I get the feeling, both outside the restaurant and on her bed, that's she's wishing the night went differently...that David could've shown Sam up in some way...that he could've been the guy she wants him to be. But she's tired of being alone and lonely. She's probably tired of the ups and downs with David--roller coaster rides are exhilarating, but they can make you queasy, too. She knows that Sam wants to rekindle things, and after that dinner, it starts to seem like Sam's her best option. So, when he gets home, instead of coming down to meet him, hold him off with a little chat and then a "What a night! I'm so tired," she calls him upstairs. She knows what's gonna happen once he gets to the "final frontier"--I think she's resigned, but also maybe hoping that she'll feel MORE with Sam once they're really...together. And I'm probably reading too much into this, but the whole time they are dancing...etc....Maddie's eyes are CLOSED. And she never once smiles.

As has been said many times, Sam represents the kind of life she thought she should have: success and stability. David is a wild card--she doesn't know if she can count on him, or even if he WANTS to be counted on. I see what you're saying here and I know those things are going through her mind. At the same time, although Sham is safe and they have history...David was there for her when she was "down and out"...no money and no understanding of how she was going to get back on her feet. There's a loyalty she has for David because of this, his optimism allowed her to rebuild her life. Where the hell was Sam when she had nothing? I don't know, but David was there and I kind of see that back and forth, weighing the pro's and con's thing when she looks between the two men. Nonetheless, I get the feeling, both outside the restaurant and on her bed, that's she's wishing the night went differently...that David could've shown Sam up in some way...that he could've been the guy she wants him to be. I don't know, yes I think she wished the night had gone differently but the reason I feel is because Maddie is now very curious to the reason David interrupted her dinner with Sham. Maddie is looking at David's demeanor and she is puzzled. The way she is looking at him, up and down sometimes, trying to read him. Yet the look is not bad, it's still amorous in a way. Maddie looks at David totally different than she looks at Sham. It's not the same intensity. But she's tired of being alone and lonely. She's probably tired of the ups and downs with David--roller coaster rides are exhilarating, but they can make you queasy, too. She knows that Sam wants to rekindle things, and after that dinner, it starts to seem like Sam's her best option. I think Maddie had resolved that she was going to sleep with Sham because of all the fuss she made earlier...getting her hair done, buying a new dress "cut down to South America". Although I don't think Maddie ever really felt alone because she had David, but the loneliness is definitely there because there was no real romantic effort from David, like Sham is making. I think she's resigned, but also maybe hoping that she'll feel MORE with Sam once they're really...together. Great observation! And I'm probably reading too much into this, but the whole time they are dancing...etc....Maddie's eyes are CLOSED. And she never once smiles. I just checked this out and boy you are on point, she does have her eyes open a little while but it's not until she closes her eyes that she begins to loosen up and really dance with Sham. What do I read into this? Maddie looks as if it doesn't feel right when her eyes are open, it's almost unnatural to her...yet when she closes her eyes, I think she's imagining that Sham is David. Going back to Maddie wishing the night had gone differently, that David had been the one to come home with her. It was awkward for Maddie because even if she had heard what David had to say... what would she have done with Sham? And you're right, Maddie never smiles during the dance; yet when she closes her eyes, she allows herself to just feel the warmth of another body close to her. The thing that she had been longing to feel from David. I'd like to add, when she is laying there in the last few seconds while Sham is asleep, her expression says so much. "What have I done?" "OMG, nothings changed in my mind about David" "I shouldn't have done this." What am I going to do now?" There is even a small "gulp" she noticeably takes...symbolic to me of her trying to swallow the bitter pill that is her realizing that she was wrong. Sham was a replacement, a filler and although Sam is more established and disciplined...he's not David and that's who she desires. Maddie realizes, if only for that moment, all the things she thought mattered really don't.

Heh heh heh...twirls his mustache... ;D) Jpen, oh yes, very maniacal, "inopportune" is right. Cowardly ear hustling, Sham knew as a man, what David was on because of his visit the night before... (in the rain with the flowers) And another thing I thought was interesting; Sham never told Maddie, David stopped by ...humm...

David has seen her at her lowest (and at some of her best moments too); Sam hasn't seen her at all! If we want to add to Sam (Sham)'s sins--and I'm assuming we do --it's the height of hubris to drop back into someone's life and expect to take it over. He courts her (for 3 whole days!) with lamb and cornflakes, but we never see him ask Maddie how her life is now, and what she wants...in fact, he doesn't really ask her anything. He tells her: "Come here," "Marry me" etc. David, in contrast, maintains total radio silence...which is its own issue... Sorry--I've totally wandered from your original point. Ol' Sammy got me pretty worked up there for a minute!

It's hardly the look you'd expect a woman to have after she's been intimate with the man she wants to marry...IMO, the game is up for her right here!

I guess "Sham" was very confident in their history and took for granted that he was the best for her...humm...now why in heaven's name would he think that ...didn't he watch the show? LOL

[Maddie realizes, if only for that moment, all the things she thought mattered really don't. sinceifell, right on point. I would like to take it a step further and say that she is still feeling this way the next morning. Notice how Sam asks her if she is OK when they awake. Seems that he could sense that she wasn't "poppin' her buttons" over the night before. Then in the office- Maddie makes it by Agnes and then stares out her window before running to get behind her desk when Agnes knocks. After Herbert's frenetic discourse on his surveillance antics, she just sits at her desk, obviously disturbed, trying to decide what to do. Finally, she pulls herself up and wanders into David's office and tries to get him to say what he couldn't say the night before. She is definitely conflicted.

He tells her: "Come here," "Marry me" etc. jpen Yeah, he was really pouring it on thick, wasn't he? He knew he had some competition after he left David standing in the rain. He doesn't ask her anything about her life and David knows more about her now, past and present, and it only took what, 3 years? And David's silence? I see this partly as his insecurity over the whole thing. I mean he just came from her house where he stood in the rain ready to bare his soul to her and that schmuck answers the door!! He did not know who he was. He thought Maddie had actually gone through with what she said she was going to do.....be bad....really bad!! LOL! So his silence the next morning is partly understandable. But, after Sham shows up at his apt. to tell him to back off, I think his silence with him shows his desire for her to be happy and to make her own choice. He thinks he knows how Maddie feels at this point. They shared a kiss on the trunk by golly!! That is until he has had time to brood over it and waits for Maddie the next morning in her office. How could she not have told him about Sam's proposal?? He was ready to talk then, I think. Until Maddie acted like the kiss never happened. Very puzzling, no? The ol' Ms. Hayes Supremes imititation again! He was definiitely hurt and just plain dumbfounded. Ok, I know I steered way off course here, but Maddie's look in the End Scene foreshadowed what was to come.......all the way to the 5th season!!!
