The brief one, after Maddie gets in the house. Am I the only one who thinks it wasn't from Maddie's mother? ;D
I've always thought it was David, trying to check up on her. That might sound odd, until you consider the facts that the discussion was very brief--"Nothing going on here," or words to that effect--and that it was apparently very early in the morning, just after sunrise based on the very end of the last episode and the way the light looks when she walks into the house in this one.
Some people do like to get up early, but who calls their daughter at an hour when they know, because she works, she (on a normal day) would barely be getting out of bed at that hour?
Weird. Then there's the way that if it is her mother, the woman expresses such piffling and lightweight concern about what her daughter is doing. I mean, if you're going to call your (only) daughter, who lives in another state, and you only get to see her once a year or so (I'm guessing), wouldn't you want to talk more than the few seconds the call lasts? I know Maddie kind of brushes her off, but still, to me it looks strange to go to that length just to say nothing much.
Now, whom do we know had most recently seen Maddie, and had reason to be concerned about her state, and to see if she got home okay?
You know Maddie would not be able to just say, "Oh, hi, David," right in front of Sam. That would be the last straw. She still hasn't made her choice between the two men, not openly anyway, and I don't think she wanted to provoke a fight this early in the morning, so she pretended David was Mom.
Sam probably already thought the worst, after discovering Maddie's hasty departure from the house, then hearing that she was with Dave again, even if it was just to go on a case.
Think about it. Maddie left Sam in bed, and then talks about another guy, even if it was just a business runaround. Sam really does not show his temper with Maddie, with the exception of somewhat raising his voice when they're in the car after his fight with Dave, but I'll bet it had to be driving him nuts under the surface.
When he tells her to get some sleep, it might not be just because he knows she's tired. Rather, he wants to be sure where she is for a few hours! Otherwise, she'll go right to work and be with that Dave guy again... Sam already views David as a serious threat, whether he broadcasts it to Maddie or not. Sam's proposal itself sounded like a thrown-together preventative.
Remember the lonely image of Sam waiting on the couch for Maddie to come home. That whole dinner he cooked up and even kept warm as he sat up for hours...
Next time, he only greets her with a bowl of cornflakes.
He's getting tired, and ticked off, even though he doesn't often let it show. Nobody's that laconic. Everyone has a breaking point, and even Mr. Wonderful's going to reach his pretty soon.
He heads over to David's place to tell him to go to hell.
All bets are off.
