Synopsis of Seasons 4&5 Do not read if you don't want details Season 4 opens with Maddie and David in a 'relationship' that Maddie is uncomfortable with. They started in the 'middle' and she doesn't know how to start at the beginning or move forward. David tries very hard to sooth her feelings, but in the end Maddie can't handle it and she runs away to her parents house in Chicago.
{This is all a plot line to accommodate Cybill's real life pregnancy.}Maddie spends months at her parents house locked up in her room - not telling her parents the real reason she's there, and keeping David at bay by telling him that she needs her space and not to contact her. David is at a complete loss. He's so shocked that she left that he doesn't know what to do with himself. He spends the months waiting for her to come home by partnering up with Viola on cases that only remind him of Maddie. At one point, he tries to move on by having a one night stand, but can't do it.
In Chicago, Maddie's mother figures out that Maddie is pregnant, and tells her she has to deal with David. Maddie leaves a message for Agnes that she's pregnant and not to tell David. Agnes tells Burt the secret news. Of course, it's not long before David finds out and he rushes to the airport. While waiting in the airport bar, he befriends a man that turns out to be a convicted felon being transported. Hundley causes a distraction and handcuffs David to the officer, taking David's wallet. David not having any ID to prove he's not the prisoner, ends up in prison for a month. He finally gets out of prison and returns home. There is a message from Maddie on his answering machine thanking him for respecting her wishes, and giving her the space she needs. At the end of the message, she tells him that she loves him. He decides not to go to Chicago.
Maddie's father is finally told that she is pregnant. He's thrilled, but not with David. He secretly flies to LA to confront David. Mr. Hayes tells David that he should be a man and take responsibility for Maddie and the baby by marrying her. David doesn't get the chance to truly tell him what he's feeling so he follows Mr. Hayes onto the flight back to Chicago. On the plane, David confronts Mr. Hayes telling him that he loves Maddie, that he did ask her to marry him, but she said no. That she was involved with Sam at the same, and the baby might not be his. But despite all that, he loves her so much that he would lay down his life for her. Mr. Hayes finally understands the whole story, and David returns to LA.
David is bound and determined to be the best husband and father he can be by reading baby books and joining a lamaze class. He's paired up with a single pregnant woman named Teri. David and Teri become good friends, and almost become involved. But Teri knows it won't work because David loves Maddie. She tells him so and he says no matter what he's going to be there for her through the rest of her pregnancy and the birth.
Maddie finally decides it's time to go home. She takes a long train trip home, and meets a man named Walter. He's the exact opposite of David, and even though Maddie doesn't tell him the truth of her relationship with David at first, she ends up confiding in him about her troubles. During the trip home, Maddie has dreams about a potential life with David and the baby. And as she gets closer and closer, she becomes very uneasy, and wonders if she's making a mistake. She even dreams that the train she's on is on a collision course with the agency. It's a disturbing dream, and Walter is there to comfort her.
Everyone at Blue Moon is decorating the office in anticipation of Maddie's return. Maddie walks in unnoticed. Agnes sees her, and everyone goes crazy. They're all very happy to have her back. In the chaos of hugs and questions, Maddie sees David leaning against his office door. They smile at each other. In grand style, the office staff hold up their noise makers to form an arch. David and Maddie cross to each other and hug. David can't believe she's finally home. They go into her office. He asks to touch her stomach, and is so thrilled to feel the baby. He holds her, kissing her softly on the neck. Maddie pulls away, and says two words he thought he'd never hear. "I'm married." And the baby isn't his, it's Sam's. He blown away by this. And when he finds out that she married a man she'd met on the train named Walter Bishop in Las Vegas after only knowing him for 3 days, all he can do is laugh histerically. She says she loves Walter, which to David is even funnier.
So we spend the next several episodes with Maddie being married to Walter. David and the rest of Blue Moon can't wait to meet him. Season 5 synopsisSeason 5 opens with Maddie very near her due date, and things are better between them. A Womb With a View is told from the perspective of Baby Hayes. Maddie's child is visited by the Angel Jerome who is there to teach him about the world and who his parents are. In this episode, we find out that David is indeed the father. Jerome shows Baby Hayes, (played by Bruce in a diaper), mini movies of the state of the world, but more importantly his parents.
While all this is going on, David, Maddie and the gang are having a party to celebrate the impending birth. As Maddie and David are dancing, something goes wrong. In the womb, Jerome gets a message that things have changed. That Baby Hayes is not meant to be with his parents. Baby Hayes doesn't understand why. But Jerome assures him that everything will be fine, and takes Baby Hayes up a stairway back to heaven. Maddie crumbles to the floor in David's arms - she miscarries. And they never know that David is really the father of the baby.
In the next episode, Maddie and David are not dealing with the loss. And are finally forced to when Agnes and Burt intervene by getting them stuck in the elevator together. After hours of elevator music and silence between them, neither one can avoid the pain any longer. David lashes out at the elevator speaker that's been blaring at them for hours frightening Maddie who starts sobbing. They fall to the floor, and David holds her while she cries. After a while, they feel better, and sing songs as the elevator doors finally open. They walk down the hall together singing.
After this, they just seem to get back to business with crazy cases and even crazier chase scenes. There are a few moments between them, but the spark is gone. Maddie goes into therapy, and after awhile decides that she is over David.
Enter Maddie's cousin, Annie. She shows up for a visit after having a fallout with her husband. Even though David knows that she is married, he ends up smitten with Annie. They spend a lot of time together which doesn't really faze Maddie. Annie is confused about her marriage and David. But David doesn't care. Annie is so different from Maddie. It's very easy to be with her. She ends up moving into his apartment with him.
In the final episode, Annie's husband Mark comes looking for her. David sees that it can't work with Annie after meeting Mark and breaks it off with her. Annie and Mark leave.
{And then because the show got cancelled we have a whirlwind ending} Agnes and Burt get married. The agency gets shut down. And in the final couple of minutes, David and Maddie rush off to a church because they think they should just do it and get married. They rush into a church, find a priest, telling him that he has to hurry up and marry them because there's only a few minutes left. The priest says he can't marry them when they shouldn't really be getting married. So they end up sitting in the church alone together not believing it could really be over. And Maddie says she can't imagine not seeing him every day. They're both visibly upset. We fade to a montage of them over the years, and then...
IT'S OVER. THE END.
