Very touching, very sad, Rose. What do you think, whose lines would those be?

I love it. He is SO in love with Maddie.

I couldn't help but chuckle when I listened to this tune for the umpteenth time. Hall & Oates hailed from Philly with their Soul/R&B-infused pop sound. The cheekiness notwithstanding, I think the song is well-suited for our duo: "Private Eyes" I see you, you see me Watch you blowin' the lines When you're making a scene Oh girl, you've got to know What my head overlooks The senses will show to my heart When it's watching for lies You can't escape my Private Eyes They're watching you They see your every move Private Eyes They're watching you Private Eyes They're watching you Watching you Watching you Watching you You play with words You play with love You can twist it around, baby That ain't enough 'Cos girl I'm gonna know If you're letting me in Or letting me go Don't lie When you're hurting inside 'Cos you can't escape my Private Eyes They're watching you They see your every move Private Eyes They're watching you Private Eyes They're watching you Watching you Watching you Watching you [Instrumental Interlude] Why you try to put up a front for me I'm a spy but on your side, you see Slip on into any disguise I'll still know you Look into my Private Eyes They're watching you They see your every move Oh, babe, Private Eyes They're watching you Private Eyes They're watching you, yeah They see your every move They see it Ooooh, they're watching you Private Eyes They're watching you...

I was driving in my car this afternoon and this song came on the radio. I mean I've heard it before but since I have joined this website more and more things remind me of Moonlighting. The song is "Not Meant To Be" by Theory of the Dead... really it is like David is singing it to Maddie!

Here are the lyrics: Not Meant To Be"
It's never enough to say I'm sorry It's never enough to say I care But I'm caught between what you wanted from me And knowing that if I give that to you I might just disappear Nobody wins when everyone's losing [Chorus:] It's like one step forward and two steps back No matter what I do you're always mad And I, I can't change your mind I know it's like trying to turn around on a one way street I can't give you what you want And it's killing me And I, I'm starting to see Maybe we're not meant to be It's never enough to say I love you No, it's never enough to say I try It's hard to believe That's theres no way out for you and me And it seems to be the story of our lives Nobody wins when everyone's losing [Chorus] There's still time to turn this around You could be building this up instead of tearing it down But I keep thinking Maybe it's too late [Chorus] It's like one step forward and two steps back No matter what I do you're always mad And I, baby I'm sorry to see Maybe we're not meant to be

I just listened to my Best of Sheryl Crow CD and found a beautiful song that seems very Maddie-ish to me! What d'you say? Strong enough
God I feel like hell tonight the tears of rage I cannot fight I'd be the last to help you understand are you strong enough to be my man
Nothing's true and nothing's right so let me be alone tonight 'cause you can't change the way I am are you strong enough to be my man
Lie to me I promise I'll believe lie to me but please don't leave
I have a face I cannot show I make the rules up as I go it's try and love me if you can are you man enough to be my man
When I've shown you that I just don't care when I'm throwing punches in the air when I'm broken down and not can stand would you be man enough to be my man
Lie to me I promise I'll believe lie to me but please don't leave I love this one. I have trouble visualizing Maddie listening to anything but jazz (jazz melodies just fit her in the same way Motown and rock and roll fit David), but the lyrics are all Maddie. "Stormy Weather" by Billie Holiday. Another Billie Holiday song that has 'Maddie' written all over it is "The Man I Love." It's pure class. I can imagine her having it in her vinyl collection and drinking herself to sleep to it on a lonely night. Another jazz standard that I think is all Maddie is Miles Davis' "Generique" from the French new wave movie "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud" with Jeanne Moreau. Check out this scene: www.youtube.com/watch?v=saG7EELIfMM . They did a noir episode, but I wish they'd done a French new wave episode. This movie would have been the perfect template. Can you imagine Maddie in this scene? Because I sure can. This scene was made for Maddie to recreate. It has the kind of sultry but classy sensuality I associate with Maddie. And David would fit right in because the men of the French new wave were detective/gangster types with a rock and roll flair. They worshiped Humphrey Bogart, noir, and rock and roll. Too bad they didn't take a shot at this movie because it's so Maddie and David. Oh well. Probably no one in the crew was a huge fan of the French new wave. All in all, for some reason I associate Maddie with the vocal jazz of the '30s and '40s, eg. Billie, Ella, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, some Charlie Parker, maybe some very light bebop, perhaps some cool jazz like Lionel Hampton's "Midnight Sun", and maybe something like Bunny Berigan's "I Can't Get Started with You." Anything from the '30s and '40s is fair game because it's nicely structured, but I think she'd be less likely to listen to the free jazz of John Coltrane, or Herbie Hancock, or Dexter Gordon, or anything after 1958/9 (except maybe Sinatra).

How about an oldie "Love Me to Want You" by Lobo.
I'd Love You To Want Me lyrics
When I saw you standing there
I about fell off my chair
And when you moved your mouth to speak
I felt the blood go to my feet
Know it took time for me to know
What you tried so not to show
Something in my soul just cries
I see the want in your blue eyes
: Oh baby, I'd love you to want me
The way that I want you
The way that I should be
Oh baby, you'd love me to want you
The way that I want to
If you'd only let it be
Know it took time for me to know
What you tried so not to show
Something in my soul just cries
I see the want in your blue eyes
Oh baby, I'd love you ...
You told yourself years ago
You'd never let your feelings show
The obligation that you made
For the title that they gave
Oh baby, I'd love you ...

Some beautiful suggestions for Maddie music.
Although I think jazz works for Maddie, I guess that impression is influenced by Cybill's own forays into music and her success with that genre.
As far as Maddie, I don't think I'd put her in a box. I certainly think she would be a fan of and associated with some sultry and beautiful ballads as well as the jazz.....I coul d also see her being drawn to some of the gorgeous soul tunes of the time period of the show.
And I smile to think that she might occasionally have some fun bopping to some of those pop tunes of the 70s and 80s.

The song's a bit too sappy for my liking because I'm a cold-hearted Bee, but the lyrics to Joe Cocker's "A Woman Loves a Man" remind me of season 4 Maddie and David when Maddie is in Chicago:
Joe Cocker - "A Woman Loves a Man"
Sometimes love can't explain Each and every rule of the game Still remains a mystery to me By any other name
Why she can't make up her mind While he decides to stay While one surrenders And the other one's away But it's too much to understand Still a man loves a woman; and
[Chorus]
When a woman loves a man A woman loves a man She does what she can do He does the best he can
x2
And I look into her eyes When the world is out of hand And I'm so happy
When a woman loves a man When a woman loves a man A woman loves a man..... A woman loves a man
No moon tonight No nothing to guide me Still I will find her Standing beside me
x2
There's darkness everywhere Still I'll find her Standing beside me Standing beside me
She's a woman of strength He's a man of conviction But sometimes the truth Is stronger than fiction
[Chorus]
When a woman loves a man A woman loves a man She does what she can do He does the best he can
x2
No moon tonight No nothing to guide me Still I will find her Standing beside me
x3
When a woman loves a man A woman loves a man She does what she can do But I do all I can...
