Pat Conroy is one of my absolute favorites! One of my former student's mothers gave me The Water Is Wide as a gift many years ago and I just fell in love with his style. I immediately ran out and got The Lords of Discipline and The Great Santini. I was reading LOD at the time of my brother's graduation from college and I remember stealing every spare second I could to read a few pages here and there between ceremonies. I finished it in the car on the way home and cried like a baby! I am mostly in love with the way he writes about such not-funny situations in such a funny way. He has such a great sense of humor about himself, too.

I definitely own and have read "A Place to Fall". It is a slightly amusing novel, but snipey, with pretty thinly veiled insults directed at a character that is rumored to be Bruce playing David Addison.
It was a lot of years ago, but seemed pretty petty of Roger Director. And I think it might be his only novel.........just saying!

Oooops...I stand corrected. Roger Director has also written a book about the 2006 New York Giants......don't think I will be reading that one.

I am now on a classic trek.
Over the last couple of months I have read Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath (really good but really sad, too!). I had read this before in college, but wanted to read it again. And East of Eden. I loved this----what a story!!
Presently, due to a little ML influence, I am reading Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises and intend to follow that up with A Farewell to Arms.
Anyway. happy reading everyone!!

Just finished "The Water is Wide" by Pat Conroy because of callmeditzy's recommendation. All teachers should read this!
I loved it.
"My Losing Season" is next for me.

I'm so glad you liked it, beesnbears! I re-read it every couple of years because it's just that great. I have My Losing Season, too, and it's wonderful. I've never been on a basketball team, I'm completely non-athletic, but I loved reading this book. Conroy's style and insight and humor is so fantastic that the subject matter is almost irrelevant.

OK, I don't know if there are any Anglophiles out there...but I have been re-reading one of my favorite authors, P.G. Wodehouse, the creator of the inimitable valet Jeeves and his daffy employer Bertie Wooster. The dialogue is snappy, and Wodehouse mixes an incredibly dry (think martini) wit with slapstick situation comedy...hilarious! Also, a nice escapist read for these tough times, if you like that sort of thing, as the biggest crises in his books revolve around losing a top-notch French chef and becoming accidentally engaged to the wrong girl. He wrote 96 books, so you probably could find several at the local library!

I read The Gate House by Nelson DeMille a couple of months ago. His style of writing is very amusing. Kind of tongue in cheek, wise-cracking and "this is how I see it so this is how I'm gonna tell it!!"
I am on a Pat Conroy kick again. I have read all of his books now except The Lords of Discipline. I am about a third of the way through it though.
If you have not read My Losing Season I highly recommend it. You do not have to be a basketball fan to enjoy it. Just beautifully written.

I am now reading James Frey's second book "My Friend Leonard".
You might remember he is the one who took it on the lip from Oprah? She "endorsed" his first book "A Million Little Pieces" that was about his drug addiction and recovery. Apparently, he added a few extra's to his story telling that was suppose to be all fact.
Well , I for one enjoyed the way it was written and felt he had the right to write it anyway he wanted! It is a little sad, but also in many ways inspirational.
Happy reading everybody!!

I am in the middle of reading the 4th book in the TWILIGHT series called Breaking Dawn. This last book is definitely different and much darker from the other 3 books i think. These books are geared towards teenagers but i think the are much to dark for them or at least for the younger teen and are good books for adults who love the Vampire genre of books.

Finished "My Friend Leonard". Frey certainly has his own style! I found it very interesting, though, and almost feel as if this style of writing was very healing for him. The guy went through so much!! Anyway, after that I read a quick read; John Grisham's latest called "The Associate". It was entertaining! Now, I am on to "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" by David Wroblewski. Only about 30 pages in, but so far, so good! Rose, I have not read any of the Twilight books, but I am glad to get your review on the last one. My 15yr. old has read the first two, but if that last one is on the dark side I don't know if I want her to read it, so thanks! I have a few friends that have read those. I may have to give the first one a try one day! Happy reading!!

Bees, I read "My Friend Leonard" a few years ago, and I gotta say, I prefered it to Frey's first.
I am currently reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" which is apparently all the rage in Europe. It was given to me by a friend from Denmark who tells me that they have sold twice the number of this book in Denmark as there are Danish citizens.
It is translated from the original Swedish...a little slow going in the beginning, but understand it will pick up shortly! I'll let you know. It too is the beginning of a trilogy.

But the 4th is just like i said differant. Dont know if you know the whole story to the books. But someone becomes a vampire in the last one so it's graphic on the persons change toa vampire and there a delivery of a child too who half human/half vampire, no sex scenes but it's implyed obviously. Hope this helps. Maybe you can read the 4th one first. I dont think they are good for 13&14 year olds but an older teen shoud be fine especially if they see rated r movies..

Not sure what I will read next.....Barnes and Noble is calling!
