As I know nothing about cars (except how to drive some of them) I'll keep to the symbolizing. When hearing the commentaries it becomes clear that the BMW was a symbol for their relationship. So after David finds out that Maddie left, even after he made her see how much he cared for her, I get that he needs to do something to release his anger and frustration. So he goes on smashing the car, pretty bad. As if he wishes he could destroy it and all his feelings would immediately disappear with it. And he would forget all about their relationship. (I don't care what Maddie said, I think they had one! ) When he gets back to the office, he tells Viola to fix the car. He has given up on him and Maddie being together, and hands it over to Bert. This starts the era of Bert&Agnes being the Blue Moon lovers instead of David&Maddie. Then David enters his office, closes the door and says "So stupid..". I'm not sure what he means by that. Now I take it like he regrets lashing out on the bmw as now that he has wrecked it nothing else changed. Maddie is still in Chicago and his feelings didn't go away.

Good ideas, johanna. About the "so stupid..." line - I really hadn't thought about it, but it is curious just what he meant. I guess when I first heard it, I thought he was referring to the whole situation - Maddie leaving, etc., but he very well could have meant smashing the car. You're right - smashing the car didn't change anything in his head or heart.

i agree with johanna too . I always believed his "So Stupid " was meant that he was so stupid for what he did to the car. He felt like nothing changed by doing it. It's amazing that the shop was able to fix it like brand new huh? In the reall world it probably would have been totalled but this isn't the real world is it ?LOL Also guess Maddie never found out either . But remember in IACM, David can be very destructive. It's in his nature by what he did to his office. He totalled that too.

I was able to jump ahead a bit onto that episode (I normally watch only one a week to keep the suspense going) and watch the sequence with the commentary. That's an amazing story about the car and does answer some questions I had. I did a piece for Cindy on the car to post to the web site, but now I will have to make some adjustments to what I wrote.
I still think there may have been some other factors with the car. BMW did some tweaking to the 635 CSi about this time, primarily to the bumpers and some side trip, plus some engine and interior upgrades. It would make sense that they would want to have an up to date model being shown weekly. This is similar to how Magnum PI went from a 308 GTS to 308 GTSi to 308 Quatrovalvole as well as why Sonny Crockett's Daytona replica was blown up to make way for a current selling Testarossa.
The clarity of the DVD also let me see that the destroyed car was a 633CSi, an earlier version of the 6 Series that was mostly cosmetically identical. I'm a car guy and didn't catch that until I was able to stop frame and read the numbers on the now crushed trunk.
I still wonder what happened to the unwrecked car. The replacement was sold on EBay in 2002.

I couldn't really feel for David in this scene. It's too immature to smash a $30,000+ car. He can take his frustration out somehow else.
I already don't identify with people who destroy things when they get mad. It solves nothing. Does that mean if they were to get mad at the person directly, they'd destroy the person?
But, to smash an expensive car like that.... just ridiculous.
I feel sorry for David that things didn't go like planned with Maddie, and I understand his heart is broken, but still...

LOL!! I know what you mean Rose!!
I don't think the car he drove off in at the end of season 2 is one of these. I think that might have been a Porsche, but not sure. I think I remember reading somewhere that that was actually his own car, too.

Hey Bees! Thanks for the link. Bruce and I have similar tastes, although BeeDub can afford them!
As for why he is selling them, only Bruce can say, but many collectors turn over their cars over time, to keep things fresh. Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson and Jay Leno are two of the big names who are constantly updating their stock.
I have a 66 Corvette Convertible, a 64 1/2 Mustang and a 71 VW in my stable to cruise around in, along with my Bimmer as my daily driver, the wife's Saturn Aura and the obligatory Silverado Pickup. You see, car collecting is like Lays Potato Chips...you can't have just one!
Anyhow the car Bruce drove away in at the end of Camille was a mid year Corvette convertible. I'll have to break out the DVD to get you a year, but if memory serves, it was a black 67.

Hi graycav!!
I like old cars, but obviously know NOTHING about them. Couldn't tell you one make or model from another.........just think they are cool!
Thanks for setting us straight on the car used in "Camille".

Shame Gray's not around on here at the mo: yes it was that model and if you read his autobiography, he bought it off his Winnebago driver! ;-)

My poor, hurting David. I knew he liked to throw and kick things sometimes when he got upset, but I never expected this. I thought he would just drive a little fast and that would be it. I didn't expect him to say, "You know what? I think I'll totally crash up the bimmer!" I don't blame David for taking his feelings out on the bimmer at this point. Maddie just took off w/o saying goodbye and he had no idea where she was. I really feel for him in this episode. He's a guy who really loves his girl. And he'll go to extreme lengths to make it know just HOW much he loves his girl.

Poor David - that shot of him right at the end of the show breaks my heart

I was crying when I was watching this scene for the first time Bruce's acting is so great here! I think there is no person in the whole world who remains indifferent while watching the scene... poor David...
