The speech David makes to Mr Hayes on the plane deserves it's own thread! It's funny (in lack of a better word) that the first time he confesses how deeply he feels for Maddie is to her father. Not even when she asked him in I am Curious ("speak now or forever hold your peace") did he say anything. In a Trip to the Moon he says he's in love with her, but to me it's not really the same thing. Somewhat like he has to say it not to lose her. This feels deeper. Oh, if only David had taught her to run barefoot more often, maybe she wouldn't be so afraid of feeling. But I've never been pregnant, so I don't know how that affected her.

I had heard so much about this speech and was so looking forward to actually hearing it. Such an outstanding piece of work - wonderfully written and beautifully delivered by Bruce. The expression on his face, the tears in his eyes and the pain in his voice make this scene unforgettable.

Hi all!
I'm new to this site but not to Moonlighting. I started my tenure as a fangirl in 1985, and now owning all five seasons, my life is almost complete. But there has always been a nagging question at the base of my skull....during the speech on the plane where David says to Mr. Hayes: "Hell yes I'd marry her, I asked her she said no!". Now I've watched every show at least a million times, and I do not remember a proposal in any of them. Am I crazy? This has been driving me nuts for years.
Thanks in advance for your help on this one,
Julia

Julia ~ There is no proposal anywhere, I've searched too. I know this has been written about here and on other sites, but my take on this is either this scene (the proposal) "occurs" off camera, or maybe was in an old draft of a script for another episode and never made it to TV, and the writers either messed up by mentioning it, or again, wanted the viewers to believe that this took place off camera. What a thing to not witness, David proposing to Maddie! The stuff dreams are made of!!

Thanks honeyblondenoggin, now I can finally get some quality rest! That line bothered me more than "Let's make a pact..."
Yes, continuity was not our friend in those days.
I certainly would've swooned right off my balcony if we'd seen a proposal!!

I don't think he proposed to her off camera, I mean I bet he asked her in his mind like a million times, he knew she would have said no, with all what was going on in his life, he probably thought he did ask her to marry him .. Ok I'm just making stuff up lol, but that's how I see it ..

The speech David makes to Mr Hayes on the plane deserves it's own thread! It certainly does! While I was watching the speech, the one thing going through my mind was in the pilot....the very second he first laid eyes on Maddie...the electricity in his eyes...you could see David had come alive, and that she was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. As a man, I'm familiar with that feeling, and I can identify with it. As time went on, he just fell deeper and deeper in love with her, and throughout all they'd been through, his feelings never changed....they had just intensified! That speech was the most moving part of the entire 4th season. A man who is clearly and passionately in love. The look on Mr. Hayes' face shows that he understands. Next time you watch the pilot, pay attention to the look in Davids eyes the very second Maddie walks into the office. From that very moment, I knew that this was going to be a phenomenal show. And if you keep that moment in your mind during the speech, it's enough to give you the chills. Especially from a male point of view, because you can identify with that moment.
