I love love love when David first talks to his dad in his office. And they're both so clearly uncomfortable, what with them just standing distant from each other. David is a little boy again, completely consumed with his nervousness at seeing his dad and having completely dropped his devil-may-care persona.
David Senior says something like, "How 'bout that blonde? She could be a model or something." And David says, "She was a model, Dad."
It's such a small moment, such a small line, but I love it! I just love the simple fact that David's telling his dad something about Maddie, that David's dad is even aware of her presence in David's life. I love how soft and quiet David's voice is when he says it. I love how he says it kind of dismissively, like the fact that she was a model is not a big deal to him.
At that moment, it just strikes me how far David's feelings have come since first meeting Maddie. At first, he was so impressed by her beauty and sex appeal and the fact that she was a world-renowned model. If anyone had asked him back then, I think he would have strutted around all, "Look at me! I'm with the Blue Moon Shampoo Girl! Isn't she hot?!"
But by now, Maddie is so much more to him than just a pretty face. She's his partner, his friend, the most significant person in his life, who just happened to have been a model once upon a time. And, yes, he's still very, very attracted to her, but it's a deeper kind of attraction than the only-skin-deep one he had for her initially. He's attracted not only to her beauty, but to her fiestiness and stubbornness and elegance and vulnerability and everything else that makes Maddie who she is and drives David bat-s**t-crazy.
I think it also speaks to just how "off his game" he is around his dad. Because, as much as David's view of Maddie has changed since they met, Funny Dave would have responded to his dad's "model" comment with something like, "Yeah, she was a model, but she only did nudes - nakes have staples".
Just my two cents.
