She is rather prudish and is concerned that it is just sex for David - nothing more. She needs it to mean something and is afraid that it doesn't. lin EXACTLY!! It is so frustrating that she can't see that it does mean something to David other than the physical. ....I just wanna slap her sometimes!! ;D I would like to spank her instead...heh heh...

11. And finally...What is the DEAL with the six-minute set piece "David v. the Invisible Prowler"? Prizes will be awarded for any explanation that makes this scene plausible within the context of the episode... Let's see. While talking to Maddie in the car, David says, "This date means too much to me". Of course, the old David of previous seasons never would have admitted such a thing, but given that some strange extraterrestial being inhabited GGC's psyche while he penned this episode, we might explain the fight routine as David's desperation to convince Maddie to come out of the house. He knew that if he walked away from this date, it probably would be over. He needed an opportunity for face time with Maddie to convince her that they were more than a fling. Desperate times call for desperate measures!

10. Just for fun (and meaning no disrespect to our male colleagues): IMO, David is lookin' pretty fine in this episode. What's your favorite shot of him here? My vote goes to the half-naked shots...the bed, the towel...the whole shirtless thing. His Die Hard bulk-up sessions really paid off!

6. How do you feel about David's declaration to the staff? Honestly, I felt about as awkward as Maddie. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time we hear David actually declare his love for Maddie...a bit inappropriate and almost desperate, too little too late sort of thing. I agree since. It felt very awkward. And I think even David could not believe he had done that judging the look on his face when she leaves the office. Which, btw, didn't she just get to the office that morning!!?? ;D

Didya notice that the term "test" was uttered by both characters during this episode.
Dave referred to the test in the car...the test that he always fails, even though he doesn't want to.
Maddie says the relationship is like a test in the laundromat scene.
Looks like they both get failing grades.

I just want to know what happened BEFORE the laundromat. At the house, Maddie says it's around 9 PM or so. At the laundromat, they indicate it is around 2 AM.
What do you think went on?

Good point, gray. Are we supposed to believe that they drove around for 5 hours trying to find some place that was open? Since Maddie refused to go to a bar and also somehow convinced herself that they couldn't have dinner because it was after 9:00 on a week night and they didn't have reservations...yeah, I guess their choices were pretty limited. I imagine them bickering the whole time.

Well, it is fun to speculate, but I don't remember any indication of it being 2am. 12am would be more like it considering what time MAddie ends up in Chicago. Maybe they walked the Hollywood Walk of Fame and had ice cream.....or was that someone else....oops! ;D

7. Dr. Joyce Brothers and Ray Charles: Genius or Gimmick? I'd say a little of both. The fact that Maddie would turn to Dr. Brothers and that David would turn to Ray Charles for advice serves to underscore how very different they really are.

Part of her ending dialogue in that scene.

Whoops...sorry, I had to be away for a while. I haven't read what anybody else has said, so accept my apologies if I repeat.
4. "I feel empty inside!": Is this really how Maddie feels? Or is David right--that she just won't let herself be happy?
I think both. And I think the root of the whole problem is sex. Maddie feels that sex is all there is to their relationship, and I think, being a moral person, it bothers her that she is having sex without the fairytale. She is really pretty prudish, and I think she devalues the relationship because of that....maybe, good girls are not supposed to enjoy sex so much. Foolish woman!
She is involved in a relationship with The King of Happy...David who thinks happy solves everything. When she lets herself go, and capitulates (in the office after his confession......in the laundromat when she dances.....), you see a glimmer, but then she pulls herself up tight again. She lets him charm her, but then thinks better of it. It's so frustrating!

5. What does David mean when he says, "You won't commit!" What do you think David is looking for from the relationship at this point? Is Maddie afraid to commit to him, or is she afraid that David can't/won't commit...or does her "sadness" have nothing to do with commitment?
This exchange is so confusing. David accuses her of not being willing to commit, but then, in the Ray Charles vignette, David tosses off about committing.
I really think commitment is the wrong word in the context of their argument...and the happiness/sadness is more apropos. Although...why would sadness be the opposite of happiness in this instance. If she couldn't be happy in the relationship, wouldn't it just be a sign to move on?
This makes me nuts!

6. How do you feel about David's declaration to the staff?
Of course, it is wonderfully romantic...every woman's dream. It is just a shame that I don't think either of our folks was ready to carry through on the "happily ever after" at this point.
Interesting, isn't it, that in the commentary, Glenn apologizes for having David do that and Bruce concurs, saying that David would never have done that?
