Good evening, folks. We are about to embark into "Knowing Her", which gives us a bit of a look into David’s past.
So here go the Qs:
1. The original working title of this episode was “A Blast from the Past”, which was changed to “Knowing Her”. Any insights into why the change? Which title do you prefer?
2. Is there any significance to Gillian walking into Maddie’s office on a day that Maddie absolutely looks the worst we have ever seen her?
3. What new things if any do we find out about David from the scene in Gillian’s hotel suite?
4. When does Maddie stop being intrigued by the relationship with Gillian and start being jealous? Does she realize it?
5. When Maddie and David have their overlapping dialogue in David’s office – would it have made a difference if it had been a normal conversation, in which they actually listened to each other?
6. When Maddie says “You idiot!”….is she only speaking to David, or might part of the utterance be for her?
7. The rose…. Should he have or should he not have left it? Why didn’t he?
8. I'm projecting forward into the show’s future for this question: Gillian’s treatment of David was quite awful. Why does she not evoke the fan emotion…dare I say, hatred….that Annie does?
9. And my usual – what is your favorite quotable quote from this episode?
As far as the script goes, I know Lin has volunteered to review, so I won’t take her thunder. I will say, it is probably the closest to what aired of any scripts I have seen…but there are a few choice omissions that I am sure Lin will point out.
As always, feel free to add more questions if you’ve got ‘em. I really enjoyed taking a more in depth look at this episode, and have some observations I can’t wait to share.
Have fun!

6. When Maddie says “You idiot!”….is she only speaking to David, or might part of the utterance be for her? Maddie's utterance IMO definitely includes herself. Maddie probably felt like she has given David too much of her emotional self...he might notice she is interested in him. Or even she didn't get her point across as best she could because she didn't give enough.

8. I'm projecting forward into the show’s future for this question: Gillian’s treatment of David was quite awful. Why does she not evoke the fan emotion…dare I say, hatred….that Annie does? IMO for a few reasons... 1. David and Maddie hadn't taken that first step of admittance therefore, the climatic event was ever building. Fans were tolerant of her as the antagonist. 2. I was never in fear of Maddie really losing David to Gillian, well, she was a client and they're almost always involved in the crime. So, I knew she'd be off to jail or something like that, lol. 3. Annie is the mashoogina , she's evil and a threat to all 'essed fans hold dear, lol

7. The rose…. Should he have or should he not have left it? Why didn’t he? Absolutely he should have...it was a great gesture and a gentle build up of David and Maddie's relationship. He didn't leave it for the same reason Maddie felt like an idiot after "talking'' with David in his office...he was afraid of revealing his true feelings to Maddie.

I like the new title better. The working title would have been better if Gillian would have been a wild fling from David’s curriculum vitae, however she was in fact a very serious relationship…I gather his first since the end of his marriage. Knowing her can also have a double entendre, with David taking the biblical view against Maddie’s ability to see through her façade to “really” know the true Gillian.

4. When does Maddie stop being intrigued by the relationship with Gillian and start being jealous? Does she realize it? Humm, she seemed really annoyed that David asks her to visit Gillian's husband. I think she knew he was getting personal and there may have been more to he and Gillian's relationship than he cared to admit.

Um, didn’t think of that since most people on the show looked like they just came out of Bloomingdales. Maddie would look good in a baggy shirt….maybe MY baggy shirt……….sorry, went PG-13 there for a minute.

Gray, good close up of the angst on Maddie's face in your avatar...David circling her like shark smelling fresh blood or in her case, fresh mud, lol...priceless~

Even on Maddie's worst day, Gillian couldn't hold a candle to her...(it's hard holding 'essed fan fare inside )

What new things if any do we find out about David from the scene in Gillian’s hotel suite?
Well, he obviously likes stable relationships with women, even when they don’t work out as he wishes. He was married before, lived with Gillian and of course, would look forward to playing house with Maddie. We find that Dave actually considered “City of Angels” a JOB, which was interesting.
While this is the first episode where we really dig into Dave’s past, now taking the entire series into consideration, we can see why Maddie’s departure in Season 4 was such a kick in the pants to him. His wife bails for a census taker without warning….Gillian leaves for greener pastures without warning….Maddie heads for Chicago….without warning. Amazing he kept it together as well as he did, with only a destroyed Bimmer to show for his heartbreak.

I always thought the idiot comment in David’s office was aimed at herself, for opening up like that and not getting the desired response from him, and for her inability to express her misgivings about Gillian. The follow on at the funeral was obviously directed right at old Dave.

Evening, all. Great Qs, diane. I have the "Second Draft" of the script (not sure how many there are). Once we discuss diane's Qs, then we can take a peak at the script. Diane, feel free to jump in with the script if you like. 1. The original working title of this episode was “A Blast from the Past”, which was changed to “Knowing Her”. Any insights into why the change? Which title do you prefer? I too prefer "Knowing Her". It is more mysterious and is one of those phrases that could have several interpretations. Does it refer to the fact that David knows her from the past or does it refer to Maddie discovering what Gillian is really all about? "Blast From the Past" in a way is too simple.

Yeah, I thought it would have been a nice touch, but again, Dave is going to have his shields up with regards to women, at least for a while. He didn’t want Maddie to have this 15-love advantage in the Blue Moon Invitational.

Gotta agree with Since here.
Gillian comes in relatively early in the series. While we are feeling the increasing heat between Dave and Maddie, we just aren’t certain where it is going to go. Gillian’s entrance was as a client, although we know that she was setting Dave up all the time.
Annie was interfering in an existing relationship, although a strained one. Annie was not just delaying the inevitable boinking, she was potentially ending its recurrence for all time. Thus she earns the full strength wrath of the forum,
