1. The original working title of this episode was “A Blast from the Past”, which was changed to “Knowing Her”. Any insights into why the change? Which title do you prefer?
"Knowing Her" is the best of the two. You can twist and turn its meaning. Maddie knowing Gillian better than David because she is looking at the situation from outside the relationship of G and D David not knowing Gillian while he was with her, thinking he knows her when she comes back and explains herself. David not really knowing how Maddie feels, for sure anyway.
The "Her" is both Maddie and Gillian.

2. Is there any significance to Gillian walking into Maddie’s office on a day that Maddie absolutely looks the worst we have ever seen her?
I agree with everyone....MAddie looks good in mud!!
I think it was terrific writing and Cybill was a great sport!!
As far as significance to Gillian walking in on this day I suppose it could have something to do with that men helping women discussion. David ends up wanting to help Gillian.....and he did help Maddie---he bought her some pany hose!!
But, it does make Gillian look a little better. I say better, but I don't think she looks better than Maddie in mud!! LOL!!

What new things if any do we find out about David from the scene in Gillian’s hotel suite?Well, he obviously likes stable relationships with women, even when they don’t work out as he wishes. He was married before, lived with Gillian and of course, would look forward to playing house with Maddie. We find that Dave actually considered “City of Angels” a JOB, which was interesting. While this is the first episode where we really dig into Dave’s past, now taking the entire series into consideration, we can see why Maddie’s departure in Season 4 was such a kick in the pants to him. His wife bails for a census taker without warning….Gillian leaves for greener pastures without warning….Maddie heads for Chicago….without warning. Amazing he kept it together as well as he did, with only a destroyed Bimmer to show for his heartbreak. Ditto!! When one tries to see what makes David tick all one has to do is look at all of his relationships. And I would include his father, Richie, and quite possibly his mother, though we do not learn much of anything about her. Oh, and add Terri AND Annie in there if you cheat and look ahead to future episodes.

Gray, I can post David's side of the dialog, if you like. That would be sweet of you.

4. When does Maddie stop being intrigued by the relationship with Gillian and start being jealous? Does she realize it?
I think it was at the hospital where David accuses her of being jealous. He picks up on it and seems to enjoy it.
Although Maddie watching them embrace at the police station does invoke a cringing squirm....I do the same thing every time I watch it!! I think she probably realizes it then, but becomes more concerned about David's association with Gillian and his welfare. She just has that "feeling" about her. ....and she is right!

OK, kids, let's look at some of the script differences. The major scene left out of the final version occurs in Act Three, but I wanted to comment on some others starting from the beginning. First, I'd like to mention one of the stage directions that occurs early on. When Maddie bursts into the office, filthy and disheveled, and Agnes greets her, "Morning, Miss Hayes":
"ON MADDIE
...and she looks at DiPesto...and growls...and then...without a word...CLIP-CLOPS, hurriedly through the reception area and toward her own office...exuding equal parts anger...embarrassment...and pride..."
As I watched that scene and read those directions, I enjoyed how Cybill conveyed all those emotions so beautifully. Great job.
As diane mentioned, the dialog in the script is very close to the filmed version. There are occasional lines that were omitted. I'll mention just a few of them. One that I think is pretty funny occurs when Maddie is pushing David out of her office and says, "Leave. Go, I want to be by myself. Now." The next line is: DAVID: (looking down at her hose; starting off; over his shoulder) "You're very attractive at half mast."
Another omission occurs after Gillian leaves the office and David is explaining the nature of their relationship:
"DAVID: Well, stayed in mostly.
MADDIE: You lived together?
DAVID: No. (and then) Not really. (and then) I just didn't have a place of my own at the time. (and then; turning; going for the door) But really...it was no big deal."
When David is standing in the doorway of Gillian's hotel room, after the "I never saw it coming...caught me right in the gut...No...wait...a little higher" line:
"ANOTHER ANGLE ...as the two of them stand there in the open doorway Gillian looking uncomfortable...David looking at her...
GILLIAN: I suppose I had that coming... DAVID: Nahh, go easy on yourself. My fault entirely. I'm the one who's supposed to be going through life with my eyes wide open, and wouldn't you know it, the one time I don't look up, a piano falls on me. GILLIAN: I know I owe you an explanation... DAVID: With interest... GILLIAN: ...but I don't think that you're ready to listen. DAVID: Me? Not ready? Never been readier. (cups his ear) Three years to come up with a winner...don't disappoint. GILLIAN: You're being an ass.
...she starts to close the door...but David sticks his hand up...stopping it... DAVID: Another quick exit? ON GILLIAN ...stung...and after a moment she backs off on the door... ON DAVID
...he's not going to force his way in...
DAVID: Five minutes, that's all..."
Then the dialog continues much as we see it.
The next interesting piece is from the balcony scene:
"ON DAVID'S HAND ...catching her hand as...
FROM ABOVE ...the railing falls five stories...crashing to the sidewalk...as... GILLIAN ...wraps both arms around him...and he pulls her... DAVID: Hold tight. ...back up onto the railingless ledge... ANOTHER ANGLE ...as he pulls her beside him... DAVID: It's okay...I've got you now... ...and the two of them lie there on the ledge...breathing hard...David holding the shaking Gillian...the two of them holding each other... ON GILLIAN ...looking at David...and... DAVID ...looking back at Gillian...as... THE TWO OF THEM ...stare at each other...holding each other...neither one about to let go...and then...they fall back into a hug...and then... ON DAVID ...as Gillian buries her head in his shoulder...and he stares ino the night...the flame still there..as we... CUT TO BLACK"
That's ACT ONE. It's getting pretty late, so I am going to jump off now. More scenes tomorrow. Gray, I will post David's side of the overlapping dialog too.

5. When Maddie and David have their overlapping dialogue in David’s office – would it have made a difference if it had been a normal conversation, in which they actually listened to each other?
If they had had more normal conversations it would not have been normal for Moonlighting!! ;D
But, yes, I think it would have pushed their relationship along. Where as we are trying so hard to listen to what they are both saying and that whole scene makes the viewer want to scream at the tv and tell David to SHUT UP!! ;D If he had listened to Maddie he would have left the rose at the end.....

6. When Maddie says “You idiot!”….is she only speaking to David, or might part of the utterance be for her?
I have always thought Maddie was calling herself an idiot because she felt like she put herself out there, but did not make herself clear. With David's response being sort of like he had the upperhand in whatever it was between them. God forbid he would be one up on her!! ;D And it's that ol' don't reveal too much of yourself before he does thingy....

"Stop reasoning with your underwear" ;D

Well, dang. You show up late, all the good answers are taken! Just kiddin'...Diane, thanks for the great questions, and lin, thanks for the script outtakes--that balcony scene is a humdinger! The original working title of this episode was “A Blast from the Past”, which was changed to “Knowing Her”. Any insights into why the change? Which title do you prefer?I like the new title better. The working title would have been better if Gillian would have been a wild fling from David’s curriculum vitae, however she was in fact a very serious relationship…I gather his first since the end of his marriage. Knowing her can also have a double entendre, with David taking the biblical view against Maddie’s ability to see through her façade to “really” know the true Gillian. Good one, gray. I also agree with bees that the title refers to the fact that David is getting to know Maddie as well...and by the end of this ep, I think he's come to appreciate her independence, perserverance, and honesty even more, when contrasted with Gillian's manipulation and gold-digging (um, not to mention the murder thing ).

8. I'm projecting forward into the show’s future for this question: Gillian’s treatment of David was quite awful. Why does she not evoke the fan emotion…dare I say, hatred….that Annie does?
Agree with those that have said that it is early in Maddie and David's relationship. We have not been exposed to the future heartache.
However, when David kisses Gillian at the park, who feels like throwing stuff at the tv??!! ;D

You know it, bees! Though, I think it's probably a good thing Maddie's not listening to David (at least, I don't think she hears him) when he says he's taking off with the grieving (!) widow...or maybe she does hear him, and that's why she castigates herself at the end of the scene.

The part that gets me the most in this scene is his smile--do we ever see him smile like that for Maddie??? (I'm sure we must--please, somebody, remind me when!!) So open, not hiding anything (pretty darn ironic, considering what Gillian is hiding). I have to think if he had smiled at Maddie like that more often, she would've folded like the proverbial house of cards--I know I would!

I have a question: I don't mean to sound hopelessly naive, but are we supposed to believe that Gillian set the whole scenario up, before she even walked into Blue Moon? Or do you think she started scheming once she saw David??
And re that scene: I don't know how Bruce did it, but I swear he managed to look 10 years older in that instant David sees Gillian. Amazing.
