This is really one of the better episodes for revealing a little bit more of David's character. He struggles with not recognizing others true feelings or intentions and wears his heart right out there on his sleeve.
But, this also reveals a small part of Maddie's heart as she shows genuine concern for David's relationship with Gillian while also being jealous.
The moment for me in this episode though is right after the overlapping dialog when David asks Maddie how she's doing. The look he gives her after she says "I hope you don't hate me" It's like he is reminded that they do have something going on between them, just what that is he is not sure. Meanwhile, he thinks someone needs him....and everyone likes to feel needed.

4. Maddie's jealousy: I agree that she starts to be jealous when David asks her to see Mr. Gillian; actually, I think the precise moment is when he says, "C'mon, Maddie...", but I don't think she realizes it, until, as gray said, she sees the embrace at the police station. The hope in Maddie's voice when she tells David, "At least the case is over"--and then her look when she realizes that the whole situation is far from over...she turns to go, but then looks back again, almost against her will...yep, there you go.

I have a question: I don't mean to sound hopelessly naive, but are we supposed to believe that Gillian set the whole scenario up, before she even walked into Blue Moon? Or do you think she started scheming once she saw David?? And re that scene: I don't know how Bruce did it, but I swear he managed to look 10 years older in that instant David sees Gillian. Amazing. Yes, I know!! He comes in smiling with pantyhose for Maddie and then his whole face and demeanor changes so quickly!! How does he do that!!?? I do think we are to believe that Gillian set the whole thing up. She knew David was at Blue Moon, the same office as city of Angels. She is an evil woman....very, very evil, LOL!!

My favorite quote is Maddie's response to David's admission that he "ran into" Gillian in her hotel room: "Talk about the hand of fate..."
Not so much because of its "quotability," but the way Cybill delivers it is classic--just that little tinge of dry sarcasm...very Kate Hepburn, to me.

OK, gray. I am getting this out bright and early as an anniversary present to you and the Mrs. Here is David's side of the overlapping dialog:
"Y'know...my head just about hit the pillow last night and I realized that I never did call you yesterday. And I was going to call you last night...but it was night...y'know? So what would I have told you...that I didn't make it in? Figured you already knew that. Anyway...I am sorry I didn't call...I'm not going to be in very long today either. Funeral. Harlan's. Which brings me to another thing. Gillian wants to get away. Out of here...y'know? I guess they...she...owns some land up North. Anyway...me being an old friend and all...her being by herself...If I wouldn't hang you up around here...And I don't know how it could...since as you're always reminding me...nothing much ever happens around here...Anyway...I think I'm going to go with her..."
There it is. Catch up more later.

9. And my usual – what is your favorite quotable quote from this episode? "A knat with a lobotomy could fool you" ;D "Stop reasoning with your underwear" ;D I think BOTH of these have been used AGAINST me from time to time.

And re that scene: I don't know how Bruce did it, but I swear he managed to look 10 years older in that instant David sees Gillian. Amazing. I was thinking the same thing. In the span of what, two minutes, Bruce goes from looking like a college frat boy to....Fred Flintstone! Tremendous acting. And absolutely 100% believable.

OK, gray. I am getting this out bright and early as an anniversary present to you and the Mrs. Here is David's side of the overlapping dialog: You are a lifesaver. This clears up a lot of confusion on my part. I don't recall any other scenes with overlapping dialogue where I had so much problem following along. I don't know if this was deliberate on the part of the director or not. This paints Dave in a much more negative light than I thought. I didn't realize that they were going somewhere with actual infrastructure (the place up north)...I had thought they were just going away for a few days. This is much more diabolical. What IF Dave would have gone. The woman already killed one dude to get his cash.....would Dave be far behind? And I don't get the comments about Dave thinking he is expendible. Sure, the agency isn't in the black yet, but the business IS improving and he knows that he is a key to that success. Him trying to justify his vacation with this Claudine Longet copycat by blaming it on Maddie's lack of appreciation for him is just, well, wrong. The dialogue now lets me better understand why Maddie took such strong measures to "save" Dave. Thanks Lin. Your one post has answered questions I have had lingering for almost 25 years! What a forum!

Thanks diane for the great questions, and everyone for the interesting opinions, and Lin for the script! I usually consume all my time in reading every post, and enjoying! But this time I'd like to try.
1. The original working title of this episode was gA Blast from the Pasth, which was changed to gKnowing Herh. Any insights into why the change? Which title do you prefer?
I absolutely prefer the title "Knowing Her". Not just Davidfs old flame appears but gWhat things does he know about her?h And I think the latter is better to the point of the episode.
3. What new things if any do we find out about David from the scene in Gillianfs hotel suite?
The first time I watched this episode, in fact I was truly surprised to see that David directly expressed his hard feelings toward Gillian. He rarely behaves like this to any women in the world, but he sometimes does to Maddie. I think he really loved her 3 years ago and then awfully got hurt by her leaving. And next, all along the episode, again I truly surprised to see how easily David got back to her despite the fact he was betrayed by her. It puzzled me for a while. And I like to think this way: Davidfs nature is very warm and loving to the people he loves and loved, so that he just canft leave the people who are in trouble. I suppose Gillian well knows that and set a trap for David.

4. When does Maddie stop being intrigued by the relationship with Gillian and start being jealous? Does she realize it? 5. When Maddie and David have their overlapping dialogue in David’s office Ewould it have made a difference if it had been a normal conversation, in which they actually listened to each other?
I agree it is when David asks her to meet Mr. Armstrong. The clue is Maddie’s line: “My goodness, I've never seen you like this beforeE I think she doesn’t realize she is jealous. But after David pointed it out, I guess she starts to think of it. But she saves herself from being jealous, I think. She tries to think about him and Gillian calmly, rationally and considerately. I love Maddie’s speech at David’s office. Too bad David is full of himself then and doesn’t hear Maddie. I really hope if he ever gets a chance to hear her when she speaks from her tender heart. He always misses them! I couldn’t catch the words from David. And it is that he is going on vacation with Gillian, I’m really thankful with the fact that Maddie doesn’t listen to him! It must be too tough for her.
6. When Maddie says “You idiot!”….is she only speaking to David, or might part of the utterance be for her?
I thought she was speaking to David, but I now think she is disappointed by no reaction from him. So she must be calling herself too “an idiot. However David wrote “I’m an idiot on the paper with the rose, he doesn’t leave them though. So my mind reels...thinking if he could hear “You idiot!" or not.

7. The roseE Should he have or should he not have left it? Why didn't he?
I've always thought she deserves that rose in this episode. And if David listened to her speech in his office, he would surely feel happier. But he has realized he was cheated by the same woman, twice. I suppose his wound is serious than his facade. He just can't believe any women now. So he didn't, I think.
8. I'm projecting forward into the show's future for this question: Gillian's treatment of David was quite awful. Why does she not evoke the fan emotionEare I say, hatredEthat Annie does?
I agree with everyone's opinion. Annie takes away all the hope we have had for a long time.....David and Maddie should realize how much they love each other at least in the last episode of the series.
9. And my usual Ewhat is your favorite quotable quote from this episode?
Sorry, I'm not good at quotable quote. Instead, I'd like to write about my favorite scenes. I mostly love the banters in the beginning and in the hearse. They are so hilarious. In the beginning, the music is great, David happily making fun of Maddie is funny, and I like Maddie keeps her dignity, beauty even in mud. And in the hearse I think such a screwball comedy is one of the presents from Moonlighting!

You are welcome, gray. I think once you know what he is saying, you can actually hear it better when watching the scene, if you know what I mean.
