3. In the argument in her office, David and Maddie have the following exchange:
David: The fact that the way I choose to be differs from the way you choose to be does not give you any right to get on your morally superior high horse!
Maddie: Well, that’s kinda nice for the irresponsible team, isn’t it? You count on the rest of us to cover for you, so you’ll be free to do whatever you please!
Do you think we are supposed to agree with one character or the other? Do their positions alter during the course of the episode?
Well, I do agree with Maddie. I think we are suppose to in this instance. It sets up the whole revelation of David having been married before and actually showing a responsible side to him. I don't think their positions change necessarily, but David does "slow down" over the course of the series and Maddie occasionally shows signs of irresponsibility, i.e., running off to Chicago, Walter,....and you might could even throw in the absence of birth control during their first few nights together.

4. This question relates to the dream/dance sequence. At this point, Maddie does not know the details of David's relationship with his ex-wife, yet in her dream, she imagines the ex as the “bad guy.” It's interesting that she doesn't blame David for the break-up. What does this tell us about Maddie's opinion of David? She KNOWS what is in his heart.....they have had enough conversations for her to know that even though David may try to smoke screen his true feelings about certain things, he is very traditional when it comes to marriage and love. Like someone else said, he never really did anything to make Maddie think otherwise....until Annie.

5. What does the scene in the bar reveal about David and his past? *A note here: “Top Cat” was a Hanna-Barbera cartoon from the early 60’s; Top Cat (or T.C.) was the leader of a band of alley cats. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Cat)
I believe the bar scene reveals that his marriage to Tess falling apart hurt David more than he let anyone know. It hurt so bad that he left NY to live on the opposite side of the country!! And I get the feeling that he has not seen his buddies in 9 years, just like his ex-brother-in-law. It was too painful and he just wanted to forget about it.
Is this consistent with the portrait David paints later on?
I need more clarification....or maybe another cup of coffee!! LOL! Later in this episode or later on in the series?
BTW, I watched Top Cat with my brothers all the time when we were growing up!! ;D

6. David leaves his buddies to call Maddie, to check in with her. What does his one-sided “conversation” tell us?
It tells us he is thinking about how he told her he had been married before and then just took off!! And he is worried about what she may be thinking. They had an argument about responsibility before he left, remember? He thinks he is looking REALLY irresponsible about now!! ....and then she doesn't answer the phone!! Not like Maddie to be out late by herself. I LOVE how he shows concern for her safety late at night, but also he is very curious.......nah, no way she is out on a date.....

7. I have transcribed Maddie’s speech in the hotel room; it will be in the following post if you want to go over it. What do you think Maddie is hoping for here? Do you think she ends up saying more than she has intended?
I think Maddie was driven to fly to NY by 1 part jealousy and 2 parts curiosity. And I think she probably thought about what she was going to say to David, but then just started rambling because of his silence. She was obviously very uncomfortable and just started spilling out what she was really thinking, yes, more than she intended to say! And I really think she thought she knew everything about David and maybe a little hurt that he never told her about Tess. So she covers this up by saying she has a few little pockets of info about her life as well that he does not know!
But, what I really get out of the whole scene is that Maddie is sincere in wanting to be supportive of David and the situation. He has been there for her....EDFIAV comes to mind.....she wants to help him through what she believes could be difficult for him and her dream spurred her on to do so.

8. Silence is so crucial in this episode; in fact, what is NOT said is at least as important as what is said. David says nothing throughout Maddie’s speech; Maddie is quiet while David tells her about Tess. However, in both cases, their facial expressions and reactions seem to speak volumes. Two questions come to mind: a) What does the silent partner seem to be thinking, in each case? b) What is the effect on Maddie of David’s silence, and vice versa?
A) While David is silent his mind is reeling 200mph.....why did you really come here?....you do have certain feelings for me....this is the last thing I expected.....should I just grab you and kiss you now?.....no, better not.....honey, I know everything and more about you than you realize...why did you come all the way to NY?
Maddie's silence is true concern for him. His reaction to him finding her in his room showed her that there has to be more to the marriage than just irreconcilable differences and she could smell the beer and see the buzzy look in his eyes. What David does when he seeks comfort, though also when he seeks fun!!
B) David's silence completely throws Maddie and makes her very uncomfortable and little embarrassed. She used to the yelling and bantering from this guy, not complete silence. And I must say as I have said many times, Bruce is SO GOOD at this!!
Maddie's silence shows David another little piece of her heart....she wants to know what happened and she really cares, which allows him to bare a little bit of his soul.

9. David’s telling Maddie about Tess is a big deal. Why do you think that he couldn’t tell Maddie the whole truth?
Just another little window to Dave's insecurities....of course, this certainly did not help!! I don't blame the guy at all. I think we can look back at the time period. This happened 9 yrs. earlier in the 70's. This type of situation was not talked about at all! In the 80's, sexual preference topics started emerging "out of the closets" of America. David not including this info was just an ego and pride thing. I can understand his leaving that info out!! Especially with Maddie! His friends surely know, which is why he left for the west coast after it all happened. No reason for him to tell anyone at Blue Moon.

10. David and Maddie each experience an unplanned pregnancy. What do their respective reactions reveal about their characters?
One of the things that makes this show so great is that our heroes will react or do something that on the outside would seem out of character. It brings to mind the whole religion topic...David's beliefs in a supreme being and Maddie being an atheist or just unsure.
David once again is shown that he can be the type of man that Maddie would want to be with or even marry and have kids.
Not sure I can blame Maddie's reaction to her own pregnancy completely on her as I have a hard time separating the issue from the writer's choices at this point! But, I will say that even though Maddie fled to Chicago before she knew she was pregnant, she did try to face the dilemma while there....going to the Dr., taking care of herself physically, though emotionally she was a wreck. Aand yes, she freaked on the train and married Walter!!

11. In the hotel argument, Maddie shouts, “I was looking forward to this funeral!” What do you think were her expectations? What is at stake for David in going alone vs. taking her? After thinking about this, I am not so sure that Maddie was hell bent on going to the funeral until David told her what happened. The next morning, she was just so curious to see this woman who broke David's heart! She never dreamed that David would be adamant about her not going. David chooses to appear unable to sustain a relationship with a woman than for Maddie to go and find out what really happened. And David wants the option of being a no show if he can't go through with it. This only spurs MAddie more, as she has time to really think about WHY David did not want her to go with him. Pretty gutsy of her to go to the after get together anyway, no?! But, I think the last straw was when she makes the call and the other line says "Addison's residents". Hmmm.....why did she keep Dave's last name after all of this time......

12. Maddie chooses not to confront David about Tess in the scene in the airplane. Does this mark a change in Maddie?
I think it just shows that she cares about David so much that this is one time that she is going to let that "pocket of information" stay put. She has had time to contemplate, think and analyze...like Maddie does 95% of the time.
What purpose would it serve to bring it up?
Although, this part of David's life certainly did things to him to further shape his character. Suddenly it is not just Maddie who is so complex!!

Bees, this definitely adds more to the thought process for her showing up at the repass...I always wondered about "the Addison residence" response...your answer brings clarity for me...good call! And yes, it was real gutsy for her to show up...almost like she was prepared for battle (Maddie was clean, baby, sharp!) Did anyone else notice that Tess has blue eyes and blond hair as well? When Maddie saw her... I love how she shoots small, intimidating glares subtly towards Tess...so natural...like "Oh, so you're the b****"

Well, it's imperative to this particular episode because it is the basic dynamic of David's irresponsible behavior and Maddie's concern for his "adult attitude". Maddie is surprised to hear David had been married because she feels that marriage is an adult thing to do; it totally contradicts her impression of David's sense of responsibility from earlier that day. This also lends to the bar scene with his buddies at the wake for Jimmy...showing the pattern of David's familiarity with bar surroundings...his comfort with that atmosphere. David's "over served" state is a prequel of roots that are later revealed in the scene with his buddies. Whoa! This is what I LOVE about this board. I NEVER thought of these scenes as they relate to the overall story. BRAVO Since! You have opened my eyes once again! Oh Gray, you made me blush...

David and Maddie traveling uncharted territory reveals subconsciously, they bring out the uncommon facets of each others personality. David and Maddie have a desire to be there for each other, a desire to be with each other. Although they can't admit it, not even to themselves, they're like magnets...forever clinging to the other. The desire to remedy each others issues, to show support to one another shows me their relationship is severely underestimated in their own eyes...yet we all can see it! Albeit, they don't own up to being a couple, David and Maddie present themselves as such through their constant companionship outside of the office. Great answer SINCE! I think with each episode the storyline takes us another step furthering M/D personal relationship oustside the office. They move forward by their cases alot of the times where the stories of their clients seem to almost always hit home in some way but when it's an episode that revolves around D or M personal life they take the biggest steps forward in furthering their relationship i think and grow closer to each other each time.Yeah Rose, like the stuff their avoiding gets brought out in relation to their cases...but when Maddie and David are in situations where they feel threatened with losing the other, they step up...art definitely imitates life! PS...thanks for the kudos Babe!

Was it just me, or during the big dance number, when Dave married the HOT Tess, did he put the ring on the WRONG finger?
