Gorky says: Point is: David's line, in the FKL script, about Maddie being in control could refer to being in control of the situation with the baby and David; but it could also be a reference to the fact that Maddie isn't able to control herself, emotionally, around David. After IAC...M, I'm sure Maddie did give herself to the relationship; I believe she gave all of her heart to it. But this passion--this inability to keep her emotions reigned in--also scared her. David loosened Maddie's tight grip on her emotions, and like hell he'd want to give that control back to her--after all, he always wanted her to just feel, not think.
This is absolutely spot on, Gorky. I think the depth of the emotion that Maddie felt for David scared the living daylights out of her. She is so used to having calm and order in her life, and then, welcome aboard, Mr. Chaos.
Her fears are very real to her...but if she used that orderly brain to analyze their relationship, and see what was RIGHT, she would realize all the wonderful things that happened to her, and how she had grown since meeting David. Instead, she keeps finding reasons why they WON'T work, and why he is not the right person for her.
Don't get me wrong...this conflict is what made the show work, and I am not sure it could have been avoided. But we are analyzing here, right?
Does anybody think some of the conflict was caused by male writers versus female ones, and their personal experiences with the opposite sex?
PS.....I almost forgot. This script actually has some of the greatest comments on stage direction...so descriptive and such a hoot! I have run out of time, but I will try and post some examples tonight!

Just chiming in on the second version here. I agree with some other posters that this was NOT the time for our favorite Dramedy to lean to the "medy" side. Yes, there were a few decent lines and gags in version 2, but I think they made the appropriate choice to stay heavy with these scenes.
I mean, would you have remembered Cassablanca if Ilsa would have stayed with Rick? Would it have been such a classic if Rhett would have said "Frankly, Scarlet, you have a point there?" Would it have had such an impact if Charles Foster Kane had uttered "OUCH!" instead of "Rosebud"? I think not!
The prosecution rests your honor.

Boy, wouldn't it be great to get one of the writers to join us on one of our forays into the past one of these Tuesday nights? I mean, if I were a writer and found people still interested in my work 20-25 years in the future, I'd be honored to participate. Anybody have any contacts???

She is a smart lady and it will forever bug me that they (the writers) never let her completely figure it all out!! There were a few times that you could tell they were leaning that way but they did not stick with the idea that Maddie could actually reveal her heart to us and to David without backpedaling afterward. Very frustrating.... Yes Gray, it would fabulous to have a writer join us wouldn't it? Diane, thanks for sharing!

David accuses Maddie, saying that she "never gave (herself) to this thing"; she then tells him, "If I gave any more of myself to this thing, I'd be inside-out." Point is: David's line, in the FKL script, about Maddie being in control could refer to being in control of the situation with the baby and David; but it could also be a reference to the fact that Maddie isn't able to control herself, emotionally, around David. Gorky, I would say that this makes so much sense that the hour you were in had to be godly! This is so true and so poignant to the discussion; particularly IMO, the emphasized line quoted. FKL is definitely about "who's in control here". And the funny part is Maddie and David are not attempting to control one another; their simply attempting to control themselves. There is a song by a woman name Angela Bofill and it's called "Tonight I Give In". The songs lyrics remind me of this control that should be relinquished, not to each other but to the "force" that Diane spoke about in another post. A part of the song goes... Somebody walked into my life, and he's right on time Somebody looked into my heart and he read my mind And it's you, I waited O so long to say it's you You're everything, I've ever dreamed Tonight I give in to the feeling Tonight I give in to the thrill of loving you Tonight I give in to believing You're everything, I've ever dreamed, please come to me David and Maddie are both feeling this internally. Yes David has said great things, but he should have said those things to Maddie, not Mr. Hayes. Therefore, to add, Mr. Hayes brought up a valid point regarding "who's running from who?" It's easy to be elusive to others, we do it all the time in actual life. Yet we can't hide from ourselves, as Teddy P says "everywhere you go, there you are!"

I am feeling that "mediocre minds" thing.
Again, I am really not trying to be self promoting, just showing how we all are kindred spirits.
I used this song in the VM season finale of season 6. Isn't it perfect?

Bees, I am revitalized by this new discovery. It's funny because I put ML so far away from me because it was too painful...I continually followed Cybill and Bruce's careers with a passion but ML just hurt too much. Until I found this place I felt really alone in my passion for it. The picture I posted had been buried for many, many years...now it sits on my mantle so I can look at it everyday! Thanks Guys, I don't feel so crazy anymore, lol!
