What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play. Life is a Cabaret, old chum, Come to the Cabaret! Here are the questions for tonight's episode! Feel free to add whatever comments or questions anytime you wish! I'm posting 'em early for our very special friend graycav ! See you later, buddy! Oh, and jpen : many thanks for your precious feedback, dear! So without further ado, let's get started! 1. In this episode Maddie has to confront the concepts of death and mortality. Judging by her statements, what are Maddie's priorities in life? 2. How does Maddie relate with the concept of death? 3. I took the liberty to analyze the nightmare sequence frame per frame... I hope you won't mind! ;D Here's the link (hope this works for you!): www.fileupyours.com/view/227944/NIGHTMARE%20ANALYSIS.docIn the light of that little essay about dream symbolism, what's your interpretation of Maddie's nightmare? In particular: why is David the Grim Reaper? 4. Maddie is a rational, yet superstitious lady. How do you explain her ambivalence? 5. The title of this episode is a paraphrase of a child's taunt, "I See England, I See France, I See (name's) Underpants." 'Netherworld' suggests something vaguely similar - 'nether regions' means roughly the part of the body, front and back, covered by underpants; though netherworld itself actually means hell or the underworld. So it's quite a clever-sounding title! The question is: Is someone taunting Maddie here? If so, why and in what way? (our dear jpen helped me with this one: thank you, sweetie! ) 6. Bonus question: What do you think David's last wishes were? 7. Playtime! Phew! This is a little research I did. You don't need to read it now, though. If you wish, you can take a peek at it later... www.fileupyours.com/view/227944/ML%20and%20Alfred%20Hitchcock.doc So, did reading the questions (and viewing the analysis of the nightmare) give you the heebie-jeebies? Yes? OK, don't panic. Just fast forward to the shower scene! ;D And have FUN!

I got curious, so I started to investigate...Until I found an answer to my questions! ;D I think I'm going to write a full essay one of these days! ;D

Meaning of Maddie’s Nightmare: MAddie, as we all know, has developed an intense passion for David that often times requires courage for her to accept. This and the fact that she is on the verge of actually making a very different decision or commitment about her own spiritual beliefs than she has expressed before has her panicked in her nightmare. Being buried alive is an unbelievers worst nightmare. “I don’t want to know what this feels like", she says I think as they are buried chin deep in Harry's spot!
This is a huge revelation for her because as she starts believing that there is a Supreme being and that there may actually be life after death----or “permanent sleep away camp”---as David calls it, she sees just how much David has influenced her own life. These feelings are nothing knew for Maddie, as all of her feelings for David have always terrified her in some sense. Especially the thought of some of him rubbing off on her!! A part of her really wants to live on the wild side a little, like David. This is why I think he appears as the Grim Reaper.
What stands out for me the most about her dream is that in the midst of her panic where does she run? To Blue Moon and to David!! She runs off the elevator and thinks she has found safety. She hopes to see the ever faithful Agnes in the office to make all the bad go away with one of her cute little quips, but even she is not the same---ha!! Interesting that ibm’s analysis of heads in dreams symbolizes wisdom! Agnes was the smartest out of all of them!!
All of this to say that Maddie’s dream is trying to tell her that her life as it is should change…….she simply needs to allow it. Her relationship with David is salvageable if she wishes. It is ok to WANT to work hard and achieve great success with her business. I think that is why we see her in her office without all of the darkness. It is how she sees that she HAS been successful. When Harry shows up though, it again reveals her fear of trying to think in new ways and to open her mind to different opinions----especially David’s!! But, it IS wrong for employees to make 976 calls on company phones…..David knows that, too!!
And just when she thinks all is at its darkest who does she see as she closes her eyes and who does she see when she opens them?
Wake up Maddie----he does love you!
Question: does anyone know off hand who wrote this one? ANd did they put this much thought into the dream?

Question: does anyone know off hand who wrote this one? ANd did they put this much thought into the dream? This episode was written by Chris Ruppenthal. He's quite famous. He wrote several episodes for the tv show "The X-Files", for "Quantum Leap" and "The Outer Limits", so I think he's rather knowledgeable in matter of Paranormal and other spooky stuff... Hey, what's up, kiddies? You're so silent tonight...

Maddie is a rational, yet superstitious lady. How do you explain her ambivalence?
It is just as David says to her as they are discussing the fact that she wanted to replace her chair. She cant admit to a little irrational thinking.
She is afraid to keep the chair that Harry died in because she thinks it will bring her bad luck. David, always the optimistic, thinks her odds are better to keep the chair. LOL!!

Where is everybody tonight? ? Oh well, I'm having fun! David’s last wishes: I David, being of sound mind and body, hereby leave all of my worldly possessions to Richie, my brother, as I know Madolyn Hayes will not want any of my stuff. And since my mind AND body are sound I do hereby request that, before I am returned to this earth, Ms. Hayes re-enact the shower scene with extra soap. Clothing not needed and panty hose optional. I so would like to know what they really put on that paper…….

Is someone taunting Maddie here? If so, why and in what way? I think in order to answer this you have to look at the conversation David and Maddie have in Maddie's office right after she gets a new chair. Listen to David's part of there semi-bantering! He calls her hand again on the whole issue she has of not wanting to confront her own mortality. He even calls her "an uptight overachiever" who can't seem to "admit to a little irrational thinking". Wow, the 2nd or 3rd season Maddie would have imploded with that statement!!LOL! She either ignores him or knows he is right to some extent, but changes the subject, I believe, thanks to Agnes knocking on the door. So in this sense, I do believe MAddie is being taunted and it is by the same person that has always done the taunting.......and he ain't dead!

Guys, I just don't understand... Are you shocked? You didn't expect such a thorough analysis? Maybe it's high time to re-evaluate this episode...Don't you think? It's not silly at all, is it?

Guys, I just don't understand... Are you shocked? You didn't expect such a thorough analysis? IBM, I think this is one of those episodes that you either like to dig deep into or just like to watch for the laughs. There is a lot of really funny stuff in this one and can be appreciated just for that reason. I always thought the dream meant something to Maddie, but I have NEVER thought this "deep" about its meaning. Your research is great as are your questions. .....I personally would Ike to know what others think was on David's last naughty wish list...... ;D

Dig deep into or switch off our computers and go to sleep? You choose. I'm not answering the questions because I'm the questioneer, and the rule says I should step aside. You choose. Let me know your take. I'll be here.

OK! Mull it over! Anyway, there's one thing I ought to remark:the dream analysis is Science. It is NOT my opinion. I'm quite familiar with the subject, since I used to watch "The X-Files" in my teen years. But I can understand your perplexity. OK then, if you ain't got anything to say at the moment, or if you're just busy...Good night!
