I am not sure that I am going to express this well, but I am not sure that before David, Maddie realized she was lonely. I think when David goes through the scenario of "in bed alone by nine o'clock", she shrugs it off, but it takes Paul McCain to make her realize that she is lonely. I think that's why she identifies so throughly with Paul's stories......she starts to look at herself, and admits that she needs more in her life. I think this episode begins to help Maddie open up.
I watched the episode with the script in hand, and there are a few things they left out. One is an exchange between David and Maddie once they have met Laura Boyd. After the meeting, Maddie seems distracted and asks David whether he thinks Laura is pretty.....then realizes what she has done and dismisses him when he tries to answer......."Never mind".
Regarding the fireplace and McCain.....I really don't see an attraction there at all. maybe before they met, as witnessed by the deleted scene above., but I think once Maddie meets him, she realizes that the man is not as good as the voice on the radio, as Laura said.
And is Cybill not gorgeous in this episode.........even and maybe even especially after she is rained on?

lin, bees, and diane--totally agree with you that there was NO chemistry in the scene with McCain. Maddie definitely looks more infatuated in the scene with Laura, before she's actually met him (and Laura's comment about being so wonderful on the radio is great). I really thought it underlined that Maddie's attraction has a lot more to do with her projecting than with reality...

I definitely noticed Maddie's nakedness in bed. How to be delicate...IF the writers were implying what I think they MIGHT have been implying...wow. Rock on with your envelope-pushing selves in 1985! ditzy, you crack me up!

McCain and Maddie had zero charisma together, at least in person. Agree 100% that Maddie found the public persona intriguing, but the man behind the voice wanting in so many ways.

My favorite parts of this episode are the "boinking" banter, both for its sheer melody of words, but also due to the fact that the use of the word was really groundbreaking....I am still amazed it got through. I think it is tied with the "sexy sexist" banter as my favorite!
One of the ploys of the ML writers was to try and insert some things into the scripts that they knew were not going to get through......more blatant things that they knew wouldn't make it, and in doing so, sometimes they protected some gems!!!
Am I the only one that thinks that Bruce really finds his feet as David Addison in this episode?

I agree w/ the fact that Maddie has a softness about her, even David says it in "It's a Wonderful Job." It's interesting because I think non-essed ML viewers missed that about her. All too frequently, I've heard people describe Maddie as a cold you- know- what. But, she wasn't. True, on the outside, she put on this facade that would suggest that, but we know that deep down, she's got a great heart. I think that's part of why we love her. And Cybill did play her beautifully. She was Maddie Hayes.

And is Cybill not gorgeous in this episode.........even and maybe even especially after she is rained on? Yep--it's kinda funny, she's so buttoned up in the first scenes, and her mascara looks a little overdone (I know that sounds weird, but take a look). Then, after she starts listening to Paul, her necklines get lower and her look much softer. That scene by the fire, she really looks gorgeous, and peaceful, too, which doesn't happen often.

I always wished the writers would have dealt with more of Maddie's past. While we did get some snippets in the later episodes with her parents and with Sam, we never got to the story of Maddie's Blue Moon Girl years. There had to be something there that was not fully brought out that could explain her lack of comradship.
I mean, come on, how many supermodels, retired or otherwise, have only fish as pals, eh?

Yep, Diane, I agree that this is where Bruce starts to shine...he becomes David in this ep, I think. His reactions to Maddie are so much less staged, and so much more deeply felt...the "I can't be jealous..." scene especially.

Agree with you folks about Maddie's softness in this episode...one of the few where we really get to know the woman behind the facade. Now I would NEVER say that I fully comprehend the workings of the opposite gender, there are secrets there that will just not be revealed. However seeing things from Maddies perspective, in this and other episodes, at least gave me an insight that I never had before.

Too bad the real show never did...but Virtual Moonlighting's got ya covered, graycav...see Season 6, "Cold Feet, Warm Hearts"

I think you expressed in perfectly, diane! In fact, I think that's what Maddie's story throughout the entire series boils down to. She had one reality, one existance, one life until the bottom fell out and she met David. Now she has a new reality, a new life, and a new sense of self, and she struggles between accepting it and embracing it, or rejecting it and trying to get the old one back.
And yes, Maddie is breath-takingly gorgeous in this episode. That is one thing that always jumps out at me when I watch it. As unappealing as the purple top and blue slacks combo seems now, it brings out her eyes beautifully. And her hair is lovely, as well.
About your script...what does David say when Maddie asks if he thinks Laura is pretty? As someone whose name is Laura, I find this of utmost importance. I'm not kidding.
