I love this episode, but there's one nit-picky thing that drives me a little crazy...when David is following Joan, I find it increasingly hard to believe he doesn't realize she's not Maddie. I can understand his mistake at first: she's pretty far ahead of him, with the hat pulled down low and the coat brim turned up; considering his emotional state, it's not surprising that he wouldn't notice the fact that she doesn't quite move like Maddie, and the shoes aren't exactly the same. There's no reason for him to think someone else would be wearing Maddie's coat and hat, so he doesn't.
But when he has his face pressed to the hotel room window, and sees Joan's hair, which is quite obviously a lot longer than Maddie's (it is still in a bun at this point, but kind of falling down), and more importantly, sees that she is wearing a BLACK dress, I just can't quite make that leap to believe he wouldn't figure it out. He has followed Maddie from the office, and knows that she hasn't been home to change, so she must still be wearing the cream suit she had on earlier. David is after all, a detective--it is his JOB to notice details like what someone is wearing, or how their hair looks...and considering the amount of time he has spent looking at Maddie, you can bet the farm that he's practically memorized every strand on that honey-blonde noggin.
I'm sure that, as far as costuming goes, they were trying to play up the good girl/bad girl imagery with Maddie and Joan's contrasting outfits (there's a shot of them standing side-by-side, coming into the bar), but they probably could've gotten the point across with their coats, and dressed them more similarly underneath.
I know, it's a minor quibble...but when you're essed, even the little details matter!
EDIT: Just watched this one again, and Joan actually walks right by David in the bar scene. He gives her a quick once-over as she passes...particularly at the plunging back of her dress. Aagh!
