Another question: If David simply goes along with the bet just for the challenge and the fun of it, why then does he get mad and seem hurt before the bet is agreed upon? And then again when it appears that Maddie has won the bet? Well, I think the first reason he gets mad and hurt is that he doesn't really see the need to change. He honestly believes that he is keeping morale up, and therefore keeping Blue Moon on an even keel. Later on, he is ticked because first, he LOST, which is enough on its own, but second, because Maddie waffled back and forth so many times and actively TRIED to get Dave to lose. He felt there was a lack of honor on the part of his competitor in that manner.

Lin--yours is great as well! I don't think he was sincere at all. Remember, he was the one that let her climb the clock tower in the pilot!! LOL!! He is definitely playing her and then some. He gets out of the car and sings about Maddie doing the limbo later!! At this point he is focused on winning the bet and proving to Maddie that he can not sing or do the limbo... when he wants to! Oh you said it! David knew how to play Maddie from day 1! And She fell for it too!

Great questions and answers, all! My questions are:
1. Why is Maddie "hurt" by David's lack of/refusal to change over the past seven months? Does this seem like a significant word choice, and if so, do you think Maddie herself realizes it's significant?
2. Maddie accuses David in his office: "You don't care about me!" Do you think she really believes this?

What happened to Clark? Well, we know he is toast, but how, when and where remain a mystery. I always wondered by Emily Greydon would whack him anyway? I mean, without her cash, the bad guys would have taken care of it without her involvement. Yeah, he was a pain and a disappointment, but all she had to do was ignore him. The entire plot kinda unwinds when you bring in the second note. The first was rather easy to understand. Clark fakes his kidnapping, sends the note to get some cash and pay off his gambling debts. Dave and Maddie thwart this, so he does NOT get his money, meaning that he is still indebted to the mob. Hmm. I suppose he goes to his stepmother, expecting the sympathy he talked about, and she in turn ventilated his cranium with that snub nose revolver. Still doesn't explain why she goes through all the trouble with the second note. Even if she THOUGHT the first was real, why not just dump the body somewhere. NOT putting it in the van that she has rigged to blow seems like a lot of trouble to go through just to leave a bunch of unanswered questions. And she obviously had help with the van. Ahh, its just a TV show. Gray, thanks for this...you have summarized the plot mysteries succinctly...and I thought I was the only one nutty enough to be puzzling over this! (I watched that scene with good ol' Emily on the stairs four times--I still couldn't figure it out!)

What does it mean when David says, “You are one tough customer.”? Maddie is not going to give an inch on this whole bet thing...she's not going to give him a free pass, even if they did just "make" $50,000 (which of course, she's conflicted about anyway--so I don't think she would feel that celebrating was appropriate). David is, I think, used to winning arguments based on his fast-talking charm and quirking smile (hey--it would work on me! ), but he hasn't managed to bring Our Miss Hayes over to his side completely, despite seven months of fairly strenuous attempts. She's tough, all right, but it makes those moments when she softens up a little--and there are several of them in this ep--all the more meaningful!

Before I get into the questions - great ones, all - I just wanted to make a comment. To me, this episode is quintessential Moonlighting. Both Maddie and David are true to character, Agnes is great, and even the wobblies do a great job, albeit in silence. There is chemistry, banter and overlapping dialog. Did I mention, that they both look great? Totally agree, lin. The chemistry, especially, SIZZLES--that look between them in his office is habanero-hot!!

One more question: how do you think this episode furthers Maddie and David's personal relationship...if at all?
OK, I've hogged the board enough at this late hour...will check in tomorrow!

This is the episode I used to show folks who never saw ML to show them what it was all about. It had everything! Maddie looking spectacular! Dave looking suave and debonair! A case with a big name guest star! Music! Action! Gunplay! The BMW getting it's front spoiler broken when jumping a curb (a regular occurrence)! After watching this every guy WANTED Maddie and WANTED TO BE David. Girls (well at least most) wanted the opposite. This episode wasn't a 10 because of the plot hiccups, but a VERY solid 9. Besides, the plots were never the reason we watched anyhow.

She knows that DAVE knows that she is running on the razors edge with regards to finances, yet he doesn't seem a bit interested in getting the corporate cash flow running. It appears that Dave is just going with the flow and keeping his work ethic (what little there is) and lifestyle on cruise control while draining what is left of the Bank of Maddie. I think she also feels that she is honestly trying to become more spontaneous, more likeable, and while not very successful, she is working at it more than Dave is going in the other direction.

As with question 1, I think she does believe it. If Dave really cared about her, he would care about things that are important TO her. Sidenote: Why am I always taking Maddie's side lately? Somebody must have substituted my morning cup of Joe for chamomile tea!

What does it mean when Maddie says, "This is important for you, for us."? Wow, you can read a lot into these little words. In "Maddie-speak", I hear her saying that David has to take this business seriously in order for them to make it professionally (and personally?). Your right Lin, I do tend to read into things more than I should!! LOL! But, I do think there are several instances in this episode where we see the side of Maddie fighting her attraction to David. And David wears his heart on his sleeve almost throughout this one, don't you think? Maddie has been there for 7 months and has never known a man like David. Not saying she was not aware of guys like him, but this is probably the first time she has come to know someone like him. She pretty much confesses this to a priest in a confessional. She wants him to change, but when she starts to see his transformation she doesn't like it like she thought she would. Kind of a revelation like in "It's a Wonderful Job". But, she needs him to grow up so Blue Moon can actually work. It is not unreasonable for her to expect proper office decorum and when she comes in to find David on top of a desk entertaining the kids it is understandable that she gets more than a little peeved. When she says "it's important for us" I think she means their working relationship and Blue Moon. But when she adds "for you" I think she really means she wants David to change to fit her mold or her idea of what she wants him to be IF she is to consider a relationship of the kind outside of the office....and she has considered it!! She has had and will have dreams that involve him and reveal her inner most thoughts and feelings. David, on the other hand, is also peeved before the bet is placed. And I don't think it is because he got caught standing on a desk singing. He knows that was not exactly the correct behavior in a place of business, but when Maddie starts in on him he realizes, not for the first time, that she looks at him as just another immature wise guy. He has spent most of the past 7 months falling for her and knows she is "one tough customer". He is starting to learn what makes her tick and what makes her explode...and he loves it!! So, being told to grow up frustrates the heck out of him in this regard and he asks her "What do you want?" Hmmm, kinda sounds like what he says in ATTTM when he says "Just tell me what to do and I will do it." And he goes along with the bet for the reason Gray said, the challenge and quite possibly he knows it will be fun to try and prove to Maddie that if he changes she really would not like it. And he enjoys her realization of this during their conversation in the car. Or....I could most definitely be reading too much into this!! LOL!!

I think she also feels that she is honestly trying to become more spontaneous, more likeable, and while not very successful, she is working at it more than Dave is going in the other direction. I agree on the business side of things, but on the personal side for Maddie, I think she is hurt because she possibly feels David is not willing to make a few changes in order to make her happy. Maybe she is a tad bit spoiled! She has a father that is a successful businessman and she knows he never stood on top of a desk at his office!! But, she wants him to at least seem more responsible. She thinks that if he makes this effort she could possibly consider a different kind of relationship with him. And that is why she says "You don't care about me." And at this point in her own Maddie-way, she really feels this way. I think she does believe it. If Dave really cared about her, he would care about things that are important TO her. gray Gray, you keep taking Maddie's side and you will have to change your signature to "Hilarious, perceptive and...sensitive. A deadly combination" ;D
