So bees had the (IMO) excellent idea to start a "Clean Slates" thread. I'm not sure whether this is what she meant, but I have two questions related to this episode: 1. Do you think David has a clean slate (not just in terms of Rita, but everything that led up to Chicago)? 2. Should Maddie get one? (And does she think she deserves one?) Please feel free to add any questions of your own!

Both of them have slates that need some major cleaning!! Imo, I think David knew his slate was not totally clean because of several factors, but he was so angry with Maddie for questioning their relationship, leaving for Chicago, refusing him phone calls or visiting rights while there, coming back married to Walter and then telling him the baby was Sham's. This anger kept him from admitting to her that he had not exactly been innocent in their problems. Of course he dirtied his slate big time with Rita, but he also messed up with not taking the initiative with courting Maddie in the style she was accustomed to. He did make an attempt to connect with her in BoB, only to find Sham at her house. Granted, when they finally "got to together" everything was done in reverse and all of the sudden they were like a secluded couple on their honeymoon. But, it seemed as though David could have asserted himself more in the dating game department! Maddie's slate certainly was not perfect before and she knows it. She also knows that after The Big Bang she did little to encourage David to lay their relationship out in the open. She wanted to hide and she wanted him. She was engulfed in so many emotions and feelings that David evoked in her for that secluded month or so that it frightened her. So she ran! The ol' Maddie Hayes Supremes imitation! When she asked David for a clean slate I think she was sincere and knew she had done her fair share of complicating their relationship. Her willingness to ask for one...and this is Maddie Hayes we are talking about ...makes her very deserving of a "Clean Slate". Gosh, I would just love to hear what the male perspective is on this!! Ahem...Gray!!

Ya know, it always seems like the one recommending that people start off with a clean slate have the dirtiest plate to clean! In this case of course, I am referring to Maddie.
I pull some comments from the REWATCHING thread on this episode:
I don’t think Dave ever linked his one night fireworks display with their relationship, where on the other hand her leaving for Chicago had EVERYTHING to do with it. Dave doesn’t mention Sam at all, or hold that against Maddie, and that little indiscretion was right in Dave’s face…not a fling when it was obvious that Maddie (at least at that point) didn’t want any part of the Addison charm.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that Dave's boinking Rita was not, by any measure, as damaging as Maddie's running AROUND with Sam and running AWAY from Dave. It's not like D&M HAD a relationship when Rita was "available", just the opposite.
His slate was clean in my opinion.

If Maddie knew about Rita do you think David would still feel like his slate was clean?
Gray, very good insight! I understand you think David's slate is clean, but I am curious as to why you say they had no relationship at that point? What was Maddie running from?
Gosh, I love this place!! Boys are so fun!! (don't take that the wrong way anyone!!) ;D

Sorry, but I think that David had a clean slate. And I do not blame him at all for his "boink" with Rita. MAddie must have made him feel like so much less than a man. Her "pact" talk was just a constant slap in the face. In my opinion, David was stupid to have put up with so much from her. How much should any man take? From "To Heiress Human" to "A Trip to the Moon" Maddie must have made David feel like he was not good enough for her. Even though she may have been afraid of eventually being hurt by him..she came off as a major bitch! And David did tell her he loved her many times and almost begged for her attention! In my opinion, Maddie should have had to beg him to forgive her!

Uhm... what can I say? You make your username honor, iluvdavid. And, well, you might have spoken from the hearts of some people here... from mine, for sure. Have I said I love your username?

Oh my goodness....did IluvDavid use the "B" word when referring to our Maddie?
It is so totally true.....that she was a tad bitchy occasionally, but to write Maddie off without a look into that complex character is kind of a disservice.
And David is our darling, but he was surely not blameless in the things that happened between them....even when they were apart.
Methinks there is a bit of residual chalkdust on both of their slates.....guess it is just lucky that we love flawed characters!
Edited to say that: perhaps the "B" word is a bit over the top, but remember, in 80's terminology, any woman who was strong and self reliant was quite often referred to as such. I use the word tongue in cheek, at best!

The B word near Maddie's name never fails to raise my hackles. I will exit stage left and pretend I didn't see this.

Well.... girls I know you are waiting for me throwing those glass objects, but I won't. I am too upset. I wish I never saw this "B" word near Maddie's name. So, I decided to make a pact with myself that this never happened. I never saw this ugly word.

So, I decided to make a pact with myself that this never happened. I never saw this ugly word. I'm with you on this one. To me, Maddie Hayes is one of the strongest characters that ever graced my screen, and Cybill will always be one my favorites leading ladies. It took a lot in those days to put up with men, and no matter how much she fought for her character, I'm sure at the end Glenn did what he wanted most of the time, without respecting Cybill's wishes. That's what I perceive every time I watch one of those comments on my DVDs.

Maddie is a tough cookie, that's for sure. I think you are referring to Cybill opposing to play Maddie the way she was written in season four, right? Well, whoever was responsible for Maddie's aberrations after the big bang - and I don't think anybody would ever blame Cybill, I'm convinced she fought for her character - sad fact is we have to put up with how Maddie acted in season four, and discuss it.
