I just rewatched this episode, and one thing I noticed about it was just how revealing Maddie and David's fantasies were in peeling back the layers of how each character understands the other. Even though 'Zack' and 'Rita' are obviously not David or Maddie in personality, they each exhibit characteristics that speak to D&M's fears about each other.
Looking at Maddie's fantasy, I think the way in which Zack betrays Rita speaks to a lot of her fears about David and their relationship. Rita is happily settled with a safe man, Jim, when Zack, who is totally 'the wrong guy' comes along (and wasn't his introduction SO David? XD) and intrudes on that. She feels guilty for being in this 'wrong' relationship, but when she tries to break it off, Zack tells her that he REFUSES to give up their elicit affair ("because if you give up on your dreams, you're just wasting 8 hours a night sleeping.")
I think Maddie does see David as a bit of a dreamer and unrealistic--and INTENSE, and the prospect of being with someone who go to extreme measures to be with her frightens her. Also in her dream, Zack gives up Rita as soon as the police cotton on to the plan--and I think Maddie is really afraid of just being a short and intense conquest, something enjoyed 'in the moment' and quickly abandoned. She craves stability, which neither Zack nor David seem to provide in the long-run.
David's fantasy emphasizes the verbal interplay between the 40s equivalents--while Maddie's tended to show herself as the pursued and David as the pursuer, David has them on a more equal, combative playing field. Rita's behavior in dream--her cold, bombshell persona--suggests to me that David is afraid of never emotionally reaching Maddie. She really is a heartbreaker, and she could very easily break HIS heart...but he has some serious insecurities about ever touching hers.
On a lighter note, there were some great moments where their usual personas really came through: "Name's Chance...Chance, Cash, Johnny, Brick, Lonesome, Shane, McCoy. You can call me Zack." to me was SO David. I also loved when Rita said to Zack, "It's time." and his response was to grab her and shout "Hallelujah!" and she shoved him away. That was equally Maddie.
