In retrospect, season 3 can be neatly divided into three sections:
Season 3A: "Son Also Rises" through "Mulberry Street"
Traditional episodes in the spirit of seasons 1-2. I am thankful for each and every one of these and wish there could have been more. NOTE: "Mulberry" may not be entirely typical, but unique dream sequences have been used before ("The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice"), as has a plot wherein David/Maddie unexpectedly follows the other a great distance to get involved in her/his resurfacing personal matters ("Money Talks -- Maddie Walks").
Season 3X: "The Atomic/Wonderful/Poop Trilogy"
Experimental and all over the place. Greatness and not-so-greatness. In my humble opinion, these episodes exist in alternate universes, should be skipped when viewing the series in order, and set aside for their own unique occasions, primarily due to Bruce and Cybill's make out/fake out sessions in all three.
Season 3B: Case Closed
Returning VERY briefly to form, "Poltergeist III -- Dipesto Nothing" gives Agnes (along with Bert, this time) the spotlight she previously enjoyed in "North by North Dipesto", while also properly resuming the tone of Maddie and David's relationship as last observed on "Mulberry Street." After that, it's all heavy relationship episodes which are perfectly handled through "Curious", where in my heart the series ends. I have little interest in "Heiress" or anything after.
It saddens me that the seasons 1-2 spirit that continued to thrive through "Mulberry" seemed to be prematurely cut short by Atomic/Wonderful/Poop (even though "Atomic Shakespeare" is among the glorious high points of the entire series and, truthfully, television as whole), since things would never be the same during or after the remaining episodes of the season.
