This topic could have already been discussed elsewhere and if this is the case I apologize. I looked for quite some time and could not find anything except a mention from our one and only Diane about her some day sharing her thoughts about Sam.
I am curious as to what Diane has to say, as well as anyone else that would like to take this subject on. Maybe this should be moved to the section where David, Maddie, Bert and Agnes are discussed? If so, those in charge feel free to do so....it will not hurt my feelings!!
I love character analysis, so here is my 2 cents on Sam:
First, I must say that I really liked Mark Harmon back in the 80's and have always thought it was great casting slipping him in as Sam on ML. I still think he is a good actor and occasionally watch NCIS.....but still every time I see him I think, OH-- Sam, only older!!
I have always felt Sam was a wolf in sheep's clothing and before he left Maddie I was always afraid he would take advantage of her insecurities. And I think he tried to do so. ( Maddie's insecurities is another analysis of it's own, but I really believe she had some major insecurities and self-doubts)
How can anyone consider marrying someone you have not seen or talked to in a long time (we are led to believe this, I think) unless there was something in it for them. What that something is we can only speculate. Maybe he needed a pretty woman on his arm for image purposes at NASA. But, Sam seemed very anxious to marry Maddie once he realizes that there is something going on between her and David.
Why didn't he tell her that David came to her front door late that first night? Why didn't he admit it at the restaurant the next night that they had met? Sure wish David had said something. Sam was really squirming there for a while! This to me is a huge character flaw----dishonesty.
Yeah, he plays the nice guy and takes David home because he is drunk, but then returns to his apartment later and tells him to back off from a woman he knows more about than he does. (don't think so!) Maddie did not know about this either. Does all of this and assumes cooking a few meals for her will sway her decision. Another character flaw----manipulative
Good thing is Maddie sort of figures out that she does not want him because of the thing she has going with David. But, Sam has hit the road before she can tell him herself. Hmmmm, Sam could not seem to be able to stick around long enough to tell her goodbye. Guess he knew he could not win. Another flaw----cowardly.
Sam the wolf in sheep's clothing..... can't help but think about the old fairy tale........the better to see you with my dear.
