Up until rewatching the show this year I always thought that Sam was a fairly decent character - even though he was horribly in the way of David and Maddie's romance. However, some disturbing unpleasantries have come to light.
I have a problem with Sam invading David's home, obviously uninvited, to tell him he's a loser and isn't worthy of Maddie - like Sam himself is, apparently - like Maddie's made of pure gold or something - and like he can control her decision to marry him behind her back. Sam doesn't know David, nor is David any of his business (even if he did interrupt Sam's date with Maddie); and Maddie isn't some empty headed twit that can't figure out what she wants. Sounds like a manipulator underneath all that cleancut charm.
And why was he complaining that Maddie hadn't told her mom on the phone about his proposal? Number one, he's being nosy and number two, Maddie hadn't decided yet, so what was there to tell - especially with him standing there listening? D'oh. Sam needed to back up a bit, don't you think?
Also, he doesn't mind being more violent than he has to be. David punched him once. Yes, it was wrong and he hit first but it was a fairly simple and to the point move. When Sam retaliated, he apparently meant to do some extra damage to our man. It was a nasty counterattack. I know I winced at how hard he put David down.
Hmmm. Refined mature astronaut Sammy might not be the be-all and end-all of WASP dreams that Maddie (and even David) might have thought.
Besides, a two day reacquaintance, a couple meals, a bowl of cereal, some sweet talk and an "I feel reckless" fling don't make a sudden marriage proposal sensible in my book.
Sam, something about you ain't right.
Maddie, Maddie, Maddie - girl, you should know better!
