It has been so fun to read everyone’s lists, and every time I thought: wow what a great list again! How did they do it? I have to confess: it has been severe torture for me to choose just 10 scenes when there are 100 of them in my head. So while doing the list I tried to get that other 90 out of my head. But it was really easier to throw my head out ;D I wrote and re-wrote the list many times and here is what I finally got. Hope you enjoy:
# Shirts and Skins --- The ‘Pink Panther’ Scene“I don't say that we ought to all misbehave, but we ought to look as if we could.” --- Orson Welles. The reason why I love this scene is simple: I like it when our Maddie demonstrates unruly behavior. The lady basically ‘breaks the law’ and breaks into her partner’s office, but she does it so beautifully! And doesn’t she look sexy in that fancy silk dress, crawling through the rafters to get that what she wants! The ‘Pink Panther’ song is hilarious! I guess the choice of the song is not by accident. There is a certain comparison: our Maddie
IS a Panther (pink dress – pink Panther). She is classy and gracious like panther, she is cautious, she can ‘roar’ if she needs to or if she is provoked to. She can be wild and spontaneous if she feels challenged. And she does feel so challenged by David. So…Maddie proves once again that ‘The best way to behave is to misbehave’ ;D Miss ‘I-behave-all-the-time’ Hayes is ready to make her face dirty if she needs to. And I must admit: dirt becomes her
The scene makes me giggle every time I watch it, and every time I can’t believe she is actually climbing into that ceiling – David should be so proud of her!
# Portrait of Maddie --- ‘Get your hand off my behind’ I love the scenes where they embrace, it doesn’t matter what kind of embrace it is: a loving / tender / warm one or a passionate one. The important thing they are in each other’s arms; it seems so right them being so close! Both Cybill and Bruce do a great performance here: Maddie is happy because they are ‘in the black’ and she is not afraid or embarrassed to share this happiness with David, she flies into his embrace and she feels comfortable in his arms. David is shocked, confused, and he is on cloud nine – he just can’t believe she is in his arms, he can touch her and she seems to like it! The look they share is so hot and passionate! His eyes are saying:
I love you because you are so beautiful! And her eyes are giving a silent reply:
No, I am beautiful because you love me… I can’t take my eyes off them! And they seem can’t take their eyes off each other! ;D David seems to fight for control:
‘You are so beautiful when you get fiscal’Not only they look hot in this scene, they sound hot too! I love that bedroom voices they both use:
‘Get your hand off my behind’‘Is that your behind?’
‘Is that my hand?’But what I like most about the scene is the fact Maddie
IS actually enjoying that hand on her behind, her look tells it all!
#It’s Maddie’s Turn to Cry --- ‘The Dating Game’ SceneThere are two reasons why I love this scene so madly.
First of all, this scene is a genuine reflection of their relationship:
He is the one who can make her laugh like no one else in the whole world can. No matter how upset she is and how hurt he is, or how difficult the situation is – her happiness is what matters for him, even more than his own. The only thing he wishes with his whole heart is too make her smile! He is adorable in this scene!
She is the one who desperately fights her attraction to him, she tries so hard not to love him but the only thing she can do is to love him even more. The same way she is trying to hold back her laugh, she is trying to hold back her feelings to this man. In both cases she fails: she can hold back neither her laugh, nor her feelings. But doesn’t she look cute trying?
The second reason is more personal. Maybe it is just me, but every time I watch the scene I get the impression that it is actually not Maddie and David, but Cybill and Bruce who we see on the screen. They don’t seem like acting, and they are both so natural and seem so enjoying each other’s company. It seems like Cybill is trying so hard not to crack up while Bruce is delivering those corny jokes. And I like to believe that Cybill and Bruce had so much fun on the set.
# Big Man on Mulberry Street --- ‘Plane Scene’
‘Big Man on Mulberry Street’ is a great episode for many reasons. It is just perfect because it has it all: comedy, drama, happiness, sadness, romance, dancing. I think there is hardly a person who doesn’t like this episode or is not mesmerized by this or that scene from it. For me the moment that makes my heart beating like crazy is the scene on the plane. Why? Because, in my opinion, it is almost the only scene from the whole show where they look like a real married couple – a very happily married couple I might add. They are comfortable, relaxed and they are so in love with each other! It is one of the most romantic moments of the show. Again, there are no special effects, no extra props, just the two of them – but the scene is amazing! This scene is very significant in revealing Maddie’s character. She is so soft and caring, not only she loves this man, but she respects his feelings, his right for private pieces, she doesn’t ask unnecessary questions, although she so wants to. She is curious about his past, and of course she needs some answers, but she doesn’t want to cause him any pain, so she leaves the subject open. My heart is melting every time I see that look she gives him: Maddie Hayes is so in love! And she wants to be with him, to feel him, to touch him:
‘If I can borrow half a shoulder?’David’s answer is not only sweet, but also makes it clear that he loves her too and wants to spend his life with her:
‘Only for about the next 20 or 30 years. Then I'm gonna need it back.’When she lays her head on his shoulder the look she has says: ’20-30 years? But I need it forever!’
# To Heiress Human --- The ‘SAAAAAFE’ Scene
What can I say: I just love these pranks and frolics in the car! ;D ;D I have to confess: actually I love all scenes where these two are breaking those pacts. Yeah, I know how childish and immature of me it is, but i just can't help it
. What makes this scene special for me is the kiss. This kiss reminds me of another kiss, the one from the ‘Trunk Scene’, it is soft, slow, not wild, not frenzied, but still so sweet and genuine. And this time Maddie is the one who actually initiated the kiss: she looked in those beautiful green eyes, she smiled that sweet smile and she leaned over to kiss him. This moment is significant because Maddie realizes something: Thinking with your head is one thing, but thinking with the heart is another. Feel first. Think later. It's the natural order. Brilliant dialogues add special coloring to the scene. Cybill and Bruce deliver those lines so great, so that we don't only
see the passion, we also can
hear all the excitement, confusion, and sometimes uncertainty in their voices:
M:
‘I am glad what happened - happened, I am also glad it’s not gonna happen anymore, but I am glad it happened! I mean it was pleasurable. I do think it’ll deepen our friendship, you know what I mean?’D:
‘Yes, but yeah I mean no…It was pleasurable for me too, very pleasurable as a matter of fact. Especially now that I know what you do what you do, did what you did’M:
‘No, I do, I did’The whole scene is so steamy, especially the part where they decide to ‘deepen their friendship’ once again, and caused that car rolling backwards down the hill. ;D
And of course it was
ABSOLUTELY SAAAAAAAFE….. ;D
# I am Curious Maddie --- The ‘Big Bang’ SceneThe scene should be in the dictionary next to the word
‘HOT’. It is like Christmas –
TERRIFIC – and yes, it has to keep happening! ;D I think I won’t be tired of watching it even when I am 99 years old and is out of my mind, I think it will stay with me. This scene still takes my breath away, even after all these years. To describe my feelings I have to quote David Addison: the amazing thing about it is that you always learn something new about the scene!
And every time our duo proves over and over again the holy truth: when love is not madness, it is not love. I melt every time when I see them holding, kissing, touching each other. Both of them look so damn yummy that I get the shivers. I am breathless every time watching their ‘body dancing’: where every kiss, every touch is just discovery, discovery, discovery. Bodies never lie. This passion, melting in the tunes of ‘Be my Baby’ is a barometer telling the state of their soul's weather. And for me to watch them is like to hear their hearts speak.
And if he didn’t tell the
‘I love you’ (but he did right?
) his heart definitely did.
A D O R A B L E# A Trip to the Moon --- The ‘Love Declaration’ SceneFor me it is the most romantic scene on the show. And the one I’ve been waiting for a long time. It all started with a smoky argument in the office:
‘Why doesn’t anybody know about us? We’ve been doing what we’ve been doing for 4 weeks now and nobody knows about us!’
‘Who would you like to know about it?’If only she knew!
David’s behavior in this scene is something I’ve been expecting from him for a long time, but never got. Till this moment of course. He doesn’t play ‘hide and seek’ and ‘catch me if you can’ or one of those games of ‘sweet avoidance and denial’! He is decisive, confident and his actions
and words (!) speak volumes:
‘Block that door!’‘I have a little announcement to make, a piece of news….’He starts his speech being very excited, angry, hurt and furious, but his voice is getting softer with every word he says, till we hear the sweet:
‘I think that I have fallen madly, completely, heads over heels in love with her!’I get shivers every time I watch the scene and hear THOSE words. And I still can’t believe he is saying what he is saying! Finally! It seems like he doesn’t believe himself he actually declared his love to this woman in front of the whole world! He is confused, but it is such a sweet confusion! He is not a kind of guy who likes to express his feelings in public, openly. But being afraid of losing Maddie he makes this huge step. And it works: Maddie’s smile and the look on her face and her sweet ‘yeah…maybe’ say it all! She is happy and I am so happy for her, for them!
And even the fact that Bruce and Glenn Caron hate the scene doesn’t make it less valuable and dear for me.
# Big Man on Mulberry Street --- ‘Maddie’s Monologue’This scene is one of those where Maddie
‘ I-hate-Spontaneity’ Hayes starts acting impulsively. She doesn’t act like this often, but when she does – it is always something huge and tremendous. Just like this one: leaving LA in the middle of the night and following David to NY. When I watched the episode I was like: ‘what else could happen?’ And then comes this monologue! It is not just
WHAT she says but also the way
HOW she says it what makes me breathless. Her voice – soft, calm, almost inaudible – reflects all those emotions which Maddie experiences in that moment: her concern about him, her embarrassment about her spontaneous coming, her bitter resentment and disappointment about him never telling her about his past, and her strong desire to be with him come what may! She looks so angelic sitting on his bed – alone – her silhouette being buried in deep blue lighting. She hardly looks him in the eyes while delivering the speech, maybe because she feels awkward to be there or maybe because she is afraid he will see those feelings in her eyes which she wants to hide from him. This monologue is not the one we would expect from Maddie Hayes, it is not fluent, organized or well-considered, it is more like a stream of consciousness - rambling, incoherent, scrappy. Never had she looked more vulnerable and more sincere than in this scene! It is one of Cybill’s best moments on the show and definitely her best speech ever! Maddie so deserves to be held and kissed after delivering such a brilliant monologue – how could he not take her into his arms?
But his
‘don’t go, I want you to stay’ said in that mellow voice in combination with that velvety look he gives her is enough to see
HOW much he is impressed and
WHAT she means to him.
And Maddie… you
DO have
THAT kind of relationship, you
DO.
# And the Flesh was Made Word --- ‘Who stole the soundtrack?’ This scene makes me giggle every time; it is such a cute scene! Maddie has a couple of things she’d like to discuss with the wobblies this morning. The bees look at their Queen Bee concerned, they definitely don’t expect any good news. First, she thanks them for coming to her, how did she call it, oh yes, ‘really nice wedding’ (Oh Maddie!
), then some words about Terrie’s baby boy, and she leaves the sweetest news for dessert:
‘Thank you all for the lovely wedding gifts, I really appreciate it, I have however return them all to you, as Mr. Bishop and I are no longer married.’The reaction of the wobblies is adorable! They are jumping with joy, they are rejoicing, they are screaming, they are congratulating each other sincerely, they are happy! God knows how long they’ve been waiting for this divorce! ;D They don’t stop their celebration even after Maddie reappears and gives them THAT look. They just switch off the sound and keep on celebrating! Aren’t they adorable?! The scene is cute but also significant, as it shows the eternal love and devotion of the staff to their bosses. And, although, Maddie will never admit it, but the real reason she reappears after her announcement is to see whether her words made any effect, whether these people still care about her and David the way they used to. And I think she loves what she sees, even if she never shows it.
David, coming out and observing the stuff doing what they're doing, looks puzzled and amused. It seems like old times: Maddie is in her office, the staff is going crazy instead of doing their job! His
‘I’m gonna close my eyes and whoever stole the soundtrack – put it back!’ cracks me up! I love this special scene between Maddie and the staff. It is nice to see her sharing the news with them, as if they are her family, she feels close to them and she knows that they’ve got the right to know, after all those years of devotion.
#Gunfight in the So-So Corral --- ‘Shake your ‘do’There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do
Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do"
She looked good (looked good), she looked fine (looked fine)
She looked good, she looked fine and I nearly lost my mind
So did I, David, so did I. I lost my mind too, and I keep losing it every time I re-watch the scene. And I do re-watch it really often; maybe it is because I still don’t get the right attitude ;D ;D What I like about the scene is this sweet naïve behavior Maddie performs. Maybe it is not
THE Maddie Hayes we all know and love, but still there is something sweet about her in this scene. Maybe it is her eagerness to learn the things:
‘What kind of attitude? I can do anything if you just give me a chance!’Maybe it is her stubbornness:
‘We can just forget about this whole detective business. You can just take me home.'|Or maybe, just maybe it is the way she looks in this scene – young, innocent and so damn beautiful.
Now David, he is charming, sweet and looks gorgeous. I love it how he shows her what the right attitude is: very professional, bery him ;D He enjoys himself and he definitely enjoys her company
They are perfect together: him giving the orders and her following them. Just like real partners do! ;D
This scene will always be special, because it is the starting point. The characters are in the process of their development and sometimes we see more of Cybill and Bruce, than of Maddie and David and that makes the scene so dear, it is as if they learn how to play their characters and they seem to have fun learning this ;D
That’s it. The list is done. I must admit that I could easily do another top 10, or 20 or 30. There are so many scenes which I love and which I didn’t include in the list. But it was such fun to write this list and it is such a pleasure to share it with my moonlighting family! Hope you enjoyed it. Thank you!
