Welcome, notjuanjones.
Yeah, the forum seems really quiet, but here's to hoping a couple of previous regulars will come back once they see some of us are keeping it alive and kicking.
I understand exactly what you mean when you talk about the world these days. For me, it's the pandemic that called me here, I guess. I'm a healthcare worker at the hospital and working there during the corona crisis did a number on me. So I get the escape mechanism ;-) The Moonlighting universe seems so nice and simple compared to everything that's going on these days. All though... when did Maddie and David ever make things simple, huh? Hahaha!
I've also been rewatching all episodes on YouTube. For the life of me, I don't get why streaming services don't pick up older shows like this. Seems to me like it would have worked like a charm during lockdown.
Anyway, nice to see another active member around here.

Hi sandra and notjuanjones. I’m new, too. My name is Anna (or as I corrected my husband 24 years ago) “NOT Annie, don’t you ever call me that!” He still doesn’t know why I hate a name so similar to mine. Ha! The pandemic is also what brought me back to Moonlighting. Scrolling through Twitter one day I stumbled onto the #TuesdaysWithMaddie hashtag and I regressed back to my 1989 self. I can’t get enough! I’m currently on season 4 and I’ve now read every fanfic and making my way through every post on this site. What a treasure this place is, I’m just sad I didn’t find it earlier.

(I’m a fellow “not,” too! :-) ) So, maybe the three of us could start here, and the older posters who still check in occasionally can join at their leisure. I didn’t hate Annie with the passion that so many ML fans seem to. I wasn’t especially sympathetic to her for seemingly being so indifferent to how her husband may have been feeling, but I thought that our pal Addison had to take some hits here, as he was clearly (to me) going on with her to hurt Maddie. This wasn’t Jillian from KH, a woman for whom he clearly had fallen; Annie was, if you’ll pardon the expression, low-hanging fruit. Part of the Season Five writers’ block? I suppose. Welcome your thoughts!

My thoughts on the subject of Annie and David is that they were both behaving badly. Annie, because of the indifference towards her husband, yes... but also because she didn't take her cousin (Maddie) into consideration at all. She clearly knew that Maddie and David had a history together and that Maddie had been having a hard time because of it. I wouldn't have hooked up with him if it had been my cousin. It's something that you just don't do out of respect.
David, on the other hand, was clearly doing it to get a rise out of Maddie. In a way I get it; Maddie (as much as I love her) had kind of kicked him in the nuts with how she handled their relationship. She had really hurt him. However, getting involved with Annie was a low blow. You know, David as a character had always been impulsive and a bit immature on occasion, yes. But he was never petty and getting involved with Annie was some really petty behaviour. That disappointed me. It was so out of character and that wasn't the first time that the writers slipped up character wise in season 5. Especially after the episode 'Perfetc,' Maddie and David changed; they weren't themselves in my book. I don't know what happened, but I found myself wondering who these people were! Anyway, those are my thoughts.

I get that Maddie had to experience something equally awful to the hell David went through in season 4. But, Annie was just gross. This is the hill I will die on . She was Maddie’s cousin and had to have known about the loss of the baby, she could’ve scratched her itch anywhere else, David should’ve been off limits. It was just tacky. I agree David was completely out of character, not for boinking someone else, but because he was so callous towards Maddie.

Welcome all you newbies to the world of the Moonlighting 'essed'. Yes, some of us oldies do dip back in now and again! The current state of the world also makes me want to re-enter the world of Maddie and David, which although undeniably complicated, was full of fun and love - we need that at the moment. So keep watching, rewatching and posting everyone!

The whole arc was just so odd, and for some reason the writers opted to write to the worst of the characters’ quirks rather than their best. What an odd last season (and I know that one of the earlier S5 episodes was supposed to end S5 but wound up in the middle, and the Annie episodes were tacked on, etc.). Just re-watched Shirts and Skins. For my money, might be the best episode of S5. No romance, but loved the competition between the Wobblies, Maddie literally rolling in the dirt to win and the ultimate sign of respect for Maddie to show David: enough trust in his ability and resolve to split things down the middle. And a little of the old spark at the end!

Sometimes I feel like I have three heads.
Have enjoyed reading the old posts and the discussions; I will watch an episode then read what people thought. But it often feels like I’m watching a different show than everyone else!
The other night, I watched the last episode of season two-Camille. This was one of my favorite episodes of the whole series run. Whoopi Goldberg was a big star (who, I guess, really wanted to be on the show), the plot was, as ever, flimsy but fun, there was a ridiculous chase scene and multiple fourth-wall breaking, and there was that achingly bittersweet ending! I STILL am angry they didn’t kiss at the end!! There was a little cool subplot, too, with David trying to prove to Maddie that he was a good judge of character by backing Camille, and being disappointed-but Maddie not lording it over him afterward. It felt like she didn’t think him a lesser by going to the mat for Camille.
And...everyone else hated it!
One of the worst episodes ever. Not enough Maddie and David. Etc. This has occurred frequently since I’ve gotten back into the show. (I hated Sam WAY more than I hated Walter or Annie, for example.) And I mention this not because I expect anyone to change their minds, nor am I going to change mine. But I feel so out of kilter with the group sometimes! Is it just me, or is that just the nature of fan boards? I’m just curious if others have similar experiences.

I love reading someone else's perspective on it, notjuanjones! Therefore, I'm glad that you posted this. Isn't it much more interesting if we don't all agree on everything regarding this show? Imagine if Maddie and David had always agreed... Hahaha! No, but seriously. Someone else's opinion makes you reflect and think about things from a different point of view. There isn't a right or a wrong.
I'm not really sure how I feel about 'Camille.' I'm going to have to watch that episode again, because it's been a while. As for the hatred towards Sam, Walter or Annie: I never hated Walter. Really. I actually thought that he was an okay guy (nobody hit me, please!) He just got caught up in the mix and that wasn't his fault. That's also the way I felt about Sam in the beginning... UNTIL he failed to mention to Maddie that he had already met David, when David interrupted their dinner. That's when I detected a bit of sneakiness to his persona. Of course, when Sam showed up at David's house unannounced and read him the riot act about who was better for Maddie, that's when my sense of hatred really kicked in. Did I hate Sam more than I hated Annie? I think it's almost a tie, because both of them were quite backstabbing characters in certain situations. But I'm leaning towards hating Annie more, because she changed David and his morals and for me, that was the deal breaker.
Now, to get back to your question about similar experiences on a fan board? Yes. I remember being on this fan board once, all disappointed about a certain episode of a certain show and people laid into me! It felt like we had all watched a different episode when I saw the reactions. It happens and it's okay. It keeps your mind open to things you may have missed yourself. It's okay to disagree and I like to spar. Now I'm kind of curious myself to hear what you hated about Sam so much....

It's okay to disagree and I like to spar. Now I'm kind of curious myself to hear what you hated about Sam so much.... Hated Sam because he waltzed back into Maddie’s life after...years, it seems-given her declaration that she’d known him “since I was six” in Sam and Dave-and essentially demanded, in what couldn’t have been more than a few weeks, even given the compression of time in episodic television, that she turn her life upside down to become Mrs. Astronaut. I get that he viewed David (correctly) as a rival for Maddie, but you’d think at some point, if he cared for Maddie at all as a friend, that he’d at least understand that she had some issues to work out with David, and give her the time/space to do so. And, I hated him because David and Maddie belonged together!!! Annie, on the other hand, was just a give-up by the S5 crew. A device. Her presence and activities made no sense, nor did the reaction to her. She purportedly loves her Cousin Maddie, yet has no problem carrying on with the one guy that Maddie’s been in and out of love with for years-and she KNOWS this, and still carries on with him. Not to mention the husband back home, but people, of course, do such things. The former bothered me much more than the latter. Annie was just a reason to make David behave as nastily toward Maddie as he’d been in the entire series, and for Maddie to act completely out of character. Nor did the brushoff/break off by David make any sense. At least Walter had the good grace to get off a great line upon his departure from the show!

I liked Camille, too! Whoopi dressed as Maddie was AMAZING and that last scene kept my heart full all summer. Next Stop Murder and Somewhere Under the Rainbow are two of my absolute favorite episodes although I doubt they rate that high with anyone else. What are some other less popular episodes that you love?

What are some other less popular episodes that you love? One episode that I've always liked and didn't do all that well in the ratings was 'Atomic Shakespeare.' I thought it was funny and superbly done! Glenn Caron said in an interview that it was their lowest rated episode ever and I was kind of surprised! Sure, it had nothing to do with David and Maddie, but I loved it nonetheless. I guess I have a thing for "The Taming of the Shrew' in general, though. I also liked the 'Ten Things I Hate About You' movie, a modern adaption of 'The Taming...' with Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in it. It was a total chick flick, but I still went for it. Hahaha!

‘Atomic Shakespeare’ is my #1! In ‘WWAV’, Jerome tells Baby Hayes: “they are old souls, they’ve been around centuries, I’ve brought them into the world at least a dozen times myself.” For me, ‘AS’ shows us a time when David and Maddie get their relationship right. They meet, fight, and love throughout the ages.

What are some other less popular episodes that you love? I really liked "Shirts and Skins" from S5 (I know, I know). Great plot, the great wordless scene when Maddie breaks into David's office (Cybill never got proper credit IMHO for her physical comedy), a great resolution that showed even after all they'd been through together, M and D still had a friendship/mutual respect that transcended the end of their relationship: David didn't want Maddie to think he was like Fass; Maddie realized, officially, that she could trust David to be a financial/business partner. And after having had her fortune stolen from her, that's a huge thing for her to be able to do. Also, there's a really sweet line that's almost imperceptible if you're not paying attention: as D is leaving the office and talking to the male Wobblies, he says, quietly: "be cool with the girls." Also liked "Money Talks, Maddie Walks," "In God We Strongly Suspect" and "The Son Also Rises."
