Maddie claims her decision to go to the Bower house when David and the others are trying to track the phone calls was purely ‘spontaneous,’ just because she happened to be driving around in the neighborhood.
Yeah, and I’m your Uncle Carl.
She went there deliberately. In part, to help solve the case. Also, by showing up, through her actions she apologizes to David. She essentially credits him with having a good idea. There are other times when she was dying to prove him wrong, but this doesn’t look like one of them. David looks pretty furious when Maddie comes to the door. Maddie smiles, but you can’t tell whether she’s really aiming for Mr. Bower and Claire or for David. Maddie doesn’t say sorry very often, but this could be a way of doing that.
She wants to be with him, sort of tagging along; probably also very sorry for the nasty fight they had before.
I would note, though, that it does take both of them (as usual) to solve the case. Both ways of thinking, from the logical to the intuitive, can be valuable and it normally takes a little of each of them chipping in to come up with the most information to solve the case. It isn’t always 50-50, but there rarely is a time (when they are in the same town, that is) that only one of them will be necessary to finish the job.
Also, slight point in Maddie’s favor. Even though Dave does come up with a lot of the work to finish the case, as the head of the company Maddie did have the right to tell him to back off. He just completely ignored her, not only because he thought she was wrong, but because he didn’t like being told what to do.
Um, pardon me, but bosses always tell you what to do…that’s why they call them ‘boss.’ That’s what they do! And that's what they're supposed to do. I think because David had de facto been running the ship before Maddie showed up, he resented having to share authority with her and having to be told no sometimes. In point of fact, even before Maddie worked at Blue Moon, she did own the place, and she did pay his salary. He forgets that an awful lot… (In a strange way, even before she got there, she was providing for him! )
For all that people call Maddie a tough boss, and maybe there’s some truth to that sometimes, there are also occasions when she put up with a quite a bit. Plenty of bosses would give you the boot for much less than David routinely gets away with. (It's also pretty difficult to be less serious a captain of the ship than Dave, quite frankly. In Season Four, that lesson hits home very hard. Good jokes and a breezy attitude are not all it takes to keep a business afloat. Sometimes you do need to be just sober about it. But I'm getting too far ahead of myself.)
It’s a delicate seesaw game…and that’s part of what made it so much fun.
