David had been hit upside the head with a bottle and jumped off a ledge into a trash bin, and he gets that ugly gash on his face; but by the time this episode rolls around, a day or something in 'show world' chronology, it's healed up quite nicely.
Sam, on the other hand, looks like he still needs to go to the hospital.
Throughout this cycle, the writers and directors found ways to hint Sam was not the right man for Maddie. This is one of them--a literal sign that David, despite his different status and the way he loses to Sam in the garage fight in the next episode, is "more of a man." (Even that 'loss' is not quite what it seems, as David refuses to give up and goes back to the house anyway.)
