I am posting these early, as I am not sure I will be around exactly at 7 (bless the holidays!)..and I know how eager we all are to embark on this discussion.
So, grit your teeth and dive in!!!
1. How do you feel about the appearance of Demi Moore in this episode. Was it just an attention grabbing device to show off the star's significant other...or was it really planned to set the mood for the episode?
2. Do you think, if Maddie had been a little more receptive to David when they were dancing, that he would even have looked at Annie twice?
3. The BIG question -- who is the villain here.....David or Annie? Why?
4. Does anyone think Maddie brought the whole situation on herself?
5. Why does David find Maddie sitting in his bed? Would the conversation have been different if David hadn't been so hostile?
OK...I guess they are good for a start. I confess, I haven't rewatched yet..... but I think this episode is indelibly burned into my brain!

Good Evening, kids. Before I get into Diane's great questions, 2 things -
My newspaper is saying that Bruce is going to be on Letterman tonight. Not sure if it is a rerun, but worth taking a look. Second, I just have to say that re-watching this episode was so painful. The sadness was just overwhelming, it made me physically ache! This is only a TV show, right???
1. Thinking about the first question, I tend to think that the opening scene between David and the "other woman" was created to set the stage for things to come. This is the first time in a long time that David has even looked at another woman, so it immediately signals a change in his attitude. Someone probably came up with the idea that it would be really cool to have Demi play the "other woman". I still don't like the way David looks at her - it just "ain't" right!
2. I sooooooooooo think that if Maddie had agreed when David suggested that they go out more often, that things would have turned out very differently. I have always felt that this was his last ditch effort to find out where things stood- what was going on in Maddie's head. Her quick response pretty much told him what he wanted to know. In his mind, she had closed the door on their relationship.
3. Who is the villain? Well, I have to say, that there is enough blame for the both of them, but I have to put more fault on David. He is the one who was really nuzzling *A* when they were dancing. He could have left as soon as he dropped Maddie and *A* off. He didn't have to pull her out on the town and then move in for the kiss. He crossed the line first. Yeah, I know that *A* should have pushed him away, but I think that she was at a really vulnerable point in her life and David happened to be the one who supplied the thrill that she was seeking.
4. I believe that Maddie had a huge part in what happened. As I said previously, she had put an end to their relationship. She told her shrink that she and David had finally gotten to a good place and that she had no desire to get back on that roller coaster again. I really don't know what she expected him to do - continue pining over her? Of course, the bad part was that he chose her married cousin - not good.
5. Maddie in David's bed - I think that David was truly surprised to find her there. I think that the conversation might have ended up differently if Maddie had said "the right things". Of course, for us that would involve something along the lines of "I'm sorry. I miss us." But as soon as she started on David about the game he was playing and accusing him of being mad at her, trying to get back at her, etc., that was the end for David. Initially he was ready to listen to her, but not after she started her attack. So, I think that Maddie was hostile first which pushed David into his defensive position.
Well, those are my "spontaneous" responses to the questions. Looking forward to hearing from everyone else.

Folks,
Just got in and have slapped the DVD into the machine. Just for fun, I have put in my copy of the ORIGINAL ABC broadcast.
I'll join the fray in a few moments.

Hello dear ML friends! OK, let's face the frightening monster that's been gobbling up your hearts for decades....... When Girls Collide! It's time to cut its head!!! Ready? Here we go! 1. How do you feel about the appearance of Demi Moore in this episode. Was it just an attention grabbing device to show off the star's significant other...or was it really planned to set the mood for the episode?Definitely planned to set the mood. Same ol' David! Always intrigued by the sight of beautiful women... Nothing to it, most men do it, there's nothing wrong! It's written in their DNA... I mean, we're talking about David!!! IMO, disaster is not in sight yet.

Agree with Lin on the Demi deal. I think it was just a set up to show that dear old Dave was on the lookout for some new fauna. Demi was game for the cameo, so she was a natural fit.
(By the way, as I am zooming through this DVD I see that I taped some Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue TV special. Christy Brinkley has not changed one bit.)
This DVD has commercials. 1989 Hyundai...Mike Ditka...I am really transported back!

I agree with Lin212. This is killin' me!
1. Both. I thought it was a great joke and a different way to break the 4th wall. They were a hot topic in the papers back then and I think it was a way to thumb their noses and say “nah-nah-nah-nah-nah” to the tabloids. And at this point in Maddie and David’s relationship things were very “iffy”. I believe David was at a crossroad----thinking “Do I continue with all of this pain in chasing Maddie, or do I just need to accept the fact that Maddie is never going to want to be with me and in order for her to be happy maybe I just need to back off.”
This may sound weird, but there are times when I like that we see David turn his head to look at other women at this point. It shows that he is still the same ‘ol Dave from seasons 1-3, only maybe more vulnerable because his heart has been touched by his love for Maddie….does that make any sense at all???

Might I add that she starts it all even earlier in the evening... When at her place she puts the cart before the horse by telling David all that crap : "OK, the ground rules. No mud wrestling. No pasty shows etc. etc...." I mean, God! Maddie! Why do you treat him like a baby? Haven't you realized how lucky you are in having him in your life, yet? After all they've gone through, how can she be so blind??

You know, this entire episode started off totally disjointed. At the end of the previous show, Perfec, David and Maddie were to head to Paris....however this was totally ignored. So it was at the end of the run.

2. David had come to a point that if Maddie did not seem interested anymore he was going to try to move on with his own life. If she had even shown an teensy weensy bit of the old spark I think he would have danced with her the whole night. The conversation they have just kills me every time…. tears and all…..when he asks if she is happy. All he really wants is for her to be happy and if that means she is happy without the complications of their very complicated relationship then he would accept that. ….until he realizes that showing interest in Annie keeps Maddie’s attention.

Thank you everyone for starting the great discussion. Ifm not sure I can use appropriate and correct words for this like everyone does, but I really need to make my thoughts clear as well as this episode. Ifd like to trycHere's my feelings.
1. I think DMfs appearance was planned to set the mood for thiscthat David is looking for someone. IMHO he is lost in his silly dream. He becomes blind and doesnft care gwho she ishceither Annie or that beautiful stranger is OK with him, just needs gattractive and hoth.
3. I believe that David doesnft intend to hurt Maddie, his bad habit just appears. If he wants something, he usually darts for it. He doesnft care anything else, whether he is wrong or not, just surrenders himself to passion (wrong passion in this case, I think). I canft help but compare this with Jillian case. In Knowing Her, he tells Maddie gSo, we disagreed. You say potato, I say spud.h Then he walks toward Jillian. To me it sounds as if he excuses himself for being with another woman. And by that he is implying that he is comparing her with Jillian. The similar situation appears when he tells Maddie he is happy in his bed room, however he doesnft look as happy as he says. He knows itfs hard to get Maddie and sometimes wants to make her jealous. Ifm not sure he has the same intention in this episode, but I think he has something unsatisfied with Maddie and becomes harder to Maddie, Annie shrewdly uses it.
On the other hand Anniefs actions look strange to me. I sometimes feel doubts about her personality. She first looks at David in the elevator and see him at the office, then later she eagerly eggs Maddie to look for a new man. In spite of hearing Maddie criticizing David (I think itfs kind of Maddiefs defense, she doesnft want Annie to approach him.), Annie more and more gives the eye to him at the dance hall. And I donft like the conversation at Maddiefs living room; Annie says the mean thing about her close cousin. I think she uses her different faces to Maddie and David, probably doesnft want to be hated by each of them. In the next episode, moving in his apartment, she says to Maddie that she doesnft care about her husband but cares about Maddiefs feelings (or something like that). I canft believe Ifm hearing this! And finally she comes back to her husband. Besides she reports(!) what David was doing in his bathroom to her kind cousin. It completely destroys reconciliation between David and Maddie. I think at least itfs one of the manners that she shouldnft say anything bad about David especially to Maddie. She uses situations unfairly to get advantage for herself without thinking about how her actions will affect other people.
I really want to believe that David will come to know it, and that he has realized, while he is with Annie, he canft get what he has had with Maddie and canft see what he has seen in Maddie, even if he might slightly miss being with a easy and pretty girl like her.
