It may not seem like much, but think of his comment in All Creatures about how she's the closest person he knows since he moved out west. Aha. |

From I Am Curious:
Maddie: What are you doing here, Miss Dipesto, it's late!
Agnes: I don't know. I just didn't want him to come in here tomorrow and find this mess. He's so--
Maddie: I know. (Pause) You're a good person, Agnes.
Right after Maddie says it, Agnes shoots her this weird look, as if she notices that she didn't quite finish the thought, and wonders if they're on the same page. So why is she agreeing with her? The conclusion does not exist. Except by now, Maddie can guess where this is all leading.
It harks back to the "They're both terrific" surprise remark in Maddie's Turn to Cry.
We never find out, from either one of them, just what they think David "is so."
Maybe because Maddie finally knows, all too well, what David is about.
