Hi Mlbinger, we haven’t met officially yet. I am Marta, Disagreer in Chief on this board.
This is very interesting what you say about the Casino situation. BUT! My take on it is different.
I don't read the situation as being manipulated by DA. It is more straightforward to me. MH is acting not just spontaneously but impulsively to the point of being reckless. DA is trying to shake her resolve to continue playing by pointing out the obvious – she cannot risk that much. She is naïve and swept up in the moment, while he knows that the house always wins and nobody in their right mind gambles for high stakes with the proprietor in his casino’s back room. Yes, she seemed to have a winning hand but who knows what her opponent would have had if she continued. He is a crook and does not play in a Havaiian shirt.

Newly obsessed ML fan. I was looking at this from the perspective of the cards. And I’m not a poker player, so could be totally wrong. DA knew he had 2 queens. And reptile Ron had a king that we could see.So Dave had a pretty good hand. Also, Maddie’s reaction that she won 16k vs 200k. And Dave running away and saying OOPS. You are correct that the house has the advantage, so I can see your point here.

Well, you certainly know more about cards than I do!
I see the cards dealt in the game as a decoy, a distraction to the main point of the story. As GGC (Glen Gordon Caron, the creator of the show… do you know those things?) said in his interviews – think what the truth of the story is. To me, it is that DA will look after MH. What is the notion on which the truth and the intrigue hinges in this particular story? The house always wins.
The crook is not going to let MH win her old life back. She will lose all she still has, including the house (and ‘her dignity’). DA knows it, Casino people know it. The only person who does not is MH. It is somewhat against the character but let just say she is still hurting so much that her judgement is clouded. DA says ‘Oops’ at the end but this is, in my view, a continuation of the decoy and a return to comedy after the poignant moment when D talks sense to M (and she follows his advice!). Similar to the beginning of the episode when they leave the would-be suicide on the window ledge without a second glance after a serious moment of trying to talk him out of jumping off.
We do not see Ron’s cards for the whole time on the screen. He could have even switched them to spite her and fool her into thinking that she could have won. This would torment her for a while and he would have a small win via psychology, since he lost the opportunity to win a big bet at cards. I am very intrigued by what happened next. I do not think it was the casino situation that caused the rift that prevented her from ‘maybe showing him a piece of her heart’.
And all the above and MUCH more is the beauty of ML. Layer upon layer masterfully crafted together.

What I know about cards I learned from an episode of Castle. LOL.
For as icy as Maddie is, when she gets mad, she is enraged. She smacked Ron earlier when he made a gross pass at her. So, you’re right that she isn’t thinking clearly. And who would be? Some slime ball steals your money and is then completely unrepentant.
Your explanation makes sense. I was unaware that each episode had an overarching truth to it. I will have to think about that as I rewatch.
We were never really told why D missed the plane. It seems like there was a story there.

Don't put much stock in this overarching truth business. GGC's example of one in the EDFIV is that M loves her mother. Pretty meh, eh?

I felt moved to jump in here because I, too, am intrigued by what happened next. I think this may be my next fanfic. The wheels are spinning...

They clearly doted on Maddie. And she was happy to be showing her mom her office. Something here that is so 80’s, is the men go to D’s office for a drink while the women chat in Maddie’s. I guess it never occurred to Mr Hayes that the women might like a drink. 🙂

Hi Mlbinger, are you there? Still binging? I have got an ML challenge for you, if you're game.

Hi Mlbinger, are you there? Still binging? I have got an ML challenge for you, if you game. Yes, still here. Have been having fun reading the show recaps. I’ve been through seasons 1-3 a couple of times. Four is depressing to me so I’ve watched once. I like 5, which I know many don’t. Except for the last 3.

By the recaps you mean the Rewatching section, don’t you?
I’ve read everything (I think) that has been posted on the board. It is fun, sometimes. I would not call the Rewatching 'the recap' as it doesn't come anywhere close to stating the most important points of an episode. There are interesting observations in the Rate this episode section, not too often though (he he).
I wonder what this heralded ‘guide to the episodes’ will be like. I will read it and probably have a heart attack when I am at it …
I like all seasons, probably the more dramatic episodes of season 4 more than others and the last 3 episodes are perfectly OK with me as they are full of subtleties and clues.

If it is Tuesday, we are doing Moonlighting.
It looks like it is just two of us here, if you are still here, that is, Mlbinger.
Let’s see where we left off.
You call yourself Mlbinger and I took it literally and seriously, but when you explained how much you’d watched I was disappointed. Unless it was in a month, this is not binging, this is trifling and you do not require any emergency assistance. To the contrary, you may require an excuse to watch more and measure up to your aspirational moniker. I am going to supply such an excuse for you.
So there it goes, an ML challenge.
(Caveat emptor: You do realise that it is a Ron Sawyer situation and you cannot win?)
1. Please define ‘icy blonde’. You called MH an ‘icy blonde’. Which particular situations convince you that she is an ICY blonde?
2. Please define ‘many’ with a reference to the statement (your statement): ‘She told David many times, I Love You’.
How many times did she say it and what were the episodes and circumstances in which she said it?
I would welcome your answer within 48 hours, it is acceptable to spend 72 hours. Any longer will confirm that you were only semi-binging, if at all.
Anyone else is welcome to try. We may come against definitional issues (how long is a piece of string?) but any valiant attempt will be appreciated (and hopefully fun).
