Giving you some reference material from the original script which might figure in the discussion.
First, the intro that aired was not in the original script....in fact there were two different approaches -- which I can add later....the funniest of which was getting the audience to cast their votes for either David or Sam......guess this was the precursor of American Idol.
The other two points are going to be rather lengthy, but I think worth it. The first is the complete scene from the script when Sam goes to David's apartment:
SHOCK CUT TO:
TIGHT ON DAVID
...his head buried in his pillow....the shades drawn to keep out the morning light...unshaven...unwashed...still in T-shirt and pants...having walked in from the night before and tossed himself onto the bed...arms and legs sprawled in basic swastika position...thoroughly exhausted...drained...but not in a deep sleep...and then...as he SHIFTS ABOUT on the bed...STILL for a moment...and...
CLOSER ON DAVID
...as his eyes OPEN...realizing...and he ROLLS OVER...then reacts...trying to focus on...
THE FIGURE OF A MAN
...standing over his bed...his face cloaked in silhouette...
SAM (after a long moment): This is getting to be a familiar sight, you...flat on your back.
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as David gets his bearings...looking very much the worse for wear...and then...
DAVID: You in the wrong room...or am I in the wrong bed?
SAM: Guess you didn't hear me knock...
DAVID: Guess not....
(and then realizing)
DAVID: Must've slept through the part where you kicked down the door too.
(and then, PULLING HIMSELF up on his elbows; starting off the bed)
DAVID: Guess I'll just be hopping in the shower now.
...but...
SAM presses a firm hand to David's chest...pushing him back onto the bed...no hint of a smile...no more bullshit...
SAM (tossing it to him): Here's your key back from the other night. (and then)...I think it's time you and I talked.
ON DAVID
...just looking at him for a LONG MOMENT...he knows what this is about...
DAVID (after a moment): Yeah...well...I'm comfy.
ANOTHER ANGLE
...to include them both....favoring Sam....
SAM: the way I see it...the situation is....we've got something in common. (and then)....somebody in common.....(and then)...You following so far?
DAVID (soberly): Oh yeah...
SAM: Kind of a shame it's come down to this. I like you, David. You're hard not to like. But the fact remains...we've got a problem.
ON DAVID
...and he doesn't say a word.....just listens....
ON SAM
...choosing his words carefully...
SAM: She's real confused. Which is funny...cause I don't think there's anything to be confused about. I mean...look at you. You're a mess, Pal. Look at the way you live. Look at this place. Don't get me wrong...it's kind of endearing. And I know YOU like it. But i happen to think Maddie deserves better.
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as David smiles a small smile...
DAVID: You do, huh?
SAM: Yeah, sure I do. (and then) I've known her for a long time, Dave. I know what she likes....I know what she needs. And you're not even close.
DAVID: Then we don't have any problem...do we?
SAM: Well, it's like I said before. The lady's confused. Which is unfortunate...because last night I made her a very serious proposition. One that under normal circumstances I think she would have jumped at. I guess what I am trying to say is...if you really care don't care about her....she oughta hear that. And if you really do...well...like I said before....I think it's pretty obvious who and what's best for her. (and then) And if it isn't...it will be.
DAVID: You got it all figured out, huh?
ON SAM
...a small SHRUG...and he TURNS...and starts for the door...
ON DAVID
...just lying there...thinking about all of this...
ON SAM
...stopping just short of the door...TURNING and looking back at him...
SAM: Dave...It's real simple. You're not going to win. You can't win. (and then) So why don't you do everybody a favor and just back the hell off.
ON DAVID
...watching him...
ON SAM
...no words...he just TURNS...and is gone....
Ok......a bit more script reference material to come...and then questions......

Take two.......this is a part of the script that is omitted from the aired version. It occurs in the bar, right after Agnes and Maddie order their drinks....
MADDIE: So.
DIPESTO: So?
MADDIE: I don't know.
DIPESTO: Oh.
MADDIE: Not only do I not know, I don't even know WHY I don't know...(and then)...you know?
DIPESTO: I think so.
...the bartender returns and puts their drinks down in front of them...Maddie barely notices...Dipesto picks hers up and DOWNS it in record time...SLAMS the glass back down on the bar...Maddie is too absorbed in her problems to notice...
MADDIE: I mean, Sam is the greatest guy I have ever known....he's warm, he's compassionate, he's sensitive...
DIPESTO (starting to lose hope): He is?
MADDIE: he's intelligent, he's easy to be with, he's funny....
DIPESTO (still sinking): All that too?
MADDIE: I have complete trust in him...I know he'll always be there when I need him...and he always knows what I need...(and then)...he makes me feel safe.
DIPESTO (very little hope left): That all sounds great.
MADDIE: It is great. HE'S great. I'd be a fool not to marry him.
DIPESTO: (crestfallen) Oh. (and then; to the unseen bartender; LIFTING her empty glass; cranky) Hey, people are thirsty down here!
MADDIE (lost in her own thoughts): I don't know...maybe marriage is easier when you're younger...when you don't realize how drastically your whole life can change...
...the bartender puts a new drink in front of Dipesto...
DIPESTO: You mean like how one day a certain person makes your skin crawl, and the next thing you know, you can't stop thinking about them, all in a small space of time like, say, two and a half years?
MADDIE (mildly annoyed): That's not what I mean.
DIPESTO: Oh.
...she PICKS up her drink and THROWS IT BACK...even faster than the last one...
MADDIE: What I mean is, how do you know that the way you feel about someone is the way you SHOULD feel about someone you promise to love for the rest of your life?
DIPESTO: And what if the way you feel about someone else isn't the way you SHOULD feel about someone elseif you're thinking about spending the rest of your life with the first someone?
...Maddie gives her a look....
DIPESTO: Did I say the wrong thing again? I said the wrong thing again...(and then; LIFTING her glass) Bartender, what is this, the self serve aisle?
The scene continues with Agnes telling about discussing her problems with David, as aired.
ok...the questions cometh.....I promise...

OK...let's start......
1. At the beginning of the episode, what do you think is the state of mind of each of the characters......Maddie....David....Sam?
2. Does Sam believe Maddie's story about where she was the night before?
3. I posted the original script scene at David's apartment. After reading this, there are a few questions:
~ Is Bruce's performance more effective the way it was aired or would you prefer it the way it was written?
~Does the scene as written change or support your original opinion about Sam?
~How does this written scene affect your understanding of David's reaction to Maddie the next morning?
more coming......

4. Why can't David express his feelings to Maddie during their confrontation?
5. Agnes and Bert...aren't they the cutest ever? Why is their relationship so uncomplicated?
6. Give us your interpretation of "The barrage in the garage".
7. Regarding the deleted parts of the bar scene...do they make Maddie's dilemma any more understandable?
8. I can't really dissect the final scenes...let's just talk about them.
9. Bruce has remarked in an interview that during the final bed scene, David says, "I love you, Maddie." Big question.......can you see it? Does it make a difference to you?
10. What's your reaction every time you hear "Be My Baby"? (Do not include the current horrid use in Cialis commericals!!!)
Ok.......please add more if you've got 'em.......

Absolutely, totally confused....all three.
Maddie has two "terrific" guys to choose between. David thinks he is in the lead in the Maddie sweepstakes, but knowing her...well you can never really know her.
Sam can't figure out in his calculating, college educated mind how David is still even in the running.
Sorry Sam, but that is why they play the game....on any given Sunday.

6. Give us your interpretation of "The barrage in the garage".
Dave telegraphed his punch. I'm surprised that Sam even let it connect! Sam obviously had more formal training than the streets of Philly.
This may sound odd, but I think Dave was swinging out of frustration at Maddie as well as with Sam. Sam though was totally focused on his rival for the heart of the Blue Moon Shampoo girl, and won the round, if not the bout.

1. At the beginning of the episode, what do you think is the state of mind of each of the characters......Maddie....David....Sam?
I think that the kiss on the trunk sealed the deal for both David and Maddie. Maddie's visit to his apartment in the middle of the night and her admissions to David really told him all he needed to know. That's why he was so shocked by Sam's news about the proposal. I also think that the kiss told Maddie how David felt about her and she knew in her heart that she could not marry Sam.
Sam knew that he was competing with David, but it was only when he woke up that morning to find Maddie gone, that he truly realized how Maddie felt about David. His desperation caused him to charge over to David's apartment to try to change the course of events.

2. Does Sam believe Maddie's story about where she was the night before?
I think Sam believes that she was working on the Johnson case, but knows that Maddie isn't telling him the whole truth. At this point, Sam doesn't want to start an argument and risk pushing Maddie away. So, he decides to pretend to buy her story and tries to prove what a great guy he is...breakfast, bed tuck, etc. He was playing the kind, understanding - "how can you not pick me?" guy.
