Evening, everyone. Before we get into some questions, I would like to say how absolutely wonderful this episode is. Each scene is so well-crafted and Cybill and Bruce do an awesome job in getting us to feel their pain and frustration. Then, amidst all the drama, we have the Dating Game and a crazy chase scene that ends up in a bowling alley. By the way, I just love the twinkle in their eyes after they've appehended the bad guys. So, let's get on with it. 1. In the opening scene, Sam asks Maddie if she is okay. Why? 2. In both Blonde on Blonde and Sam and Dave, David plans to tell Maddie about his feelings for her, but is thwarted by Sam. In this episode, David finally has the opportunity to talk to Maddie - in the office, in the car and in his apartment - yet he doesn't. Why not? 3. In Sam and Dave, Maddie puts her personal life before her professional responsibility by choosing dinner with Sam over the McLafferty case. The next day, she does the exact opposite. What has changed? 4. What is happening in the drive and talk scene when they are on the way to see Elaine Johnson? What game are they playing? 5. Elaine Johnson comments that women make love with their hearts. David glances at Maddie. What is he thinking? 6. Why do you think Sam chooses this particular moment to propose? Do you think it was planned or was it a spur of the moment question? 7. Discuss the significance of the trunk scene (sigh). Is it a turning point in their relationship? Does it tell David what he wants to know? 8. In the words of an oldie but goodie, "if you want to know if he loves you so, it's in his kiss". What does Maddie learn from David's kiss? 9. In this episode, we get to see the situation from Maddie's point of view. How do you feel after experiencing Maddie's inner struggle? 10. Maddie rushes over to David's apartment in the middle of the night. Seems pretty spontaneous, unless she weighed the pros and cons before rushing over. Is this a case of role reversal? Fun Comments: Don't you love Bert with a Yuban buzz? Has anyone ever wondered why Alan and Elaine follow David and Maddie and subject themselves to a barrage of dairy? Why don't they go the other way when David and Maddie get in front of them? OK, kids. Have fun!

I'm thinking that he may have had some inkling that there were other things on Maddie's mind during the previous night's boot knocking. He was trying to determine if it was something he had to address, or something that would blow over with time.
I know you ladies think that us of the masculine gender can't tell when a woman isn't really "into it". That is far from the truth. In reality, we can surely tell....we just don't care.

Dear old Dave is indeed a complex character. Even jaded old me would have, by now, spilled the beans. I am not certain if it is his desire to have Maddie say those three words first, or if he really doesn't think he NEEDS to say it...that his words and actions over the past years have proven his love more than any soliloquy can. Maybe I can understand the office...even the car...but when Blondie comes to his hooch dressed in only her finest snooze garments to get the real scoop...well, dude, that was the time to let it out.

In the first instance, Maddie ran away from David to play with Sam. In the second, she ran away from Sam to play with David. This shuttle diplomacy reminds me of Symphony and the Fun vs Fine evenings. Even though the dinner didn't turn out to be a "fine time had by all" that was mentioned, Maddie knew what lied ahead if she went the spaceman route. She needed one more madcap adventure with Dave to finally gather all her data for the eventual decision to come.

I have always thought that he appears to act oblivious to Maddie's questioning in the office because he feels he has already lost her. So, to save face, he invents Monique, makes up an excuse for coming to the restaurant (Bert) and then acts as if nothing else was going on at all. This would have been totally different had Maddie been told by Sam that he was at her door the night before. The thing is though, Maddie knows better because she knows him well enough to know that when David drinks it's usually for a reason other than just to drink...
In the car scenes pretty much the same thing except he actually feels as if he has been betrayed by Maddie, so his emotions are everywhere concerning her.
In his apt., he is so shocked she is there...at 4am...hmmm, did they do that on purpose?...and then she starts hammering him 90mph with questions and what does David usually do in that situation? Clams up or walks away. Once they are sitting on the trunk I think he sees that Maddie is coming to her own realization of what Sam means to her and really, THAT is what he wants her to do; to make her own decision about him and her.

6. Why do you think Sam chooses this particular moment to propose? Do you think it was planned or was it a spur of the moment question?
I think Sam had obviously planned to hook up with Maddie again with the express purpose of rekindling their long term romance. I don't think he expected such fierce resistance, not from Dave, but from Maddie's heart. He felt that he had to make a significant raise in the ante..and I think proposing matrimony pretty much counts as an "all in" bet, don't you agree? In his cold calculating mind he knew that he had to make a spectacular bid, and gave it the old college try.

I think she is starting to feel confined and suffocated by Mr. Perfect. She looks across the office, the car, etc., and sees David who lives life one day at a time with whatever each day brings. She realizes how the two very different men could impact her life IF she were to choose either one.

5. Elaine Johnson comments that women make love with their hearts. David glances at Maddie. What is he thinking?
Comparing a woman who is obviously of, well, questionable moral fiber saying that although she has put quite a number notches in her lipstick case, she still does it with her ticker....to the ice queen with a substantially lower number of home runs who (David thinks) was fully ready to raise the score with an anonymous stranger.
Strange bedfellows indeed.

5. Elaine Johnson comments that women make love with their hearts. David glances at Maddie. What is he thinking? Possibly that he knows her heart was left out of whatever she did the night before...he can tell she is still not happy and that Sam doesn't seem to **"butter her biscuit". Only he also knows that they...all 3 of them...aren't out of the woods. Which brings to mind the times they have had discussions before this and after about following one's heart when making certain decisions. **from the insightful gray
